Windows 10 forced update.

There's probably something to it; my neighbor was playing Europa when it auto restarted on him to "upgrade" yesterday. He was using Windows 8 and 8 has a nasty habit of restarting while you're using it unless auto restart is disabled via group policy. 7 should be a little safer but now that the 10 installation is a "recommended" update, who knows what will happen. I share the Redditers' fear of Monday as this is a very bad week for this to happen because most of us from the office will be out of state for 72 hour networking and server cutovers.

Based on their past history, it's plausible but I don't think KB3139929 has anything to do with it. I've installed that update and have seen no ads related to 10. It still seems like KB2952664, KB3035583, and KB3123862 are the main culprits here. Keep those off your machine, change WU settings to not install automatically, disable OS upgrade in GP, and install GWX Control Panel and enable monitoring mode. Should keep your system where it is.

Supposedly one of their IT guys did it on accident. In Oct 2015, if you look for the article, Microsoft apologized for forcing the upgrade. Exact quote was 'a mistake' they said.

Doing a search for the following keywords "oct 2015 a mistake microsoft forced" which aught to bring up a good many articles about it.

They said it was a mistake, then in February they changed the classification of it from "upgrade" to "recommended update". This allowed them to push it through windows update patches and also covered their ass because you made a conscious choice during Windows setup to allow Windows to update itself. These changes aren't a "whoopsies, it was one of our interns lawl", it was something that was thought out and planned. I mean look at the last push, they snuck it in an internet explorer update without clear documentation about it. Its shady and I think we are quickly getting to the point where Microsoft is just going to come out and say that Windows 10 upgrades are required.

Edit: And dont get me wrong, I like Windows 10. We dont run it at work due to direct compatibility issues with software we use. I dont run it at home because I need Windows Media Center for its DVR functionality with protected digital cable. Once SiliconDust finally releases their DVR software, I'll upgrade to 10 again.

I'm not sure what the fricken issue is. I have Windows 7 PC's that do not have the Windows 10 icon or update staged because I don't have install recommended updates checked. 1 single checkbox fixes this huge point of consternation for millions of Internet nerds.

So you don't update at all?

I have the same thing. It still came through. That's what this thread is about.

Did I say that?

Security updates are listed as "Important" and all of the others are listed as "recommended" or optional.

If you don't check the box, even with automatic updates enabled, you still get security updates and none of the optional/recommended stuff. You can manually install them later if you need/want them and just don't choose the ones that enable Windows 10. Right click and hide.

Your are either being dishonest or using an enterprise version.
The "icon" as you refer to it is not a recommended update it gets in even if you have recommended updates unchecked.
And if you have enterprise installed it won't try to install 10 even if you have recommended updates enabled (yet).

You didn't need to say that, you comment makes no sense due to this reason:

.... or you don't understand how Windows Updates work.

Guys I don't know what to tell you. Here is a Windows 7 Home Premium machine I just set up with only important (not optional) updates applied. No GWX in c:\Windows .. no GWX icon in the notification area, no hidden Windows BT folder cached on C:\ ... No tweaks to the OS or registry ...

If you have already applied the optional updates then unchecking the box now is not going to do anything for you. I explained earlier than unchecking the box means automatic updates will not deliver the optional/recommended updates and that you can choose to manually install the recommended updates that you want or need.

My installation of Windows 8.1 is setup the same way. I've never been nagged about "upgrading" to Windows 10.

So many "oops", "it was a mistake" in this Windows 10 era. Except notice how the "mistake" always falls in Microsoft's favor, never the customer's.

Meh, you could be right, I'm a little out of touch with Windows. I switched to Linux a few years back and this Windows machine just sits here gathering dust....

I can confirm that Microsoft is getting more and more pushy and forcing this update on people. I do the hardware and network field support for my geographical area, but we are a software company (Point Of Sale). Our software isn't yet working on Win10, but will be in about two weeks. The problem is up till now its been a nag, and customers select no, close it etc.

Now I have had at least a dozen reports on Win7 pro boxes either having Win10 one morning when they came in, or it is now saying "Install NOW or choose a time to install", with no option to simply not install.

The way around it is either a few registry edits, or declining the EULA when it comes up, or going into recovery and selecting the "Roll Back To Windows 7" option. I think it's wildly inappropriate to just make an OS upgrade a "important" update that installs itself, especially on the Pro version of Windows.

Sure they admit to collecting data but according to a video on their YouTube channel the only intent is to make the world safe.
It's all explained right here.

Well, I still have Windows installed too so that's not going to happen, sorry to disappoint.

Perhaps, but some do completely switch to Linux. I can't do that because of way too much money invested in my game library.

I couldn't give a stuff about my game library anymore, it's no longer enough of a reason to hand my rights over to large corporations in order to have what should only be the basic interface between the user and the machine....
