Reason for adding a spam filter to the copier email address of a company

The executive director of one of my clients had asked me to update their spam filter for their local exchange server. After doing so, I added the copier to the list as well. Now, I admit I'm not totally dumb, but as this is my entry job to the IT world, I realized I did this without fully understanding why I did it. Now the director is asking me why their copier would need a spam filter.

How do I answer her without sounding like a dumbass and having my foot in my mouth?
 
Just accept it, tell her that the copier has been removed from the SPAM filter. Learn from this lesson and do better and be prepared next time.

Learn to slow down and not be trigger happy. Always ask yourself why you do what you do and be prepared to answer to what may happen or is expected after actions.

Well part of the response I gave her was this:

"The copier email address was added as a precaution because since it’s still a normal, legitimate email address it’s still susceptible to being spoofed. In other words, that account, like any other email account, could be hijacked by a virus and then send out faulty emails until it gets blacklisted for doing so."

Granted after re-reading what she said in her email, maybe she doesn't even understand what's going on. She asked "Why would the copier need an email address?" so maybe she doesn't realize that the copier itself has an email address that is used so when a user scans something to email, they receive an email from [email protected]. :confused:

If it has a mailbox it should have a spam filter.
 
What kind of spam filter? I know a lot of major hosted spam filters won't forward any mail if a mailbox for the email doesn't exist on the spam filter.

So for most of my clients there would be no reason to add a copier to the filter, as without the filter it won't receive any external maIl anyways.
 
Why does a copier have inbound mail at all? If it's just used for sending alerts, then it should block all inbound mail period... You don't want an unmonitored box filling up/wasting space regardless if that is spam or not.
