Windows 10: Your thoughts so far?

Facebook hooks into your web browser and not the OS. Big difference.

That's not really true. Facebook is more than just a web site, it is a service and their are modern Facebook apps that can hook into tiles and sharing with other apps. There's also tons of Win32 desktop apps that hook into storage clouds and services.

For all the hype, and with all the split opinions you can hardly call Win 10 a raging success.
The heavy squeeze of big brother MS is so much more obvious in 10 than it was in 7.
I cloned a new SSD and upgrade my original SSD to 10, the only reason I'll keep it is because at some stage not too far down the track all support will stop for 7.
Doesn't mean that 10 is better than 7, but we'll all slowly convert and 7 will go the same route as XP and everything before.
I think it's a massive missed opportunity by MS, they should have come up with something much much better and for me it isn't and it looks crappy too.

Not so sure about that. It is still too early to call 10 a success or failure but GS StatCounter's daily OS desktop percentage share for Windows 10 broke 6% yesterday. If that number is indicative of the truth what would be much closer to raging success than the total failure, at least in terms of market share, that is considered to be the case of Windows 8.x.

After having used Windows 10 as my personal daily driver on all of my personal devices since GA, it has it's issues without question. But overall it's a VERY good OS that should improve pretty quickly if Microsoft is true to its word about updating and adding features. Not that these things haven't been an issue but a steady pace of new stuff, improved stability and compatibly and ironing out the big issues should only help.

The privacy concerns are certainly an issue but I think only a minority will be that turned off by them. You can't touch any piece of consumer tech that doesn't have many of the same issues and those issues to date haven't really tanked anything with a large following.

I love WIn10 as long as it remains free. When I have to start paying for it, complains start.

wow...the Windows 10 fan boys are cool...no opinion but theirs counts and "you obviously don't get it"...laughable

There must be millions like me, no reason to upgrade from win 7, suits me just fine.

I was indeed referring to the win 8 tile interface start/options menus.Sorry for the confusion. win 10 is more like 7 and that is a good thing, but it would be better if there was a tablet or PC menu style option you could chose to make it even more like 7 style for the pc..

There are certainly things that can be added to 10's Start Menu to make it better, like some type of folder system. However I think 10 does effectively address the biggest keyboard and mouse usability issues of 8. Many proclaimed 8 to hinder their desktop productivity and while some would say the same of 10 I doubt the is anywhere near the same as 8.

I hated the layout of the 3rd page of Windows 8-8.1, to me it was just a jumbled mess. Not only did you see programs, but help files, read-me files, HTML files, all uncondensed. The windows 10 start menu is far superior to that nightmare, agreed though it still could use some tweaking like being able to delete folders. I do like the way I can quickly just click the letter and I get the alphabet to choose what area I want to go to.

Not really. Facebook tracks all your online activities and you free willingly publish your life details on it and let them know your social connections, shopping interests etc.

People really do not understand what Facebook is.

Perhaps so, but I can easily block anything Facebook but that is not so easy with Win10 because it is hooked into the OS. That was my point...and I don't even use Facebook so they are no threat to my privacy.

Do you use Facebook? If you do, start your privacy concerns by disabling that as your first thing, then worry about Win10.

Facebook? No, nor do I use MySpace, nor any other time wasting "community" spyware.

So, I don't have to worry about it, nor 10.

There is no real reason to upgrade. No performance boost, no major update that is so critical as to make a valid point to upgrade, and the "use your customers as your product" is disturbing.

And yet, most here fluff it off like privacy, and security are of no count.

I use windows only for gaming so DX12 is interesting enough for the upgrade.

But that's me. Many others rely on Windows for daily tasks. I used to (shivers).

B00nie, I am starting to shiver, too. Were it not for having to use certain proprietary insurance software, I would probably be exiting out the Window...

Heads up on the "raging success" of 10... Many stores (Officemax/Depot, Best Buy, etc.) are offering FREE upgrades to 10 on any PC purchased... they get a kick back from Microsoft for this. So, they are pressuring the Average Joe into getting a Free upgrade cause, hey, its free! And considering the Average Joe thinks 8.1 stinks (even if they have not tried it out) they willingly, and blindly, say yes.

And there are reports the OS bypasses your host file for Microsoft servers... I suggest doing this on your firewall, not on your PC.

thanks for the heads up.

I'm not a paranoid person by any means, but I do value my privacy. In light of the massive number of data breaches in recent years, I'm not too comfortable with companies having information about me that they don't absolutely need. Hearing things like this (among other privacy concerns in 10) is making me seriously consider going back to Windows 7. Besides, I'm REALLY hating the new windows update feature. Power users should be given more robust control over that stuff.

I wonder what the Enterprise Edition will be like. I bet there will be little, to no, telemetry in that version...

Upgraded to Windows 10 Pro. Loving the new interface. Not really digging the way things are setup on the start menu. I went from Win7 to Win10 however so this is the learning curve I will go through. Windows Key + X has been my friend from the start.

Several issues:
My PC will not Sleep, Restart, or Shut Down when I click on either one of those buttons. It takes good five minutes for it to do so if it decides to do so. I disabled the "fast boot" or whatever option it is and still an issue.

Win10 won't activate, Microsoft helpdesks assures me it will in a couple days. Until then I can't change my theme/background.

My Logitech G930 headset would not show in the Logitech software, but it would in device manager. Through a painful process of trying older versions and uninstalling/reinstalling drivers/software I got it to work. However Windows does not see that the headset is active or a headset at all and so the Logitech software shuts it off every 10-15 minutes.

Do you have Win10 Pro? I read the below on some site so do this.

run GPEdit.msc
Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Update

Select 'Configure Automatic Updates', change to 'Enabled', and select option 2. It will notify before downloading and before installing any updates (or a different option if you prefer).

So far I like windows 10. My only real complaint is that with my Razer tartarus plugged in it never goes to screen saver to turn off the monitor. Other then that I've been enjoying it.

So far I really enjoy using windows 10, I have mostly good things to say about it..........BUT! The one nagging issue is the privacy issue, I here some people like it and are staying with 10, others wont touch it with a 10 foot pole. Its hard to say what is fact and what is fiction. I don't know if I should stay with 10 and ride the whirlwind, fall back to my 2009 clone drive of Windows 7, which was getting a bit flaky, or do a painful install of Windows 8 and then to 8.1 which will be pretty much a all day affair.

You can download an .iso or thumbdrive version of 8.1 now that will accept your Win8 key so you don't need to install Win8 and then update to 8.1.

Okay, well that's better news...now I feel I have a viable option if this Windows 10 doesn't work out. I was so dreading that whole long drawn out process of doing the whole 8-8.1 deal!! So now I will put that on my other hard drive with my flaky windows 7 install. Thanks for the info!!:)

Oh it's free? Cool. I just built a new PC. Where do I download my free copy?

Didn't think so. And if I'm going to shell out $200 for an OS it sure as shit shouldn't be packed to the gills with inescapable spyware baked into the OS as a core component that cannot be completely disabled.

That is true for non OEM machines. However, for computers like a Dell that came with Windows 8, you have to start with 8 and then go to 8.1. Unfortunately, that is just the way it is since it needs to pull the key from the bios.

Awesome!!!! Thanks for that. It should be an option in control panel, but still glad to see it's possible.

If you were one of the insiders you'd be now still using a free preview copy. Once that expires I may start complaining or may switch OS.

Until MS does away with forced driver updates NO F@##$$ way will I update. Plus too many bugs at this point. I don't recall Win 7 or 8 having as many problems at launch.....

I'm going to try this thing again I tired the preview a while back didn't like it.....
I'm just in for the Direct X12 which is pretty low no way in hell am I going to buy a copy of Windows 10

I guess add gadgets like CPU meter and CPU temp work so I'm going to see what happens.

It is slightly heavier than 8.1. The search feature (to search installed programs) is not that user friendly as it is arranged alphabetically unlike 8.1 which has amazing search feature.

Using the Update tool now which is the route I should of done 3 hours ago.
I hope my parents laptop turns out ok worried sick it will screw stuff up I would use the update tool on that but have no idea what the serial number is.

As simple as it seems, that is my largest gripe right now about Windows 10: Edge opens in a different window position every damned time I start it. I mean, IE would do that with Windows 95 through basically Windows Vista, I swear it did and I was always pissed about it when it happened. Then with Windows 7 I was delighted to discover I could set a size and position and voila, it stuck and was almost always dependable. I never used 8 or 8.1 because teh suk IMO and now with Windows 10 and this Edge thing...

Holy crap, Microsoft, can't you get that fixed once and for all? :D

+1. It seems like a bug because others are having no problems with the Edge window relocating. Some times my window will be top left, close the window, open it again and it will be bottom right lol.

I'm liking Windows 10 .. no issues. Everything that worked in 7 through 8.1 is still working fine. Finding settings is a learning curve again .. not as big as with going from 7 or older to Windows 8 though. I like the hybrid start menu too ..

..only issue I ran into was after going through the upgrade process.. making sure Windows 10 activated and then doing a clean install afterwards .. on 2 different machines, Windows was throwing up an error code and wouldn't activate after the clean install .. the one where Microsoft says to wait 24 to 48 hours and then try activating again .. they didn't activate.

I ended up just reinstalling Windows 7 Home Premium on one and Windows 8.1 Pro on the other .. doing the upgrade .. again making sure Windows 10 said it was activated and then doing the fresh install again and then it activated just fine 2nd time around .. don't know what the hiccup was on those and didn't feel like waiting around a few more days to see if Microsoft's activation servers would get straightened out or not.

I really like the OS now I I have The Home version installed on my folks PC and I got he Pro version my only gripe are all the dip switches from going on and off for settings.

Edge isn't bad I see they went from a white theme to a Grey theme for the top I don't like the all dark theme looks good but it's hard on my eyes.

I only upgraded to future proof for Direct X 12 games hell they might even release Halo 5 for Windows 10.
