Windows 'Threshold': Microsoft's Plan To Win Over Windows 7 Users

Windows 8.1 Update 1 is every bit as good as Windows 7 and better.

But the name has been tarnished (mostly by those holdouts who can't move on from the start menu).

Of course their solution will be to re add the start menu for this crowd.

So what though? if a large enough portion of your userbase wants a start menu, then it'd be silly not to give it to them!

Other than getting my wife, sister and about a dozen in-laws hooked up with Windows 8 and up and running a lot better than you've been able to do then... what is your point?

Your family must be microsoft zombies or virtual avatars lol

The fact that most institutions around my area voting to keep 7/xp over 8 already speak volumes on win8's usability + problems.

why "fix" someone else's shit (micorosft's) when theres an option you can avoid it altogether?

Maybe some people love shit~ :D

Took M$ 3 years to get this lol.

Maybe another 2 to "fix" it... in win9 maybe??? :p:rolleyes:

till then , im sticking to win 7 , no such "self inflicted problems" :D

userbase is happy, admin is happy, makes my job so much easier~

Hopefully, MS will fix many of the things that are a problem with 8.

As just one example, why did they have to remove ad-hoc mode that makes creating wireless hot spots a pain where it takes just seconds in 7?

Also, a huge plus for helping others fix their machines is the legitimate availability of disk images for all Win 7 versions from Digital River that work with your legitimate key. Another not so easy thing for newb users in 8.

I don't know, all the non-technical users I know wouldn't have a clue about program defaults, windows key short cuts, etc. All they know is how to click the desktop shortcut to start the applications they want to run. Heck, my wife (been using computers for 15+ years) thought I upgraded her Word 98 to a later version when I put Libre Office on her machine. She just uses Thunderbird, IE (or Firefox) and Word (Libre Office) ;).

The only reason I know a fair amount about computers and operating systems is that computers have been a hobby for me since the 70's and that I'm a firmware/software developer. I enjoy the technology and knowing how it works. For the average consumer, there's no need for that knowledge.

I didn't say that the average Windows user would know how to change program defaults. However it's not an uncommon experience that default programs get changed, it happens all of the time automatically when programs are installed and sometimes people will wonder why a different app from the one they've always been using will no longer open automatically certain files. And that's generally very easy to do. Indeed the option to do that is in the File Explorer.

But I was thinking more about experienced Windows users that at some point HAD to come across this. It's just impossible to use Windows for long at a power user level and not come across a program default getting changed unwittingly.

Businesses are always slow to adopt new versions of Windows. And those that have just moved to 7 certainly were looking to move to 8.

The main reasons businesses don't move to a newer OS are generally 3 important reasons: It's too new to trust in terms of security and compatibility. Legacy software and/or security policies are not fully supported on the new OS. Or it costs too much to migrate and doesn't provide much in return.

Businesses don't give a flying fuck if employees are so simple that they get confused that there's both a Tiles UI and a Desktop UI. 8.1 has mostly fixed that though, and there's a nice little walkthrough that says, "if you want to do this, here is what you need to do."

Again, it seems like the people who continue to talk about how awful windows 8 is are still only drawing on a limited experience they had with the original windows 8 release, or regurgitating what others have said.

Windows 8.1 addressed pretty much all of the criticisms people voiced for original 8. The only quirk MS needs to 'fix' with 8.1 is defaulting to the Desktop screen on bootup if the user should prefer, rather than the tiles screen. But even so, there's a nice big "Desktop" tile that's easy to see and click on. Or just hit the windows button on the keyboard and you're dumped to the desktop. Everything else in 7 is functionally in 8.1, and much easier to access by simply hitting the windows key, and typing what you want. I literally had zero experience with 8/8.1 until 2 weeks ago, and I don't find it difficult or confusing to use in the slightest.

You do realize that you can customize it so only objects that you want are actually pinned in the start menu right?

Maybe I didn't make myself clear.

I do not want icons, of any kind, on the right side of the start menu. I want text-based links.

In other words, I want this :

Not this :

And by this crowd, do you mean like > 50% of all windows users?

Theres a word for this, its called the majority.:D

Probably. Most people hate change.

Been using Windows 8 since beta. Once they allowed you to use the same background for the start screen as you have on your desktop, then it became acceptable. (that was in the 8.0->8.1 update). Update 1 put minimize and close icons on Metro app which I would really appreciate if I used any Metro apps (but I don't).

In fact, I used Start 8 till Windows 8.1 was released because I hated boot to start screen and plain color backgrounds only for the start screen.

Go to task bar properties -> navigation. The option to boot to desktop is there (I think that is what you are talking about).

In other words, I want this :

However it all ends up, there should be more options than either 7 or 8. Nothing in 8 even know compels one to run modern apps, though there is the modern Search and PC Settings. I have a number of modern apps I run all of the time on my keyboard and mouse driven machines because they are better than using web sites or don't have a desktop equivalent.

I've learned it isn't worth it. The vast majority of Windows 8 complainers no zero about what they're complaining about. They just keep parroting something they heard a couple years ago and if you try and point out they're wrong they just call you names over and over.

I haven't seen the metro UI or tiles since the first week of setting up windows 8. Windows 8 has the majority of options people keep clamoring for but never want to hear that Windows 8 provides what they are asking for.

I'll keep using windows 8 and being productive and enjoying the many customizations it provides and I'll let others keep their beliefs regardless of how incorrect they are.

Probably. Most people hate change.

Wrong. People only hate change when it doesn't improve upon what they already had, and in Windows 8's case at least initially, regresses and makes it worse.

Trying to force a phone/tablet interface onto PC's was just NEVER going to work. And the people that still don't understand that now when Microsoft has already admitted defeat and moved on - well that's ignorance on the level of sticking your finger in a lighter socket multiple times per day.

I don't see where all the hate for live tiles is coming from. I thought everyone loved android widgets.

As for me, I turn all the live tiles off in win 8 as do I turn off the badge icons in iOS. These are just a distraction.

I've heard horror stories of porked laptops moving from 8 to 8.1. Drivers got uninstalled during the setup etc. I'm baffled but then again why would they make up something like that?

Looks like we will have to just wait and see really. That said, they stated they are doing the one thing I said from early Beta of Win 8 they should of done. "Detect the type of system it is installing on and give options according to that". I'm not too keen on the whole "roughly analogous" size wise statement as that gives me reason to believe that mockup is what they have in mind. In which case that tells me they still don't get why people hate the start screen. I don't want the shitty tiles period. But we don't have any hard facts yet so just got to wait and see at this point. Hopefully the wording of the article is just wrong and we get exactly what we are asking for. Traditional start menu for those that want that and start screen for those that want that.

I actually love the idea of live tiles... I just really dislike the execution. They'd of been awesome to pin to the desktop to replace the desktop gadgets from 7/vista. You could get realtime hardware monitoring/bandwidth/weather/etc info and could expand into a full blown application by clicking on it. I can honestly think of hundreds of awesome uses for them on the desktop.

Since they were limited to work only on the start screen (and within metro) , I can't save I've ever used them. I very rarely use that portion of 8 though since I run a start menu replacement.

I remember downloading some really well done gadgets back in the Vista days, and then getting bored with them and turning them off a week later. I don't need a bunch of flair and doodads on my desktop. If I want to check the weather or see the latest headlines or look at my email I'll open a web browser and look. I don't really mind the tiles as a design style for quick launch buttons, but I prefer a more minimalistic start menu:

This is more functional than the start screen, though they did eventually add the ability to shut down/log off.

Tiles in Windows 8 at this point are essentially dynamic icons. It really doesn't make any sense to abandon something that is overall superior static bitmapped icons. As more abilities are added to tiles resistance to them should dissipate. Of course if one is totally adverse to modern apps and doesn't use them then it is understandable why one wouldn't like them. I'm using more and more modern apps, even on multiple screen desktops all of the time and the ones with solid live tile support are pretty cool, like the Twitter client Tweetium, I never use the Twitter website anymore.

I think it is pretty obvious at this point that those of us who are anti metro are not interested in the whole modern apps thing. Again which is why we are advocating choice. I mean I've spent years keeping shit like "weatherbug" off my desktop because I don't want crap like that on my desktop, I'm pretty sure you aren't ever going to sell me on an entire ui based around that. :D

The new netmarketshare numbers for June are out and Win8/8.1 stopped growing last month.

Windows 7 is still on a steadily increasing path it's had since the beginning of the year, WinXP didn't drop significantly, OS X dropped somewhat sharply and "other" got a tiny bump.

http://arstechnica.com/information-...-8-x-internet-explorer-both-flatline-in-june/

Not exactly unprecedented this time of year. July will also be flat but there should be a pretty decent bump for 8.1 in August from the back to school rush. Plus we are coming towards the end of 8.x's flagship life cycle. The next major version of Windows will likely be out or close to it by this time next year. I imagine that once 9 is announced that 8.x will totally flatline at that point.

Thats why botnets exist, people choose to be ignorant over essentials.

No, botnets exist because of the asswipes that scam the gullible or less knowledgeable.

Most people just want to use their computers like an appliance, just a box to run their applications. Kind of like how most people just want to drive their car, they don't want to do the maintenance or repairs themselves.

Another issue at work here is that a lot of employees computers are locked down at work. They have no access to change system settings, install applications, etc. As a developer, I have local admin rights but non of the normal office staff do. How do you learn the complexities of standard windows if it's purposely being hidden from you? Once they get home, most of them have other obligations that will eat up their remaining free time so trying to learn more about Windows is pretty low on the list.

Heh, even though I've been building/programming computers since the 70's, I've never bothered to learn the Winkey shortcuts. Mostly because until last year I'd been using a ancient mechanical keyboard that didn't have that key (my work keyboard doesn't have it either). Since all the applications I normally use are on the quicklaunch or desktop there's still no imperative for me to learn them now.
