Why I Don't Have The Stomach For 'Battlefield 1'

Seeing as they did World War 2 and Vietnam already, I can't see why people are complaining about World War 1. Not only that, but there are a tonne of other games set during actual wars and we all know that Battlefield will be about as accurate as the previous ones were (not at all).

I feel like some people want to be offended so badly that they just search for anything that might conceivably offend someone and claim it bothers them.

I must admit I felt a little conflicted about the trailer treatment for the game, WW1 and the sacrifices there of is of a particular significance in Australia.

This is why I couldnt play Gta san andreas, growing up in San Fierro er Francisco all the senseless crime... wait I'm not a massive pussy, I can play this shit just fine. I mean its not like the guy was actuall IN WW1 sonit brings back memoriez

How is World War I more offensive than World War II? Every military shooter seems to have done World War II at least once, and no one complains about those games... even though they have Nazis in them. Shouldn't people get offended by a game with a Nazi in it, if they're going to get offended by anything? These people don't even make sense anymore.

Damn, most active military personnel don't care about playing modern shooter set in some Middle Eastern country... and this guy cares about the real people who died in a war from 100 years ago? Crazy person.

Wait more offensive than current wars being made into video games? Seriously put tumblr down.

Sounds like a guy needing some massengil and midol. I can't believe I wasted my time reading his BS.

I've seen so many of these manufactured controversy pieces that I'm pretty sure its just marketing. It's always the same, post some retarded-but-kinda-believable opinion and let the internet fap about how dumb the author is for knocking the game. I remember similar stories for various Call of Duty titles, and more recently there was the guy who couldn't play Bioshock Infinite because the baptism scene somehow went against his Christian beliefs...

WWI or science fiction, they are all just games and have never affected me in the way he describes.

I think games like this are important if kept historically accurate. Give todays generation a hands on feel for what went down, just might give them an appreciation for all the luxuries we have today. I would love to see games like this incorporate a real heros video snippets to show some of the real graphic stuff that is on record, our kids need to know the true sacrifice given.

Damn and I was just about to play MOH AA and PA. I just can't stand it anymore!!!

Everything since BF Vietnam has just been graphics and cheesey gimmicks that do not belong in it.

Fair point... I have played a couple of the Battlefields, but they all feel like the same game to me. I have trouble playing new first person shooters.

My first thought when I saw the headline was "Is this guy European?" WW1 left a deep scar on the European mindset and culture, far more than WW2 did. That is hard for us USA people to comprehend, as WW2 by the numbers was more destructive, and the USA was much more involved in that conflict, but it is real.

But when I got to the end of the article, I find that he is just a San Francisco media writer, so just another person spouting his opinion with no real basis for it other than "I didn't like it."

Why is the [H] posting this whiny sniveling BS from someone who was in no way effected? Even if they were, so what? Its a GAME.

Are there not memorials specifically for the remembrance of said activities? It's good to remember.

Well, I don't have the stomach to play Super Mario because it reminds me of all the paraplegics that can't jump. It's just awfully in-your-face about the jumping around.
Oh I thought it was going to be because of the rampant environmental devastation of mushrooms and turtles.

Fun fact, this article is based on a Fabricated Meme from Neogaf. No, seriously, an intentionally shitpost on Neogaf is the basis for this clickbait. It is the new take of the "I am an expert on japanese culture" posts and the like.

EDIT TO ADD:
Here is the original shitpost in all it's stinky glory, kinda sad that people didn't recognize that it was an intentional shitpost like so many others in the past.

NeoGAF

IMHO, I find it easier to play historically themed games (Red Orchestra, Verdun, etc.) than I do contemporary ones (Squad, Arma, Battlefield, etc.) because the passage of time - I feel - provides a comfortable distance, and makes it historically interesting.

I just can't bring myself to play many of the contemporary themed warfare games set in the Arab world with U.S. combatants. I guess it's just to raw and politically charged for me, especially with all the blatant racism that always winds up coming over the in-game voice chat from annoying kids.

To each their own, I guess.

I have no idea how this counts has SJW whining, other than just wanting to label anything they disagree with as SJW whining. The writer says he's not judging anyone who enjoys the game, it's just tough for him to swallow. If anything, I could see someone screaming he's a emo kid or something. Not sure about SJW whining.
It's narrative building. Through post-modernist and Wikipedian thinking they believe that if enough voices out there say something then it must be so. Since legal censorship of games won't work they're trying to make it accepted that your average person can't discern between virtual and physical reality. If the consensus is there then it is easier to push for censorship, or at least that is how the thinking goes.

World war 1 broke Western civilization

Disrespectful to the sacrifice by using an African mascot

No wonder comments are disabled on that site. This is ludicrously inane article.

Maybe times have changed some since the last major one?

Heh, reminds me of one of my favorite quotes "Those who forget the past, are doomed to repeat it." cant remember who said it off the top of my head

Still amazed at how a joke shitpost was converted into an article that ended up being a full on Poe's Law example.

I guess that i can take THAT as a commentary about the current climate of "political correctness",

This writer doesn't know the difference between a mid-evil mace and a freaking entrenching tool.

Long story short, I don't care what this tool thinks cause he doesn't know anything to begin with.

But the game sounds awesome.

To be fair most of us would like to forget about the cluster fuck that was the Vietnam War as well as the cluster fuck that was Battlefield: Vietnam.

I enjoyed BF Vietnam greatly and the soundtrack was terrific.

And now that you mention it, I have no desire to forget anything that I remember about the Vietnam War. Admittedly I was quite young having been born in 1960 so I don't actually remember much past vague memories of TV broadcast footage and discussions that came up at family get togethers when discussions turned to politics and such. But I was basicly alive for the entire show.

Still, one of many sad results of that war were the boat people, and one in particular grew up in Lubbock Texas and was my GF for a year, and she gave me a gift I treasure to this day so maybe we should remember that war and the troubles and the lessons and the good as well as the bad.

Where ever that girl is, please don't tell my wife about her. She knows anyway, but it does peek her jealousy all the same (y)

I wouldn't want to play a game about something that my family went through especially if I met a survivor from that time period. My dad enlisted just after WWII during the occupancy of Germany. 99% of his stories were about bars, hookers, Fraulein, getting drunk, falling asleep while on watch, etc. He also told me about the time his first lieutenant got drunk, started ranting, and ended up called them the "N" word. A mob of men beat him to death and gutted him on the spot. My dad recalls holding his best friends arm to keep him from using his rifle. This ended up saving his life in the long run as he surely would have went on trial for the murder.

Or the times that they used to toss white phosphorous grenades out of the back of the half-track or whatever they were riding in for fun, and one day hit a woman that they were passing. My dad personally went to her house, even though he didn't toss the grenade, and gave her money and food. She rode her bike everyday carrying wood, and waved at them in such a friendly manner, that they the guys took turns checking in on her. She was not really hurt, but they felt bad for what happened to her. Not going to get into the people that my dad knew that actually went off to fight in WWII and died there.

If you bring up the subject of Vietnam, I have an uncle that won't talk about it to this very day. He was so messed up that he brought back pictures of him wearing the ears of his victims, and kept souvenirs from the women over there. To this very day if asked about Vietnam, he swears that he worked in the field hospital and never shot a bullet.

So I can see where he's coming from. But I think that it's something that he should keep to himself. Everyone is not as sensitive to certain media as others. I wouldn't want to push my agenda onto others to make them feel bad about enjoying something that they are getting enjoyment from. By the same token I couldn't imagine playing a WWII game and there was a mission to liberate a concentration camp and have a real life victim of said camp in the room with me. I'm reading "Rena's Promise" and the author can barely get coherent stories from the Holocaust survivor that she is interviewing. If I were her grandson, I'd think about her at least once while playing the game.

In short these experiences mean different things to different people based on their life experiences. Personally I'm probably going to play the game and pretend I'm my dad asleep in a jeep and forgetting to pick up his company commander on time. ;)

I'm 56, my old man is over 80, his Father was in the Great War.

As far as I know, there are no living WW1 vets on this earth. The war ended over 100 years ago. Although I respect the sentiment, I think we can play the odds on that one.

My grandfather was a POW in WWII. He was in a concentration camp and when he refused the Nazi's attempts to give him better accommodations (blonde hair blue eyes) they sent him to the fields with the Jewish and other non Aryan. He did a number marches, but of note the infamous Auschwitz death march. He survived the war only to die of a heart attack very shortly after returning home.

The stories that have been passed down are horrific. Woman giving birth in the fields and being beaten nearly to death because they stopped working. People being shot execution style for not keeping pace.

My other grandfather was a pilot and was shot down. Survived and was not taken prisoner, but was in bad shape when the allies found him. I had the opportunity to talk to him about the war and the atrocities before he passed. He was a hard man yet cried in front of me and I was no more than 13.

I can make the choice to play a WWII based game or not. I do, and I find them fun. This writer (if you want to call him that) also has this choice. I saw the same argument that this writer made in these forums after the trailer was released by a member the community. I didn't post at the time, but c'mon people - if it offends you, just don't play it. I didn't hear the same outrage with Saving Private Ryan came out, just praise... "it's the most realistic and accurate WWII movie ever made"... as a man stumbles across Normandy beach looking for his arm...

Please believe me when I say I believe your story and I am not challenging the experiences of your Grandfather and your remembrances, but there are problems with how you are telling them that I would like to help you out with, or I may be missing something less obvious.

A POW is a prisoner of war, the Jews in the concentration camps were prisoners, but not POWs, unless, perhaps he was a Polish Soldier, captured and later identified as a Jew, and moved from a POW camp to a concentration camp?

I did find an article that would explain how this did happen.
Sachsenhausen

On May 3, 1940, for example, 1,200 Polish prisoners arrived in Sachsenhausen from the Pawiak prison in Warsaw. The prisoners included many juveniles, Catholic priests, army officers, professors, teachers, doctors, and minor government officials.

As for your comment about just not playing it if it bothers you ...... here here.

Well.... it works... if you keep repeating it enough, it becomes "common knowledge," facts or no facts.

I think this guy would explode if he played Condemned and had to beat someone to death with a metal locker door.

All wars are messy, shitty affairs. If you think otherwise, you've not been in them or known someone who was. My grandfather was a WW2 badass, and I can play WW2 games without worrying I'm dishonoring him in some way. He wouldn't give a shit and would call this "fake mumbo jumbo" - which it is.

See, the previous generations weren't pussies. They didn't worry about hurt feelings, they worried about getting shot.

You have a very solid outlook on this entire thing.

War is a shitty business and no one should try and make it anything else but the shitty business that it is, and that it's supposed to be.

Anyone trying to make it nice and clean so it's more enjoyable needs to have their nut examined.

He can start by watching that Star Trek episode where two worlds played a war game in which "losses" were virtual, but real people had to be killed/sacrificed in order to prevent the realities of a real war.

The Enterprise finally forced both sides to stop, and when faced with the prospects of a real war, they instead opted for peace.

I looked for the name of this episode but it escapes me.

What do you think WWI ended up being for the germans? It was their vietnam...

The germans could have won WW I on multiple occaisons... but due to the popular support of the people and the new recruits in particular, they were fed up, refused to fight, or just literally went AWOL... on other occaisons they didnt exploit multiple opportunities to continue an attack... but you can say that about most battles or wars...

The problem with this guys opinion is he probably has little to no understanding of WW I... and his reference to the rise of nazi germany was also callous to say the least... its like it has to be mentioned in everything anymore....but he doesnt mention anything PRIOR to WW I, only POST WW I... so what lead to WW I? What lead to the revolutionary war? Where was Genghis Kahn or Alexander the Great mentioned? It was a purely idiotic comment to make...while yes it was just an opinion, he screwed the pooch by mentioning WW 2 and not anything that happened prior to the whole topic of WW I...thus making his opinion about as useful as any 10 yr old X Box players....

While killing another person is not something to be taken lightly, its still an immense part of our species history... if multiple millions of people hadnt been killed in battle throughout the ages maybe more of us would be here, maybe many many less of certain ethnicities cultures and religions.... WAR and all its atrocities is a part of us, and it will remain a part of us for many generations...personally i always believed Military History should be taught to every student so they actually have an understanding of what war and warfare really is... if that were the case, maybe this guy would have done a better job of expressing his opinion...

Actually, saying that WW1 led to the Rise of Nazi Germany is only as true as saying that because Germany lost WW1 that WW2 had to follow. For the most part, France, England, and others brought WW2 on themselves by how they treated Germany after WW1. The victors kept their boots on the losers necks until they just wouldn't take it any longer. Those feelings of being oppressed had a lot to do with what allowed Hitler the opportunity to rise to power and lead an extremely united populace into a new war.

I own, but have never played or even installed, Battlefield Vietnam, but I have played the Vietnam expansion for Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and quite liked it. I wish the real Vietnam War had turned out like the Korean War, as South Korea is one of the most Westernized nations in Asia, certainly the most Christian nation in Asia, and is an economic powerhouse whose potential would be wasted had it been taken over by the Communist dictators up north.

That's so true. And we had every opportunity to have that be a reality today. The North was on its heels. The Paris Peace Accords were signed. The US was to continue financial support to the South to ensure that they would be capable of militarily maintaining the DMZ. Then Nixon resigned, Congress halted funds to the South Vietnamese and Saigon fell. Now all of Vietnam is living in squalor, instead of just half of it.

Yes, This man sees it for what it is.

So many people want to demonize our country and the things we do only seeing the failures or the negatives. They want to claim that all we do is cause harm and yet for most, they have Korean made phones in their hands or entertain themselves looking at all manner of Korean made displays, drive Korean made cars, etc. They do not realize that the Koreans are the most westernized culture in Asia and how hungry they have been to be just like us. Koreans have some super traditions and values and I hope they don't sacrifice them all to be like the west.

But while I am quick to heap praise, there are some "not quite there yet" issues with Koreans. They have remained in many ways most insular and so they can, understandably, be pretty racially prejudiced. I think it will be awhile before they leave their racial issues behind. Their progress wasn't just a perfect road to freedom either. They have some black marks on their score card the same as America and England do. But they are headed in the right direction and they are part of the solution and not the problem. And the counterpoint is so stark in contrast, all you have to do is look 50 miles north to see what the alternative would have been.

Besides, I pulled one hell of a great woman from that country who's been my wife and partner for over 30 years. Samsung and LG aren't the only good things that are made in Korea :D

Sometimes the planets align perfectly, you just have to be looking to see it.

We no longer have to guess, at least in America we can say there are no living WW1 veterans.

This guy served in WW2 and is 110 years old.

Last veteran of the trenches of WW 1 died in 2009, aged 111.
