Quadfire 290X locks-up

I am experiencing issues with my 4-way 290x config and I've narrowed it down to the 4th GPU causing the problem. It doesn't matter which GPU I put in that 4th lane, it will lock up the rig.

Mobo: Asus Rampage IV Black
CPU: 4960X @ 4.5ghz
RAM: 32GB DDR3-1600
GPU: Quad reference 290X (7680x1600)
PSU: Dual Seasonic 1000W Platinum (first PSU powers a single GPU plus everything else, second PSU powers three GPU)
OS: Windows 8.1
Drivers: tried 14.4 and 14.6

Both CPU and GPU are on water, each their separate loop.

The behavior is this, and I've recreated the problem in multiple games, including Crysis 3, Battlefield 4, Elite Dangerous and Rise of Flight. I game for 5-10 minutes, then the screen freezes. Mobo debug led shows solid AA (no disruption). I've tried with CPU OC and no OC as well.

Only fix is a reboot, and sometimes, upon re-entering Windows, the 4th GPU simply disappears from device manager. It's like the system doesn't even see the 4th GPU anymore because it crashed. To fix this, I have to do a hard power down, disable eyefinity, and plug a monitor in the 4th card. This will wake it up without fail each time, and usually when entering windows again, the card will be recognized once more.
Then I re-enable eyefinity and crossfire and can play another 5-15 minutes before the behavior occurs again.

The fix? Disabling the 4th lane. Thankfully the mobo has switches that allow us to disable lanes without having to take out the GPU (mine are all on water so it'd be a pain). With 3-way 290X, I've haven't had so much as a hiccup in 20+ hours of gaming in BF4, Crysis 3, etc.

This seems to be drivers related, but I can't properly diagnose this as I've never had this many GPU before. My switch to 7680x1600 is recent, and I thought I could use the 4th GPU

Got a spare hard drive? Put a windows install on it and the drivers and see if the issue happens there. If its doesn't then if is a windows issue.

That's what I was thinking too. Do a clean install with just the VC drivers and see if it locks up.

Personal experience is 4-way 290X is garbage, whereas 3-way is very stable. I still have a 4-way setup (mainly because they are all under water and I don't feel like re-doing anything), but I've disabled the 4th GPU since it always hinders performance. I wish AMD would fix their drivers.

Post your problem @ JonnyGuru forums. There can be issues when running multiple PSU's. Basically when running more than one PSU to a single device if you have a voltage drop on one it will act as a power sync from the other PSU and can cause problems. Even thoug you are running 3 cards from one PSU they are still drawing from the other PSU through the PCIe. This might not be your issue, but it could be worth checking out. Just check there, because they are the experts on PSU's, and see what they say.

haha wow, exact same experience as me.

I will post on JonnyGuru and see what they have to say.
