My point is i dont give a damn if its 400watts TDP if it beats the 980.
$19 a year in extra power means absolutly nothing to me.
TDP is irelevent, only performance
nope, $15 a year difference between the 980 and 290x for me.
i said $19 because my electricity is cheaper than opther parts of the US.
i game 2hrs a day x 7 days x 135 watt difference x 52 weeks /1000 watts per per kwhr x 0.15 per kwhr = $14.74
I am with this man. Also I hope everyone realizes the competitor GM200 will likely have a similar TDP. Maybe 250 instead of 300. I don't think comparing this card to the 980's TDP is fair...
Architecture makes no difference... all that matters to the consumer is how fast it is vs how much £££/power/heat/noise
Power efficiency is a premium feature. Like an added bonus.I do hope their new cards are more energy efficient.
I'm looking to upgrade my SLI setup to a single powerful card. I skipped the nvidia 900 series to wait for AMD's offering, I do hope their new cards are more energy efficient. I might be tempted to purchase a 290x seeing the price drop on newegg, but from what i've read those cards use a lot of power.

It's not something AMD can afford. So unless it happens by accident, they're not going to make it happen.
AMD will never compete on power unless they magically fall into a huge pile of money.
The 380x will definitely use more power than the 290x but also probably be at least 30% faster.
Thanks for responding, this is the PSU that i have now. I assume this isn't strong enough to power the 390x when it comes out but could it power a 290x. ( I don't overclock video cards only CPU)

If I recall, the Capstone series is made by Super Flower.
Anyway, 650W is enough to handle any single GPU configuration in existance.
Unless you're running 50 HDD's.
As long as the price and performance are good, power consumption can go out the window.
Although right now the 290 and 290X are complete failures compared to the 970 in pretty much every regard.
The 290X needs to be about $250 to be viable, they're still being sold for over $300. May as well just buy a 970 at that point.
Nvidia will have their chance to stomp the 380X later this year.
It doesn't really matter how old it is, the only thing that matters is today's price. How can you say this with a straight face? The 290 didn't fail at anything. The 290 was out for almost a year before the 970 existed. There are entirely too many people on this forum that let the name of the company blind them when it comes to comparisons.

Also, my 290 performs better than the 970 I bought then resold because I play on triple 1440 and the actual 4gb of memory is needed at that resolution.
The 290X and GTX 970 are the same price right now. There's no reason whatsoever to choose the 290X.
4Gb ram, slightly faster at 1440p, freesync... There's 3 reasons to buy a 290x instead of a 970.
mantle, trueaudio, VSR
theres 3 more.
I certainly hope AMD got the TDP down. If it's not running at least close to a 980 TDP wise (meaning under 200), I won't buy it. I might be pissed off at Nvidia, but the card is useless to me if I don't want to play a game in the summer because it'll make my room heat up even with the AC on. I hated gaming with my GTX480 in the summer because it had a TDP of 250w.
These new cards could still be 20nm. Probably not, though. So 20nm or 16nm GPU's aren't coming this year?

If the 290X was something like $150 right now, I'd be praising it as the best deal in GPU history... But that's not the case, and it's over-priced.

The 290 is in a much better spot, but it's still a solid $200 GPU and not a cent more.
Not really. The new series will have similar power/performance as Maxwell. It should be within about 10%.amd will not release a low TDP card until they make smaller nm's... If you want dem low TDP you need to wait for dem smaller NM's

You haven't looked at 290x prices recently have you?
GTX970 = +$340
R9 290x = ~$260 aMIR if you shop around plus Civ:BE.
Not really. The new series will have similar power/performance as Maxwell. It should be within about 10%.
Pretty much everything you have said in this thread is BS. Why are you making stuff up?
I wish those prices where like that here. I'm doing a new build for a mate and the GTX970 is $50 cheaper than a r9 290 (non-X). A shame as I would love to put one in.
Seems that the GTX 980 uses a lot more power than you think. Look at the last chart that shows the power consumption. It is a little better than the R9 290X.
