PC Games just are not the same

I would say to maybe take up a fighting game (because they rock, and PC is starting to see more of them) but to really get the most out of it you'd likely want to invest in an arcade stick. Having someone to play/train with on a regular basis could make you keep interest and get better more quickly.

Were you ever into Counter-Strike? CS:GO is pretty faithful to the CS legacy afaik. MOBAs are really big right now though as far as online multiplayer...DotA and LoL are the biggest (you mention trying DotA).

I feel the same way, OP. It's funny because I have Mass Effect 3 on PC but only played the first hour. I bought it 2 days ago for my Wii U and have been enjoying the hell out of it. I'm honestly at the point where it's hard to sit down at the computer desk and play. Much rather sit on a nice comfy couch reclined with controller in hand and play. I've been gaming for over 20 years now and maybe it's just me getting old, but sitting in my office chair and playing games is so unappealing. The only trade-off is the control which is not as hard as I thought it would be, but definitely takes some getting used to if you've been playing on PC for a while like I have.

It's a welcome change of atmosphere. And with the Wii U it's kind of neat in that like when my wife came home yesterday I was deep into the game and did not want to stop but she wanted to watch Netflix. So I turned the input of the Tv over to the PS3 with the Wii U gamepad, she started watching netflix, I plugged my earphones into the Wii U gamepad and continued playing Mass Effect 3 using only the Gamepad. That was one of those this-is-cool kind of moments for me.

Hopefully EA gets back to releasing on the Wii U eventually, and hopefully in 2014. I would love to play Mass Effect 1 and 2 again. I may just buy the trilogy on PS3 to do that. The Gamepad on the Wii U is really useful though in Mass Effect 3 with the glance-at map and quick access to character abilities during combat.

Anyway, the only thing I can suggest is to find yourself something new. I don't game 90% as much as I used to 5 years ago, but I find that when you go a while without it and come back to a game it feels a lot more fulfilling than hopelessly scrolling through a increasingly large Steam backlog with no motivation to play any of them (even though you keep buying games). lol.

You could always hook your computer up to an hdtv, get a lapdesk with a wireless keyboard and mouse and get an xbox wireless usb reciever and play with a controller on a comfy couch. Much better exeperience than consoles, plus you don't have to pay for internet on top of your internet bill already. I did this in both living rooms, have all my movies on my hdd, music, netflix, games, etc. I never have to leave the couch to even surf the web.

What's different about it?

No one plays the way I used to play back in the day.

DM/TDM
Low gravity
NoInvisi
Translocator
155% game speed
55% air control

CTF
Low Gravity
InstaGib
155% game speed
55% air control

Both game types in maps specially designed for the game style. The DM maps were based on giant versions of bathrooms, kitchens, livingrooms, bedrooms, garages, etc... While CTF maps were generally open with lots of room to move.

just brought UT up.. over 100 servers in Deathmatch alone... indeed UT hasnt gone anywhere..

Which version of UT? 99, 2003, 2004 or UT3? I remember when there were thousands up.

Those were the days....I still have fond memories of those huge maps. What was great about it was that it never got old like modern online FPS's. Always new maps, new game modes....something to suck you right back in. When they came out with invasion, I think that kept me occupied for a year of casual gaming.

Did you ever play ZARK? Like you, I played a lot of low grav/high game speed CTF but started in ZARK and eventually moved to instagib with high fire rates. ZARK was sniper rifles - 2 shots to the body or 1 to the head for a kill.

Yeah I played Zark/Ak47/Assualt rifle servers. I used to hose a Jailbreak Ak47 (Similar to the Zark, only it held 250 rounds of ammo instead of 30 and had a slightly higher rate of fire) server. Those eventually moved onto camper style where you had to be absolutely still to get the high fire rate non-sense. The run n gun of the old style died out.

I play CS:GO atm and have been exploring other games to play. If you like snowboarding/skiing games I say try Snow. It is in alpha so it can be buggy, but it is what a winter sport game should be, open sand box with many spawn points pick your own line sorta deal.

Your just growing up and possibly growing out of gaming. I would recommend taking a break for a while(few months) and come back to it. You might appreciate it again.

Not sure if it's becoming an adult, and growing out of gaming.

But more of, you can only find that one orgasm of a first person shooter once, lets say Quake. Or your favorite RTS game, might have been Star Craft1, and now SC2 feels like more of the same, or your first MMO might have been Ever Quest 1, and all other MMO's since them just don't capture the same feeling anymore.

And I think, the reason is, because you can only pop your cherry once in each genre. Once you've been hooked and addicted to Ever Quest 1 in the late 90's, you just can't get the same feeling again with a newer MMO.

basically the way i see it is, back in the day we were figuratively and literally in our childhood of gaming where every thing was new and awesome. now we grew up and every thing is repetitive and boring, its still entertaining but only a fraction if how it used to be. with a few exceptions of course.

Agree. Games are glacially slow to evolve gameplay. Look at BF1942, the first of the Battlefield series, was released over a decade ago. End of the day, BF1942 and the new BF4, aren't radically different, yes the graphics are much better on BF4 of course, but gameplay still seems pretty much the same, they are pretty much the same exact game, 10 yrs apart.

Look at Diablo l to Diablo ]l[, a 15 year difference between the two games, end of the day, bedside better graphics, the two play very similarly, nothing drastically different.

I think that's the problem, most of the games we play today all originated in the 90's PC era, and are now just more of the same, with only the better graphics being the upgrade, but gameplay hasn't evolved much, if at all since then.

is there any real solid pc games out there with replay value?
im downloading dota 2 right now, my friend and i are looking for a co-op game. we tried orcs must die and payday 2. beat em, or got tired. guess its because we are the diablo 2 generation/quake2/q3/unreal ect, seems like games just dont have a great replay value or we just got old lol

anyone got suggestions? diablo 3 he hates, and i got tired of. just not the same, SC2 gets old after a day of non stop playing.

I'm so proud of you, you're all grown up now.

But seriously, PC gaming is currently better than ever minus the MMO genre.

You can play old-school Q3 on quakelive.net and there's a great community. There are old-school singleplayer shooters such as Alien Rage, Bulletstorm, etc. Counter-Strike GO, BF3, and COD Ghosts are all top notch multiplayer shooters.

There are better experiences now than D2 such as Path of Exile, Torchlight 1 & 2, Van Helsing, etc.

I believe you have just outgrown gaming and your memories of those games are sentimental

EA's Motor City Online and WoW Burning Crusade expansion were the best gaming experiences I ever had. I haven't played and enjoyed a video game in over a year now and I really miss the cheap entertainment.

I agree completely with outgrowing and constantly trying to find that "cherry popping" awesomeness but only to be let down.

I'm playing SC: Blacklist with my buddies online and coop. Its been very fun so far, give it a go.

This is horrible god damn advice. Nobody who is remotely better at the game than a single celled bacteria plays on the PC. The entire community that can managed to figure out basic combos is on one of the consoles. Last generation it was PS3 because Namco uses Sony hardware in the arcade so everything is 100% perfect, and Japanese players are always on the Japanese consoles network (PC is for dating and rape simulators there). It's always been like this as well, the entire community migrates to one or two systems and sits there, leaving the other options full of the worst players out there. Don't play in the kiddy pool, it's full of pee and obnoxious kids.

Telling someone to pick up fighting games on the PC is like telling them to take up Starcraft on console.

Quake 2 CTF back in the day, couldn't be beat. Grappling hook and all. I still remember the dinging sound the captured flag made. Good times. I haven't had so much in an online shooter, except maybe BF1942, not the newer BF games, they just more of the same, only prettier.

Grapple bitching in Quake World was glorious, as was Quake World Team Fortress....

/me goes off to install Quake.

Are there still servers playing Quake 2 CTF ? And does the game work on modern PC's with high res monitors ?

Yes and yes, but you'll have to do some digging to find people to play with. There are even some traditional QW servers active, too.

Yes, I'm not sure how active they are though (was always a 1v1/TDM guy), duel and DM is active though.

The standard client doesn't support wide screen, modified clients however do... and a lot of them have updated special effects as well. It's like Doom 2 where the fans keep updating it. For Quake 1 you want ezquake or fuhquake (same shit by same guy just different versions, it's updated) for Quake 2 you want EGL Quake 2 or whatever the latest update. These will get you the complete game client with all the visual enhancements. Pretty sure EGL Quake will pull 1080p as a custom resolution, I still have an old NEC 22inch CRT I keep around for Quake.

EDIT - here you go http://sourceforge.net/projects/echongl/?source=dlp

Mods can delete if they want, but pretty sure the source code is public and dead certain id doesn't give a rats ass. Consider it's these clients that keep the game alive.

There are a LOT of Quake World servers out there and even the odd cash tournament. The problem is (and this holds for Quake 2 as well) you need to look through IRC channels to find the ones that are constantly packed with spectators and a wait list.

Yea. It's absolutely worth the dig if you want a break from modern shooters. QW is the grandfather of arena shooters, and still holds the title for one of the best games ever made.

Great thanks, will check this out alter tonight :) :)

The momentum based movement of Quake World and the ability to juggle with rockets or climb someone up the wall with the lightning are still very addictive. It's just a game where it's fun to move in and fun to shoot in, plus it's still faster than anything else.

The only downside is some of the people remaining are really god damn good. There's a fair amount of fresh blood, but some of the names have been around since the 90's.

No doubt. I've been practicing a bit, but I doubt I can keep up with those guys like I did back then.

QW handle was DM {Interdictor}

Hahaha

Yeah I got back into it a few years ago after running into Jason (aka Unholy http://wiki.quakeworld.nu/Death_Row ) in a project. He hauled a friend in and that friend hauled me in. Took me a while to get my legs back, been good since.

I will say this though, you want a CRT. As batshit crazy as it sounds, the game just handles better going at 4:3, it's fast enough to clobber the fastest LCDs, and you might want to drop your res as well. It's one of the few games where CRT, low sense/wired/optical mouse, mechanical keyboard, massive mouse pad, insanely good positional sound, low resolution, 4:3, are pretty much mandatory if you don't want to get your skull smashed in repeatedly.

It can be done without it, but the guys who are still 1v1'ing all night are all playing on the above platforms and will make you pay. It's also kinda odd, when you consider just how long people have been playing the game.

What client are you using? Have you tried the air rocket pit training option in fuhquake?

ezquake, and no.

My CRT shit the bed a year or so ago and I haven't found a proper replacement. So, nothing majorly competitive at the moment.

People will play them until the network protocols they use simply no longer exist. It's kind if funny, but it's true.

There are people who still play Doom competitively.

I jumped on some Quake2 DM servers a couple months back... got my ass handed to me at first but got a few good kills in. The people left on the servers I jumped on I think have been playing for years and years and years.... and years.

PC games have gone downhill a lot i almost regret getting my 2 780 classified cards.

Why not just buy a amazon basics HDMI cable for ten bucks and hook it up to your HDTV? That's what I plan on doing with my 60" tv. :)

yea that's good game and runs well. Before i got my 780s i had a single 770 and played it with that was very pleased.
Thats one of the very few good games IMO

Games are a user based experience....'

It's not the card it's the person playing....

Sounds to me like you need a second (not a replacement) hobby. Sounds like you still like games, but are getting bored and listless. A little while back I was kind of nudged into building, then designing, etc. analog modular synthesizers. Once I started laying out circuit boards, and spending all of my free time doing this other hobby, I forgot about games for a little bit.

Every so often, I'll see a game that sparks a little interest, so I will start playing. Quite a few have sucked me in to the point of beating them, (Dishonored was one of them...) which I had kind of stopped doing for a while. I would spend tons of time just staring at Steam, or an emulator games list, or the like, wondering what I should play. Then ultimately deciding not to play anything.

Well, now that I have something else occupying the spare time, when I do see a cool game I jump on it, and play it. It's not like I'm sitting there wishing I could decide. The decision was made automatically that it caught my attention enough in the first place.

Also echo the Wii U statements in this thread. Nintendo systems are the PERFECT complement to a PC. Between the two, you can play a very varied array of game types, styles, mechanics, etc. Trying to find something new on an XB One or PS4 is kind of silly because they're the same types of games you have on the PC already.

Indie games are great too! If you want to play something co-op, check out Monaco. It's really quite fun, and is cheap to pick up a few copies for your friends. I've spent quite a few hours on that one with friends/family.

Anyway, as others have said, branch out a bit. Take a little break if you need to. Find something else to do for a bit, so that the next game that catches your eye comes out of nowhere. Following the scene a bit too closely can also ruin a game by the time it gets out. You feel like you've already played it.

Good luck

There were a TON of great PS3 exclusives that never made it to the PC, especially if you're a fan of Japanese games. Furthermore even some stuff that was multiplatform, like say Street Fighter, you want to be on a console because that's where the community is.

Consoles are worth it because there are always enough exclusives to justify the purchase.

I think you missed my point. I also didn't say that there weren't exclusives that were worth playing, or that owning the other consoles wasn't a good idea. I said that the best console to offset the type of games available on a PC would be the Wii U (or other Nintendo system) purely because the typical types of games available are very much different (other than some multiplatform ports) than what's on it, and the other consoles. We don't need to get as granular as any specific game here. If you want to take a break from PC gaming once in a while, but still want to game, I still don't think there is a better way, or a way that contrasts more than Nintendo. That's my opinion of course, but I see it echoed very frequently. PC/Wii U combo covers a lot of ground. The other consoles have their places too, I just wouldn't say you're going to get a vastly different experience from a PC on them other than controller type (and as you mentioned) differing communities for some types of games.
