Electronic Arts announced today that the Battlefield 1 open beta kicks off on August 31st. Head on over to Blue's News for the lowdown on the sign-up deadline, the game's three elite classes, and more. The Battlefield 1 Official Gamescom trailer also dropped today.

Battlefield Insider members get early access, and if you sign up by August 21, you can join them as some of the first people in the world to play the Battlefield 1 Open Beta. If you've already signed up, make sure you go to the Battlefield Insider Page and select your platform preference, otherwise you won’t get a code to play early.

Game's looking pretty damn fun in the latest trailer.......

Signed-up for this. In-game trailer did it for me. Looks like total madness. :D

Don't play this for historical accuracy. The top speed of the Mark IV tank was 4 mph. The ones in the clip move like an M1 Abrams tank.

Signed up but if this game is anything like Battlefield 3 or 4 I will not be buying. My game play style just didn't mix well with those games (I never played the release version of BF4, just the demo). I hope there are mostly bolt action and semi auto rifles (Give me a M1903 Springfield or give me death).

I think there's 1 semi auto rifle, but I think it's going to be filled with run n gun SMG's. Bolt actions usually don't do all that well in an FPS, unless it's a one shot kill in the upper body/head.

Should be a hardcore mode where it is a one shot.

I used to love DMRs (semiauto rifles) in BF4 in hardcore. IIRC it was two shots to the chest or one to the head.

If you've never played BF4 in hardcore... you've never played BF4. It's a different game. I hated normal mode and almost missed out.

I wish users could still run their own servers. Those days are in the past now I guess

If you're playing COD or Battlefield for it's historical accuracy, you're doing it wrong. :)

Looks fun and nice but not really going to be hyped up over a trailer. Will keep a close watch on this one though.

The open beta for Hardline is what unsold me. Usually I buy anything dice. Glad they have open betas.

Signed up, I love WW1 history and look forward to seeing some of it in over the top action.

Originally wasn't excited for a WW1 theme... after seeing the videos though, I think it's going to rock. I have a metric ass ton of hours in BF4 (almost 800) and it's fun, just getting old, glad to see something new and different on the horizon.

VIdeogames =/= real life. A big budget AAA has to be entertaining and broadly appealing above all else. Gameplay is king.

Everything I've heard is there will be servers just like every other game in the series. SW Battlefront isn't a BF game so don't lump it in.

As far as running your own servers, that's always been possible. Unfortunately it's been a while since you could run them on your own hardware. Now, you have to rent them but you do have plenty of control over them.

2/4 classes have autos... Though medic has semi auto.

The maps are going to make or break this game from what I can tell. I was not really impressed with the Alpha Map + infantry balance. There were tanks everywhere, all the time. Too many, combined with what I can only assume was insta spawn and lack of umpfh of the engineer weapons and it was a literal explosion fest. The village was like urban area so the shotgun (or uber fast sub) became the go to weapons.

Throw in the usual 2-3 windmill sniper honeypot nest.. lead to medics being not nearly as effective since they are pretty much chopped liver to everything else.

I found the alpha to be paced very oddly. It is a very fast paced game mainly due to spawning on vehicles but map size and snipers play a big part as well. Yet the mechanics I found to be very slow... reloads, weapon switching etc. To me this led to alot of oh crap pop around corner moments that ultimately came down to who surprised who first more than anything else.

I also saw the same netcode issues previous versions have had... the alpha servers were 60hz but I still had lots of death around corners and other typical no hit marker lag/wonkyness BF players are well accustomed to.

Confused here. IS this an actual open beta on August 31, or only for those who are insiders?

Ditto, that was one of the worst AAA beta's I've ever played. I am indeed glad they held one though, so I didn't waste my money.

Signed up for this, been pretty excited since word dropped it was WWI, when men were men!! If it runs as well as BF and looks 75% as good when being 150% larger mapwise, totally sold.

Gameplay is king, but they can do it tastefully. What they did was copy/paste BF3/4 mechanics into WWI. Too cautious to change the gameplay to suit the time period in any meaningful way. The Alpha, while still an Alpha, was as entertaining as watching paint dry. The lack of effort shows.

Back on horseback, with bolt action rifles, eh?

Continue going backward and next up will be Battlefield 1863 : Gettysburg

Sadly they are not going at all for weapon accuracy.

Bolt action (non scoped) rifles are not the default/primary weapon for ANY class. Bolt actions (scoped) are for the sniper class only, they have said you can remove the scope (most people however won't) so you'll see bolt actions the LEAST amount of any weapon in the game, which is absurd.

Semi-autos you'll see more of (which is a bit strange, since they were a bit more rare until the tail end of the war with mainly the French RSC-M1917's (1918 is when they were put into use). The Winchester model 1907 saw a little use in thie French army (befor the RSC) and was used early on for an aircraft gun by a few others. The Germans had some Mondragons as well.

The Medic class in the game you might like, cause they use semi-auto rifles as their main weapons. Strangely they have ones like the Cei Rigotti (which never saw any use in the war) but they don't have the RSC-m1917's (They don't even have the French or Russia in the game, at launch at least, probably dlc) and then they have the Mondragon and Winchester.

I think there's 1 semi auto rifle, but I think it's going to be filled with run n gun SMG's. Bolt actions usually don't do all that well in an FPS, unless it's a one shot kill in the upper body/head.

There's 3 (that we know of so far from alpha)with the main semi-auto rifle used of the war not in so far (the RSC m1917).

So far classes are:
Assault - SMG's
Support - LMG's
Medic - semi auto's
Recon - scoped bolt actions

It would have been nice if they paced the gameplay around the equipment. Bolt actions would have changed the pace up a bit. Most of the semis autos in the game never entered full scale production, with the few that did arrived too late for the war. The ones that did were terrible. But I suppose changing the pace would have been too risky...

It has to have that adhd spamfest aspect to it. I do hope for a more hardcore mode. Best deal would be allowing for MODS ffs. Never going to happen though. Hope squad gets better.
