I have first dibs on some servers being retired with FCLGA1366 Xeon chips. What's a cheap motherboard with OC features that it can pair with to make some cheap gaming rigs.

There are no cheap 1366 motherboards. Its been like this for like 2 years since xeons became readily available to the public. Hell even the non-working boards sell for like $50 on ebay lol. This is because a lot of people had/have the same idea you do.

Pretty much any consumer retail board will be good for overclocking with although of course the higher end boards are better (don't buy an OEM board). I think some of the EVGA boards have issues with getting xeons to work (Specifically the "SLI" branded ones need some sort of board mod to get xeons to work)

Every once in a while you can get lucky and find a decent price on these boards (sub $100) but it takes a lot of luck. I haven't looked in a long time myself.

Ah crap. I was getting RAM, CPU and even the RAID controllers. I guess there is nothing as a free lunch.

Yup.. the prices are still incredibly high. Just not too long ago I sold an Asus x58 Rampage III GENE on Amazon for $250. I believe the prices are so high because the passmark score per dollar is an amazing value. For 5 year old processors, they're pretty darn close to the newest Intel chips, once overclocked.

As long as the motherboard supports the 6-core i7 extreme, it should also support the Xeon chips. There were some very early x58 boards that need a hardware mod, and some of the "newer" boards just need a BIOS flash. I currently run a Xeon x5670 @ 4GHz on my Asus Rampage III GENE. Works great. I picked up the chip for $90 on a server wholesale outlet on Ebay.

why not just use the server itself? I use a supermicro with dual six core 1366 xeons as my workstation

I've thought about doing this myself as I have a couple dual socket servers that I upgraded to dual X5675 CPUs. They both have 48GB of RAM as well.

Incredible performance. I'm running Intel X5650 @ 4Ghz/4.4Ghz on Asus Formula III x58. I paid a pretty penny for this board (new) a couple of years ago. This setup absolutely screams and I love the board. It's plain beautiful. I still have a spare MSI X58A-GD45 that I bought for $120 on Amazon brand new.

I wish @ just use the server but there are legal and practical reasons.

Legal:
If it's operational, we HAVE to use some authorised disposal company to get rid of it and since a bucket of fried chicken cost more than a barrel of oil, I have no money in the budget to do that so it will just sit in a rack doing nothing. And somehow, it cost more to sell the server than to destroy it (I swear financial people make the most fucked up rules to keep themselves employed).

Practical:
Servers = LOUD,
Some of them are Blades and so can't operate outside of the chassis
no OCing (stuck at 2.4GHz or whatever miserably low clock we bought)
Very Finicky Hardware Compatibility. Don't think for second you can slap any old HD, RAM, etc, into a server and expect it to work.Especially retail consumer grade hardware.
