Thinking about getting the x5660 as a new chip, but I'm wondering if it will support non-ecc ram or will I have to get a new MB/RAM for ecc support? Currently using a i7-920 with 12 GB ram on a Asus P6T deluxe

you can drop it in that board just fine, don't hesitate :)

YES! exactly what I wanted to hear...At long last a 6/12 core/hyper threading monster is mine!

I don't know about using older bios's but using 2209 here and never had an issue...How much is that cpu going for? Was just curious as the L5639 sells for around $75...but maybe you get to a higher overclock

I scored a deal for two locally that I couldn't pass up. They are avg. around 220-260$+ on ebay.

Installed chip today. I'm very pleased with the performance, here is a look at cpu-z/core temp with prime 95 running (v.27)

How much?

I just saw a guy that selling ~12 of them in the FS/FT forum for $190 OBO IIRC..I am sure you could get him down to ~$175..Keep in mind these babies are the same silicon as the 980/990X, just without the unlocked multiplier..The great thing is that Asus MBs (not sure about other brands) can lock the "Turbo" Multiplier as you see in Thorin's screenshot above..With a 21X multiplier, you only need 210~210 BLK to reach 4.4~4.5Ghz speeds! IF you get a great chip, which these should be since they are top binned Xeons, 4.6~4.7Ghz isn't outta the question if you have a board that doesn't mind high BLK clocks..My old Asus Rampage II Extreme, which was a super picky board, did up to 220Mhz BLK with 3 different chips..

That is a pretty sweet chip there my friend! It clocks better then my I970 did (voltage wise)..You have plenty of headroom, I would take it up to 1.42V and you should be able to reach 4.3~4.4Ghz, if not higher..Hell I would just bump the BLK to 205Mhz and see if it is stable with the current Vcore..Those chips should clock Very well, just like the 980/990X..Most of those could do 4.5Ghz easy, with the better then average ones reaching 4.7~4.8Ghz...

One other thing I noticed, is that you are running your ram @ 1600 @ 2T...The 1366 platform LOVES fast ram, and 1T timing as well..I wouldn't sacrifice a ton of CPU speed, but finding a good balance is usually worth it..You can take the IMC up (voltage wise), just PLEASE make sure to keep your Voltage (Vtt) within .5V of your DRAM Voltage, or you will cook your IMC pretty quickly.

Voltages are pretty much as low as then can go to get a prime95 stable. Anything less and I lock up pretty consistently. I agree that this chip has way more headroom to play with, but alas my AIO cooling can only muster so much...which is still pretty freaking amazing :D for me.
The chips in the FT/FS section are the x5650, a lower clock base at 2.66 but I'm sure they are great overclockers as well.

CPU:1.36
CPU PLL:1.90
Vtt:1.33
Dram:1.66

Haven't really played with the ram timings, but messing with it is a pain in the ass when I do. Supposedly the board can handle 24 gb, but I wonder what the maximum single size module it can truly recognize.

p6t can handle 8gb dimms, not officially, but there are quite a few forum postings out there if you search.

x5650 looks nice but it is over twice the price. Can someone tell me if I need to buy i7-920 in order to update BIOS and install one of the Xeons. I have Sabertooth in my closet.

Twice the price of what? x5650/60 are going for over 200.00$ minimum on fleebay. The deal in FT/FS thread is very reasonable.

I am sorry but the deal is not reasonable. L5639 is $80 with best offer on ebay. x5650/60 does also have best offer option.

The L5639 has a maximum multiplier of 16. You would have to over clock the bclk up to 250! Just to get to an over clock of 4.0 GHz. Not to mention the voltages and thermal issues that it would have to take to get it there and a motherboard that can even get you there. The premium in price is well justified with the higher multiplier. And since it performs ultimately better than any L5639 ever would at the same blck rate and lower voltage, the cpu pays for itself over time in electricity. Go ahead and low ball those users with a best offer of less than 150$ and let me know what kind of responses you get.

Sure it does. lol

I don't know what you mean, because everything I said is true. Its ultimately gonna depend on a individual basis what a good value is. For me its a great value, my work at home is very thread heavy for decoding security surveillance into different formats. If it does it faster and more efficient than its a win for me.

L5639 does 18x.

I have easily pushed mine over 4Ghz on air, but run it @3600 cause it is more than enough at 3600.

That's a nice multiplier, but not every chip/motherboard is the same. What are your temps on air in prime95 when your clocking it at 4.0 GHz? What voltage? Im not saying its not a fantastic value at 80$. But if you want more power (4.5+ GHz) at safe voltages then there is going to be a premium for it. I've yet to meet or be informed by a L5639 owner that they run their PC 4.5+ on a daily basis. If there are some I would like to see screenshots

I got mine stable at 210bclk, but never went past that, plus I only wanted 200bclk. Nice to know I have some overhead. I only went that high to make sure I was solid at 200. Temps were ok idle but got north of 70 at load. With water I am sure it would run all day and be fine. My 3600 is at 1.288 V.

Did I say anything about your chip not being a great value? I can't justify paying $185 for a chip clocked @ 2.66GHz while you can get one @ 2.13GHz for $80. I understand it performs great and you are happy but I do not need more than 3.6/8Ghz with a cheaper one. :)

Do you have any idea if this chip is going to work with Asus Rampage Iii Formula X58? I do not have any 1366 cpus at home.

Thank you for the link. I've got few G.skill sticks 4x4GB 1600MHz 1.5v, SSD, Corsair A70 and MSI TwinFrozr HD7950. That Rampage is a a great looking board and I can't resist having a hexa core CPU. 4Ghz would be nice but as I said it is a bit too pricy.:(

If you get a good chip, then you might be able to get to 3.9Ghz..The best I have seen is 220BLK, which will net you 3960Mhz with a 18X multiplier, so basically 4Ghz:p...Even if you can only reach 3.8Ghz, that is a pretty powerful chip, especially if you can use the multi-threading power it offers..

I loved my I970 @ 4.2Ghz..I just wanted SATA 3 and the upgrade bug bit me..I lucked out by getting a Golden 3770K on my first attempt..It is a speed demon, and will soon see 5Ghz on a daily basis once my 290's GPU block finally arrives!

I found this review on a Chinese website. That is CPU is amazing. I might want to sell my 3770k.

Just noticed you pulled the trigger on a board/chip in the FS/FT. Would love to compare some benching with ya if your game :D.

Let's do it then.:) I will install either GTX680SC or MSI HD7950 TwinFrozr 1150/1450. The seller has to get back to me on small discoloring on one of the CPU pins.

We can compare both, I match up pretty well with my 7970, and a stock evga 680gtx.

I bought this CPU of ebay, a few day ago hope it will arrive soon. Going to replace my i7 920@ 4.2ghz running on Asus P6T. Initially I was looking for I7 980, but the guy in the other forum want $600 AU for it :(.
