When creating a character, do most people just make a white person?

OK, deep inside you want to be a white game character.

I don't know, I play the black guy in L4D and the white southern guy in L4D2. I'm neither black nor white. I think I want to be a goat next.

I prefer to use one of prebuilts with some minor tweeks to hair and eyes :)

Light brown female that looks like it could pass for any minority race just about. If no choice like that is available, then I just pick the default character. I know I'm not going to care about my character too much, so pointless to look through the worst of the worst character selection.

lol that is kind of interesting.

I don't think I really have any preference one way or another, honestly. The majority are probably white males, but it really depends on my mood when I sit down to create it. Sometimes I'll go for the doppleganger and others something completely different (other race/sex/etc).

In the Saints Row games I made a Gollum looking character in one. A Joker-ish kind of dude in another. Does that make me an in-the-closet Cosplayer?

Pale white female with red hair and green eyes. Hair length and body style depends on what I think is the hottest / most whorish.

I usually go the doppelganger route. I'm not white but I suppose its the same concept.

My first main WoW character was a Night Elf, second was a Troll.

I usually try to make a character that resembles an anime character. For the majority of anime characters drawn to date, they're usually light or fair skinned.

Heh, I do this too. My wife is an asian, polynesian, spanish mixture, and I approximate her when using female characters. If I use male, I tend to go for a gaunt/menacing sort of look. The one game that I did something completely different was Brink. My character looks like a slightly skinnier version of Morpheus. :D (with extra tattoos...)

Interesting topic. I dont know that I have a 'go to' type when I play games. About the only characteristic that I pay attention to is height/mass, generally going with tall-ish and slim. Otherwise I pick which ever one I think looks the coolest at the time or has the most striking characteristics.

I always go brunette female, white. Smaller target in many games, with smaller hitboxes, plus, if I have to regularly look at some character's backside, or redress them or whatever, I'd rather not look at a dude.

You'd like Contrast. (the main character at least)

last character I made in Skyrim was .. well sort of green .. big old nasty looking ork

Actually that game looks like a blast. I like the mechanic. DOnt' have an Xbone, though.

It's on Steam and fairly cheap. I was playing it last night with my daughters actually. The stepping into the shadows thing is pretty cool, especially when you start manipulating moving objects that cast shadows.

A white chick.

I tend to make characters based on what fits in the setting. If any character type would work, I try something new.

I just click through character creations as fast as possible not really paying attention to anything. Although, I guess when I'm playing the sims I choose a specific gender as needed and just hit random.

If it's a high-fantasy type game then I always like picking orc/goblin/troll type characters. If I have to play a humanoid then I always play a black guy with an afro or if an afro isn't available then a hot girl :D

I always go with elves in such a case, and once again make it look like my wife more or less.

I usually spend a decent amount of time when making characters. It really just depends on what is available in the game.

First comes stating abilities IF I have a preference for that game.

If not, then I just pick something.. usually female as I would rather look at a female than a male, and then go from there. I pretty much edit just about every aspect. Usually fair-ish skinned and then whatever the game offers that looks good with that.

The best ever game for character creation was in Tiger Woods Golf. You could edit everything and make pretty perfect likenesses of anybody. I really wish more games had that type of character creation. After making characters in that game, it saddens me in pretty much every other game that I make characters in.

I usually go doppelganger. Unless the game doesn't allow me to play as an orc/troll/goblin. :D

Nah, I usually play as a nimble female, because I always play sneak/assassin/martial artist types, where small frames and athletic builds make sense.

I usually make it at least somewhat like myself. It's just one more attempt at being part of the game I guess.

I'll admit what most won't - I'm a perv and prefer looking at digital bewbs and butts. So usually a hot white female. But not always - sometimes brothers/sisters, sometimes blue, sometimes old men with pot bellies, bad arse male zombies, sometimes chipmunks ala wildstar :)

I think we all have a preference / ideal for what makes a cool fantasy warrior, or a space shooter ranger and generally go for that - race, sex, etc. And I think that's ok. That's why the character creator is there in the first place - so you can make the hero that you enjoy playing the most.

Now, I will agree - you do see less non white toons than you'd think. I wonder if that's simply a representation of the larger gamer demographic. Are we mostly all white and nerdy? Now that I think about it - I have a fairly diverse group of friends/acquaintances. If you remove the white and nerdy, and the Asian - I think there's only one gamer left. And he's pretty casual at that...

I replicate myself, a 6'1" 200lb white guy, in every game that has a character creator.

It's kind of pathetic that so many guys play females because they "don't want to stare at a male the whole time", as if it will turn them gay or something.

I don't think that's the issue. In fact I see no issue. I'll use either, but I've created some pretty insanely cool female characters. They're also usually more suited to my playing style. For example, I like magic, so I use a Siren in Borderlands. Not only is it just the play style, but she looks insanely cool the way I've got her set up.

That said, I actually do just prefer female characters, female company, etc. I often joke with my wife and her friends that I'm a lesbian. (rather hang out with them than "the guys" and am also attracted to them...) :D Much like yourself, I'm a 200lb 6' 4" white fellow. Though I do have a rather nice tan rolling right now after getting back from the Dominican Republic for a couple weeks.

I find myself doing this. I'm an Asian male, but I seem to always create white characters. I know some people like to create dopplegangers of themselves, or at least characters within their own sex and race.

I'm sure it's a combination of psychology, preference, social conditioning, etc.

Feel free to psychoanalyze me.

Nothing wrong with being a banana.

You might not want to mention that to your wife ;)

If I am playing a 3rd person game, I'd rather play a female character than a male one. First person games, I don't really have any preference. It has nothing to do with turning gay lol. It has more to do with aesthetics. If given a choice I'd rather stare at 20-90 hours of a Female models than 20-90 hours of Male ones. It's really just that simple.

I also don't quite get the whole make a replicate of yourself idea. The whole point of games is to get away from reality, so why would you want to make yourself and play yourself in a fantasy world?

:D I didn't mean it quite that way, but yeah. hehehe (meant women in general) I do get along with all her friends very well, and we have a lot of mutual admiration and such. Besides, though some of her friends are pretty cute/hot/etc. she's the hottest of the bunch. She's got nothing to worry about. We also all get a bit wasted and go shoot pool together sometimes, and other fun activities.
