I think I'm going to do the HDPlex DC board you went with as well. I found a 19v 240w passive ac/dc brick i really like that should work well with it: http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Replacement-Alienware-M17x10-1847DSB-AM18X-6732BAA/dp/B006QE190E

Even with a GTX970 i doubt my system would use much more than around 200w at load.

It looks like you just mounted the HDPLex DC board with double sided tape. Are there mounting holes on it to put it on standoffs mounted to the case?

How long are the short cables that come with the HDPlex? I couldn't find the lengths listed for all the cables on the website.

The HDPLEX has four mounting holes, one in each corner. I have four holes drilled into the top case for mounting. The cables supplied by HDPLEX are more than long enough for any arrangement of parts in the MC600. A quick-dirty measurement says all the cables are around 350mm. For my parts, the 24-pin EATX mobo power cable and 6-pin GPU power cables are easily twice the length they need to be. If cloning my build, getting a shorter 6-pin GPU cables and mobo cables would be a plus.

I would go for the Dell 330W brick with the HDPLEX, it's capable of outputting a lot more!

I don't need more, and i like how this one has a slim form factor.

It won't work with the 970. You'll trip the overcurrent protection on the 240W and it will shut down every time you start up a game. The 330W works fine.

Did you try it, or are you just guessing?

The 970 draws about 150w, the CPU i'll be using 35w, the board, m.2 ssd, and fans won't use more than 20 watts. So i see around 200w total for max power draw. Why would a 240w brick not be enough exactly?

If you read the reviews for the GTX 970 you'll see that the card actually regularly spikes over the rated 145W, occasionally even over 300W. Although I'm sure that the 330W can handle that, the 240W probably won't be.

Over 300W spikes? What review contained that measurement?
 
Alright. I'll be interested in the results, the 240W might be more tough than rated.

No, I tested it. The brick was good for around 250w from the wall with prime95 but would shut down instantly shortly after starting a graphically intensive game. Usually it would make it through the menus, drawing ~150w, and then crash on the loading screen. I never saw what it spiked to on my cheap kill-o-watt though. Like I said, going to 330w fixed it.

and the system you tested it on, what TDP is the CPU? How many hard drives? How many fans? Any pumps or lighting powered off the PSU?
