1070 or 980ti?

For 429.00$ Microcenter has the EVGA FTW ACX cooling 1070. Part number is 08G-P4-6276-KR.

Picked up one yesterday left my wife and now live in a cardboard box with a power outlet and my desktop. All in can't complain with this AWESSOME 1070! ;)

I think if you were to buy a 980 Ti today over the 1070, you would regret that purchase a couple months down the road, let alone 6 months down the road. The 1070 is a little more future proof, trust me. The 980Ti is cheaper for a reason.... Think about that for a minute, you get what you pay for.

Would take the 150w 1070 over the 250w 980Ti all day long, +2GB, and you get the latest hardware and driver support.

everyone makes a big deal out of power consumption i dont even look at stuff like that im always using 1000 watt psu or more.Im sure the 980 ti will have plenty of driver support left again 350 for a 980 ti is still the better deal

It's not the power consumption per se, but all the heat in my upstairs PC room, at least during the warms months.

Also have to think about async compute even if the 1070 doesnt have much everything I have read is that the maxwell cards have 0 async compute.

I actually am still struggling with this because I dont care about async compute but the longterm nature of the card would be like "in 5 years for a htpc would this be good?"

As a 980Ti owner, I'd say get the 1070. Roughly the same performance in DX11, better performance in DX12/Vulkan API's, far better for VR, undoubtedly better driver support, especially moving forward and then of course there's the power consumption.

Sorry but there are too many things in your post that need addressing...

1070 is currently worse than the 980ti for VR without overclocking, it will be much slower once both are clocked.
It is slightly slower for normal games too when both are overclocked.
DX12 performance / support is spotty and I havent found a need for it yet, DX11 works well.
I'm not seeing better driver support yet either.
Currently it has the advantage of lower power consumption.

I would go for the GTX 1070 unless you can score a relatively cheap 980 Ti.

If you're going to address them, at least make it accurate.

1) Pascal > Maxwell for VR. Fact
2) I said "roughly the same performance in DX11" you essentially said the same and added "when overclocked"
3) Just because you haven't found the "need" for it doesn't mean anything. 1070 > 980Ti in this category, just as I said
4) Glad you agree there

You haven't addressed a thing lol

Are the biggest 980 Ti air coolers so heavy they actually stress the PCI-E slot on a vertical motherboard? They would be fine on a test bed/horizontal mini-ITX build.

A month or 2 ago I bought a used MSI 980 ti golden ed. for $370. The 1070s I wanted were around 80-100 bucks more and the benefits, as many have outlined earlier in this thread, were not important to me. I'm happy with my choice and might upgrade to a 1080ti if it comes out, if it doesn't then I'll just wait until the 11XX series is released.

as a 980ti owner, if the price is close, withn $70, go for the 1070. performance will only get better with updates, it has newer features set and is far more efficient.

if 980ti is in $330 shipped then 980ti, the 1070 is about same performance as 980ti in some games at most 10% increase in performance in some other games, 1070 will stay in 399+ for some time before cost drop. for $330 980ti still has the best performance vs cost ratio.

Yeah, but 6 months from now you're not going to care about the $70, but you may care that you went with the older tech card.

not much gonna change after 6 months, the price of 1070 will hit $399, the 980ti will be either lower or all sold out. I purchase many GPU over the years, previous gen and current gen, there wont be huge difference in performance after driver update. The OP should look at the best deal Right now, if he can get used 980ti below $290 or new in $330 shipped, that's better then spend $430 shipped on 1070 right now. I purchase the 1070 ref for 420+ and then a Evga 980ti FTW for $335 shipped, test out on my games, sold the 1070 at original price. But ill be waiting the 1080ti thought :)

If you're going to buy a new card in less than a year, then it doesn't really matter, buy a 980Ti or a 1070. If you're going to keep it for a long time though, you'd be far better off buying the newer card.

there is only 1 gen difference, and performance is about same. both will devalued as new gen came out, so looking for the best deal on either one is better. $330 for 980ti or $399 1070, but most 1070 are like 430+ right now.

if you are not VRing or have power requirements 980 TI is a way better buy for the money!

They can easy hit 1450-1500 too. Just don't buy ref. I am shocked at the fire sale on 980TIs and that any are still around lol

the 980Ti is not the better value...with the 1070 you get 2GB more VRAM plus better power efficiency...for $50 more the 1070 seems like the better value and performer...games like Deus Ex: Mankind Divided are already maxing out the 1080...imagine what Battlefield 1 will do

the extra VRAM is only good for certain res and certain game(have 32GB on my system doesn't mean it will use all), there are tons benchmark that show 980ti is same as 1070, sometime better or worst for certain game. if OP can get a new 980ti for $330 ish, then its good deal. 980ti will max out 1080p. if the gap is $80 or more no point to get 1070. get the best deal available, unless you dead set on 1070.

if I can get $330 980ti vs $410 1070 ill choose the former, cause 1070 doesn't worth 80 more than 980ti. Both will be excellent in 1080p, and good/decent for 1440p.

I test both before I sold my 1070, cause in 1080p both show similar result on my monitor for various game.

I have a 1070 and ordered 980ti evga for my friend that was 359 after MIR from newegg. Runs stable at 1443-1460 beats my 1070 by about 10-15% or so OC to OC. My 1070 running at 2.0-2.1 is slower than 980ti running at 1440-1460.

I love my 1070. 60fps @ 4k on medium/high settings. I cant beat that( im not paying 6/700 for a 1080).

this was my point. 980TI is by far a better value with OC with this crazy fire sale.

I find it funny that people bring up new tech vs older tech who really cares?for most of us it is about raw performance and really most of us will never get into virtual reality so if that is your gig go for the 1070.Im pretty sure side by side you will not notice the difference from one to the other. As far as 980 ti cooling mine never goes above 74 degrees and im plenty good with that and that is a highley overclocked 980 ti at that

The 980 Ti and the 1070 are trading blows in the [H] VR reviews (5 games so far). If you have the extra cash id go for the 1070 but if power draw and a tiny advantage in DX 12 doesn't matter to you a 980 Ti on sale that can overclock well is still a very good card.

Id go 1070 unless the prices are still jacked up and you can find the 980TI for cheaper.
