Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth

I hope the mp will be better than the last civ.

In space, this sound fun. Let's see what the gameplay is going to look like in this one. CIV4 or CIV5?

Also the video don't show much, anyway.

Watch the PAX video, gives some pretty good gameplay details.

Got some HOT HOT details on this (ok not too many details).

A buddy of mine is on some kind of reviewing club, they review random stuff like new cereal, consumer products, etc etc. He hit the jackpot and was invited to review a build of Beyond Earth. Him and 9 other guys got to play for ~1.5hrs on top of the line machines, then give feedback. And he got paid for doing it.

Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to really grill him for details (plus he did sign an NDA), but the first thing I asked him is if it felt like a new game and not just a mod to Civ5. He said this was not the case at all and that it really felt like something new, and while using a similar engine, had new effects/graphical improvements.

That's all I got for now though, and really he's not the anal-retentive-attention-to-every-detail-pc-elitist type that I pretend to be, so I'm not sure how much more I'll be able to get out of him.

At this point I'm wondering what the performance requirements would be.

While likely not an issue for the desktop I'm hoping to have this has a go to game on the go to be paired with a tablet/convertible device which would be limited to Haswell ULVs currently.

Depends on if they use the Civ 5 engine or not. At a wild (and very probably inaccurate) guess i'd say that if the thing can run Civ 5 you should be good, at least in theory.

Got some more details from my buddy:

His gameplay experience was as follows:

Started as the first person on the planet. Your pod is your starter city of sorts. You start with no units. There is alien life around that can whoop you, so you can't just build a scout and have the whole planet/continent explored early. Also, he said unit building was very slow at beginning (not sure if balance or lack of certain resources or something?). New civilizations would land on the planet, which would start a mini-cutscene and show where they land. They would land at different times, not all together.

That's all I got out of him grilling him for a few minutes.

Looks pretty good. I just got into Civilization (Civ5) about a week ago. It was always a little daunting tring to play it due to the complexity but after forcing myself to spend an hour learning it, since I had it from a Steam sale anyway, now I can't put it down. Such a great game.

I will likely be buying this when it's released.

I got a tough choice for the Fall

Civ: Beyond Earth or play with Baby Girl (also due in the Fall). Decisions Decisions.

Well its tough, I'll have to vote for Baby Girl (and sneak in a turn or two in between feedings, naps, baths and diaper changes). :).

Maybe I can get her into it so I can have a CO-OP partner by the time CIV:BE2 comes out.

Her mother is going to KILL me :D

Well its def. a Civ 5 mod, but it looks worthwhile for sure. Cautiously optimistic. Will probably wait for first expansion or deep discount steam sale.

What I've found is it is best to wait until they offer up the game + all mods on steam for one low price. lol

If I don't, I feel the need to buy DLC but rarely have the time/willpower to go back and explore them...

What do you mean, Bloodhawke83? Sorry if you're being sarcastic and my meter is broken.

I'm guessing it's a Dune reference.

When they spoke of terrain they made a dune reference to how it looks like Arakkis. So Spice is only natural ;)

"A Great General has been born in the City of Arrakeen"
"Paul Atreides, "Muad'Dib""

Instead of Citadel, he can call up Sand worms ;)

must see vid from gamescom in germany this week

enjoy

Definitely Civ5 with a space skin. Didn't really have a chance to watch for details in the video, but hopefully they make some more gameplay changes to make it feel unique.

Agreed. I played a ton of civ5 when it first came out, then got the expansion but haven't gone back to play it since.

Between Star Citizen, Elite: Dangerous and Beyond Earth, I have to much now! :)

No way I'm gonna buy, at least not for full price. Looks a lot like a mod or expansion at most than a whole new Civ title. They had the chance of creating something much cooler and what i see is a full priced mod.

Damn, I wanted to wait on this one, but this stream is NOT making it easy! ;)

If they took the time to properly balance the mechanics of all the new content, then I'd say it's probably worth it. That being said, with a CIV game it never hurts to wait and buy the game + expansion later.

This will more than likely be the route I take.

I feel the same. I was going to preorder but I am not convinced there is enough value in it at the release price.

the problem I have with civ games, is that I've been playing essentially the same game for 23 years

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civilization_(video_game)

for the love of God, can somebody please create a NEW type of strategy game...civ games and all the @#$@# clones have gotten to me

23 years people and they're still milking the same cow!!!

In fairness it works.

Would you rather have Mass Effect or Dragon Age...which in terms of mechanics and gameplay all the games are completely different...and the publisher "reinvents" (breaks) GUI and mechanics that mostly just work?

Seems Earth and Beyond is to CIv 5 as Civ 4: Colonization was to Civ 4. Don't know if thats worth the full price of admission, even if at $35 (nuuvem) seems a bit much.

Except it isn't...

Earth and Beyond is to Civ 5 what Alpha Centauri was to Civ 2

I pre-ordered for $50 on Steam. I played 600 hours of Civ5. I've played all the Civ5 mods (Game of thrones mod is awesome.)

I read some in-depth gameplay impressions from a Civ5 addict that played to turn 250, 3 times. He said, you won't be able to just mass produce cities like in Civ 5 which is great. I can roll Deity in under 300 turns so I want mechanics changes over all else. I hope combat with the AIs is more competitive. I hope the diplomacy system doesn't have city states that are too easy to ally with. From what I've read, those issues are resolved.

Most importantly, hopefully the multiplayer is more fun, stable and reliable.

I can't wait.

I think this is one of the last games I'm looking forward to this year. Should be great.

If I play huge map with 20 civs on Civ 5, by late game my i7-820qm laptop CPU really struggles to make all the AI decisions, sometimes lags out for several minutes or crashes.

Is Beyond Earth going to be more demanding?

LoL... Yeah that would do it, poor laptop...

Good news is there will be Mantle support, so that should be freeing up tons of CPU resources on top of making the game animation incredibly smooth!

Hard to resist...

Accessible isn't a bad thing. That is something the new Xcom showed very well (particularly with its expansion pack) is that you could have a game that was fun, deep, had good strategy, and so on yet didn't need to be super complex. A lot of older games suffered from being really complex and needing tons of micro management. With good design you can get rid of that and have a better game for it.

Now we'll see how it goes, of course, there is always room to fuck things up. However that they are looking at making a more accessible game isn't a bad thing. I am very happy to see strategy games brought to more people.

The new xcom was a good example to me for the opposite reasons. To me it was so straight foward and boring and the mechanics were lacking.

I've had alpha centauri on my thumb drive for years, i'm hoping this game will be anywhere near that good.

Do we still benefit from Mantle support if we have an Intel CPU? Or how does that work exactly?
