You know a game is bad when Epic wants its logo removed from any of the marketing associated with the game.

“Epic Games isn’t involved in this project,” a statement from the company reads. “Unreal Engine 4 is available to the general public for use ‘for any lawful purpose,’ and we explicitly don’t exert any sort of creative control or censorship over projects. However, the video is using the trademarked Unreal Engine 4 logo without permission from Epic, and we’ve asked for the removal of our logo from all marketing associated with this product.”

Sounds like a fun game, better than most generic repeat crap out there nowadays. Reverse psychology worked. It's on my wishlist.

Never heard of it...

But wow.... it actually doesn't look half bad. But the gameplay is so little that it's hard to say it with concrete confidence.

But the dev is right, it's definitely against the normal trend. And this denouncement probably just got the name of the game out into the world. Expect backlash from the community.

Meh, same crap as games like Postal, they just went with the Metalocalypse-looking main character and dark brooding shit instead of zany psychopathic stuff. The game itself will probably suck anyway.

Looks fine to me, I fail to see how this is any different from Gears of War, God of War, The Darkness etc etc

Looks like a fun twin stick shooter

It looks like Postal but without the humor, so I think I am out.

I enjoy violent games, but this is a bit much for me. Like Shmee said, "postal without the humor".

That being said, even though I think the game is a little too much for me, they have the right to make it and peps have the right to play it if they want.

They didn't go far enough. They should have named it Rape instead.

What about hate-rape where you rape, vomit in disgust and then murder. Then repeat that at least 1000 times by a press of a button. Then kick a handicap - no wait that would be too much like humor.

I bet that if they make this game multiplayer there's going to be a language filter preventing you from saying bad words online lol. Hypocrisy 101.

Agreed.

And Steve, "bad" is the wrong word. "Violent", maybe?

Inb4 some kid shoots up another high school and this game gets blamed for it because it's in his Steam library.

And jesus fucking christ that's the most hardcore gameplay I've ever seen. Makes the shennanigans I did in GTA seem like a trip to the petting zoo.

The game is great, it lets normal healthy people do all the things they secretly think inside but are too scared to do.

I guess...

I see [H] has some new crop of millenials.

Welcome.

I was thinking the same.

That said, the game is irresponsible. Pretty sad when people are posting "this looks great!" Another example of the decline of Western Civilization. Don't get me wrong, I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the GTA series or even Postal (albeit many years ago), but this is a line we didn't need to cross.

yeah it's just the sort of meh-worthy "useless" game that brings scrutiny to the industry for nothing of value in return

meh

never heard of this game untill now, defiantly a buy for me. epic sold out the pc gamer anyway the hell with them.

+1
I thought the same thing, when I saw the vid.
First thing that popped into my head was the Postal series. Even the voice sounds a wee bit like the postal dudes voice.
Nothing new here... it seems like a re washed game. I'm sure it'll sell well with extremely disgruntled tweens , teen, and people a like. I'm bet it'll have extremely repetitive game play.
Well , least Postal had humor to lessen the dull kill kill mind numbing game play.

but this is a line we didn't need to cross.

There are no lines. Its a videogame. It's cheesy, stupid, angsty teen crap, but its their choice to make it. Postal had a virtually identical plot, this is just a different style of the same thing. They want the scandal anyways, that's obvious.

Way to stick it to the man by buying a game that licenses technology from the very company you're denouncing .

What is the challenge of running around killing things that don't fight back. This game makes no sense for a number of reasons. Seems like they made it just for shock value.

Honestly that just scared the hell out of me.

They are definitely right to distance themselves from it. There's a big difference from how this is themed vs. GTA or Postal.

This is Dark horror where you get to make people suffer, and then kill them. Can stuff like this be done in GTA5? Yes. But its totally different.

It's hard to even call it a "game". Who is entertained by the idea of placing oneself in the role of a psychopath who kills innocent people just because it's "fun!"? Psychopaths, of course. That's why it'll sell by the millions.

Direct quote from Eurogamer:
Jarosław Zieliński said:
"No, I don't think the content has gone too far. It's just shooting virtual characters and if anybody has a problem with distinguishing reality from a game, he should turn off his computer and go for a long walk. :) We do what you can find in so many titles, we just don't want [to] justify it. If someone doesn't like the game and feels disgusted with its content, he doesn't have to play it - plain and simple. It's definitely not game for everyone."
...
"In times where a lot of games are heading to be polite, colorful, politically correct and trying to be some kind of higher art, rather than just an entertainment, [we] wanted to create something against trends. Something different, something that could give the player a pure gaming pleasure. This is how the idea of Hatred - the team's first game, was born."

"Here comes our game, which takes no prisoners and makes no excuses," it added on its official site. "We say 'yes, it is a game about killing people' and the only reason of the antagonist doing that sick stuff is his deep-rooted hatred. Player has to ask himself what can push any human being to mass-murder. We provoke this question using new Unreal Engine 4, pushing its physics (or rather PhysX) systems to the limits and trying to make the visuals as good as possible."
Why do we have to inject some sort of political agenda into every video game nowadays? Why can't the video game just stand for what it is? If it is a shitty game, then it's a shitty game regardless of its content.

I imagine the game will go like this:
The initial levels are you killing innocent people on the streets
then cops show up and chase you
then you go on the run (probably a level running in the woods with hallucinations about your past)
then FBI starts going after you (helicopters, barricaded roads, etc)
then you commit a bigger "terrorist" attack (derail a train?)
then it ends in you taking out the president or something like that.

Escalation of the stereotype until its silly.

lilbabycat : there was a fine line the postal series didn't cross that this game does... Postal was cartoonish in design where this was made more real life. Also the part in the video where there's the cut seen of the main character grabbing the woman and blowing out the back of her head that is going a bit far , be it woman or man that was a bit hard to swallow.
I agree with Haste on the Game Dev crossing a fine line that in some ways doesn't need to be crossed.
Of course that's the parent in me speaking.
Now I'm not saying ban the game :p it's the US so it should be fine to make and sale, but I really hope there is a huge ratings lock on the game where they make it hard to start / install the game with out some kind of parental consent .

I wonder if they're going to distance themselves from the 5% royalty that they earn for sales of this game.

I believe the EULA for unreal engine requires mention of them in the game credits.

The freedom to go around and kill innocent people for fun is in SOOOOO many games. So, this is not totally different.

I get there is a fine line, but I think that has more to do with the graphic realism than anything else. With more cartoony games we actually use our imagination to fill in the gaps more, and in some ways that is more dangerous.

It's also interesting how people seem to be comfortable with the idea of killing people when there is a reason other than "because I just want to"... like making excuses to kill people shifts the responsibility away from yourself.

But if we make it with pixel art and from a top-down view and the character wears scary, dehumanizing masks, it's ok?

I'm not going to write it off yet. If it's very sandboxy then I imagine there will be lots of gameplay vids with some pretty crazy ways of people getting killed. I'm hoping GTA:V with the violence and gore cranked to 11, but realistically it's probably a game that exists solely to be a controversial item.

Yeah I had the same thought. The first few kills may be fun in the 'this is nuts' kinda way. But if thats all the game has it will become boring as hell in no time.

Looks more of a top-down shooter with graphic cut scenes to be honest. Sure the principles it's founded on are distasteful, but I wouldn't say it's much farther than whats already been out there for a decade or more.

Rape, beating hookers, killing kids, torture, and randomly killing people has been around for a long time, this game just seem to push the identity out there and not pretend it is something it isn't unlike previous games using the "art" moniker. Hell Hollywood is definitely not shy on this, just watch the movie "Rampage".

The decline of Western Civilization has been going on for decades now and it's quite sad the speed and ferocity in which it's happening. We've been heading back into Dark Ages 2.0 for quite awhile and we aren't that far off.

Reminds me of Nocturne. You kill people instead of Vampires, Ghouls, Werewolves. I'll keep an eye on this and see how the gamer reviews fair.

Which game lets you kill kids?
