XBox One Owners' Thread (First Impressions, Thoughts, You Happy?)

I hate going off-topic again, but is this a fucking troll post or something? You went with a 45K'ish car, because you didn't want to spring for the 100k+ car (which you could presumably afford)? Now you're also comparing two more 100k+ cars? I'm confused as fuck.

Nope. Not trolling. I wanted a two seater roadster but I loved the C63 look so I opted for the Aston Martin Vantage and C350 as I didnt want to pay for two $150k cars. My last cars were BMW 135i and Audi TTRS, which I tracked. I typically get a new car a year.

Arriving broken is not a XB1 or PS4 problem but a damn damage problem due to shipping abuse. Don't ship fragile electronics that get thrown and kicked by UPS. Look for a large local retailer that received bulk on a pallet to minimize the risk.

My XB1 arrived beat up via UPS but thankfully it appears to be working fine. I was a tad worried when the box was smashed in and scraped up. I think inadequate packaging is a bigger blame as e-tailers really skimp on the packing materials. Mine did not have anything to keep the XB1 box from slopping around the bigger box it was in.

So for those who have the system, what sorts of demos are available in the marketplace? Just most of the launch titles? Anything up there that isn't out yet?

From what I saw, it's just your standard games. The first thing I did when I got the PS4 was check to see if any indie games were there, and the same thing with the Xbox One. The PS4 wins in this category, unless I was completely blind and missed it (which wouldn't surprise me).

Anyway, first impressions:

The unit is heavy. After seeing the PS4, I was quite surprised. You'd think the Xbox One would have significantly better hardware if based on weight alone.

Incredibly long install times.

TV Integration is nice if you're lacking HDMI ports, but I'd just rather get a switcher. Too many issues right now (surround sound support is only in beta.)

Confusing interface. The first thing I wanted to do was change privacy and setup other things, and that's not available without hitting the button where the start use to be (whatever it's now called). Am not really a fan of the auto-login being tied to the Kinect. Why can't I auto-login and just use this as a gaming console, and not a home entertainment system which is to be on 24/7?

Beware the green screen of death. The first time you install, there's a very good chance you'll probably be afraid your system broke as you'll wait around for 2-3 minutes after the reboot on the static splash screen that doesn't give you any indication something's going on in the background.

This is my first time with Kinect, and the red lights on it give me a slight headache.

Working D Pad. Finally!

Quiet, which is nice. My PC is now my loudest system, and that is quieter than both my PS3 & Xbox 360. This new gen of consoles is nice and quiet.

The ability to turn off game recording is nice. This is something that bugs me with the PS4. I'd rather have that extra processing power put to enhancing games instead of capturing video I'll just get through a PVR to begin with. But I guess game captures are nice for people without the gear. Fortunately the Xbox isn't tied to Facebook.

Like the PS4, many apps, particularly the video ones, don't exist at the moment. So I still need to use my Xbox 360 and PS3 for HBO Go, Amazon Prime, etc.

At the moment, both my PS4 and Xbox One are still expensive paperweights outside of a game for each system just to see the systems in action. I still think they both could have been much more powerful, But as far as games go, I really haven't been thrilled with launch titles since the SNES days, so I'll wait a little and give both the XB1 & PS4 some slack.

I'm glad to say that my xbox came with no hardware problems. I didn't buy any games for it yet... since I don't care to play any of their launch titles. Anywho, the box was nicely packed. That's my favorite thing about it so far.

Does anyone know how to watch TV with the xbox off? It plays with the xbox on, but as soon as I turn off the xbox, I have no more cable tv. :(

purchased the ps4 launch day. patched up and logged into my account, and playing a game in a couple of minutes.

purchased the xb1 launch day, and i'm still trying to get it going. xbox live down, dns servers down, it assigned me a gamer tag automatically to my @live address, and now i can't associate my gamer tag to it. there is no option to switch associated account to the tags so i can swap them around. there is no management for it on xbox's website. i'm a good 4 hours into it trying to just get thing to play a damned game.

I still can't figure out when you can actually access the LE content, stuck going through the beginning races without much choice to do anything else.

Are the green box systems just the regular systems vs the Day One launch systems coming in black boxes?

I didnt pre-order early so I didnt get a Day one Edition. The only difference is the box, and controller. The box is negligible but the controller on the Day One Edition has the chromed D-Pad and the marking that says Day One Edition.

I was in the same boat. Now I am just trying to figure out how to watch tv with the xbox turned off\standby mode.

Wow. Seems depressing.

Xbox live has been up solid not sure what issue you had the status has looked like this with zero downtime that initial update didn't even take me 10 minutes

repeated DNS server errors for me. the patch took over an hour once i did get in. i'm on a fairly good connection (50mbit), and i'm 2 hours south of microsoft.

I'm finally in Forza now, nice game. still can't sort out the gamer tag thing, won't let me change it.

There's an option to remove your account from the Xbox. Do that and then sign in with your other account.

So far I am using mine without the kinect even hooked up and everything works fine for me.

Only played Dead Rising 3 for a little bit but I'm enjoying it.

Was thinking about Renting Ryze, doesn't seem like a game you'd want to buy though with it's repetitive combat/short campaign.

Not much of a racing fan so no Forza.

Honestly Ryse is a total pass. I think even as a rental its going to be disappointing ultimately. Its just such a vapid game. Beautiful but vapid (as is often the case in real life..).

I still can't figure out when you can actually access the LE content, stuck going through the beginning races without much choice to do anything else.

in previous iterations, the LE content such as cars were not special designated. they were simply available in the store for in-game purchase (where for lesser editions they showed as locked content requiring a DLC purchase) or as in FM4, a reward car option. The main draw however is the VIP access, in which Turn10 regularly sends you gift cars or a large chunk of change when DLC is released so that you can purchase one of the new cars. I think with FM4, between LE and VIP bonuses, I got around 50 extra cars and easily 1 mil in in-game credits. combined with the clarkson hardcover book, it was well worth the 10$ premium

Yeah, the problem with this one seems to be you have to choose a free car from a limited selection to start the game, you can't tune it yourself and then have to race it for 5 races before you can start to do anything on your own. After that first series you can finally start to do stuff. I don't remember the old ones doing that to you. Forza Rewards seem to be working pretty well too, got 70k extra to start with.

Another thing I don't like is when you purchase a vehicle to use for a specific series, they have it tuned for that series already, so you pay extra for those parts. Then you have to go back, remove half of the parts they thought you wanted and then pay to put on the stuff you actually want. Hopefully you can get around it by just buying the car outside of the series screen, haven't had a chance to test it yet though, not that far yet.

So after spending a few hours with it last night I can say I am disappointed. Microsoft really failed to deliver.

The TV functionality is awful. I haven't tried controlling it with Kinect yet as it was late and I didn't want to make a ton of noise. Using a controller is horrid. Simply trying to channel surf is painful. When pressing up or down to switch channels, instead of a next channel command it inputs the full number so it takes 3 seconds or so just to go up one channel. There is also no simple way to input a channel number with the controller. Overall the hyped TV feature is a massive bust.

Setup took a very long time and had several pauses in it. Not very user friendly.

Install times for games is much longer than PS4 before you can start playing.

The QR code scanning of Kinect works very well, cool feature.

The OS menu layout is awful and constantly shifts.

D-Pad feels very cheap and almost seems to click in as you use it.

Only tried Dead Rising 3. Fun game.

Looks like a console with a lot of promise that just doesn't deliver right now.

I just noticed the covers of One games is gray background with a single cropped image over-layer. That looks really cool.

Most of this I posted in another thread.

A lot of these reviews seem to take about the looks of the console. Who really cares? It blends in with other avr stuff, thats all I care about. If anything I wish it was wider so it matched a little better. I prefer the square look vs the round ps3 or even the angled look of the ps4.

First Impressions:

The setup went pretty smooth with my xbox one. I must say I wasn't expecting the setup of the tv and verizon cable box controls to go as fast and simple as it did. I do hope in the future they work with the cable box via IP(verizon already supports this via their own app for phones) so it just uses the xbox interface completely. That would be amazing.

I'm not going into the kinect as not enough really seems to use the hand controls yet other than saying whoever at MS is responsible for them not ensuring that wall and tv mounts would be available at launch needs to be beaten. Makes in unusable to me and a bunch of people I know because it doesn't sit high enough sitting in front of the tv.

Voice controls will take some getting use to but seemed to work ok for the most part. If you deal with the voice commands on phones it shouldn't be a big deal. I will say I don't like how switching between 2 apps when using snap needs the voice command to do without going around in a circle and shouldn't be like this.

The controller is pretty good but I'm not a fan of the shoulder buttons. They could be a lot better(same can be said for the 360). Two things I don't like. One I'm not sure the mico-usb is the way to go on the back of the controller. Universal connectors are nice but the old setup was designed to take some more abuse and come off if tripped over. At very least I wish they had put a quick break away connector in the play and charge kit's cable like the first xbox and xbox 360's wired controller had.

Friends app sucks compared to the old setup. I don't want to drop out of tv or anything else or have to snap it to the side to pull it up. I like the old setup where it pops up in front of what your are doing. I really hope they add the friend menu back to the pop up when you hit the start button.

I will say the new way of scanning codes works so much better than the old way. It is what I wanted the first kinect to do.

Overall the interface screams unfinished and in many ways the 360 interface works better. Still it shows a lot of potential.

I will add that I'm really disappointed that MS doesn't have a remote control for this(it will not work with a media center remote like the last one). I'm looking forward to a wireless headset as well although the included one isn't bad. The voice quality seems good. It attaches to the controller though like it never wants to come off. Also I want another chat pad.

Went to my buddies house last night and played Ryse and Forza 5. Ryse had pretty good graphics, especially the characters. Gameplay was boring and we turned it off after about 30min. The game basically played itself and all you do is press A to block, X to hit and RT for a finisher when prompted. That's it, there's no combos or anything like that. Forza was good, especially with the new haptic triggers on the X1 controller. The graphics on that game were pretty shitty though. The cars looked good and the track and grass were decent but everything else was terrible. The trees looked like cardboard cutouts and the crowds were not detailed. I'm not sure if my friend has a faulty unit but are you guys having insane load and install times? Ryse took about 40 minutes to install and Forza was around 30min. With Ryse after about %10 it said we could start the game but once we did it just went to a installation progress screen. So far on PS4 the longest I've had to wait before playing is about 2min. I'm wondering if his optical drive is faulty as there have been people with completely broken disc drives out of the box.

Pretty sure that is the norm what you're describing from everything i've been reading.

Is there an HDMI version requirement? I tried connecting my One using a 25' HDMI cable and it didn't work until I swapped in the 3' cable provided in the box.

Those installs include the downloading and install of patches as well it all happens without user interference none of my install took anywhere near that long the initial install was super fast and game installs I'm on a 100mb Comcast connection not a single install took that long for me.

I have installed
Killer instinct full version
Cod ghosts
Ryse
Forza5
Crimson dragon
Assassins creed 4
Nba2k14
Dead rising 3
Plus all the apps

It all was fast and trouble free and silent

How long did Ryse and Forza 5 take for you? He has 25MB internet but I doubt the patch for the games (if there are some) would be big enough to warrant 30-40min download.

Brother in law got one. It's nice. Not $500 nice, though. He's played Ghosts and says that it looks a little better than the 360 version, but not a whole lot. He's spent the rest of the night/day using Hulu, Amazon, Netflix. About the same as he did with the 360.

It's a nice machine, but without the really killer games (Ryse looks good, Forza is cool) it's just not worth it to me right now. I canceled my preorder and am waiting until The Division and Titanfall drop before I go pick one up.

I don't know for sure but it wasn't that long
The ryse patch was almost 1.5gb as was Forzas I remember they were well over agig and a half each.

But when the installs occur they DL patch and commence install it all happens together.

You probably just need a better HDMI cable to go that long. I had a lot of problems with long Monoprice cables doing a ceiling mount projector install and had to get a better cable.

Holy crap. I guess that could be why it took so long to install.

I just caught the warning for it. I started my installer and then started playing with everything on the system so I didn't notice. I did buy COD online and for being 40 gigs it took like an hour and a half to download. Not bad, not good but it was launch day.

Anyone else notice their system making sounds when it's turned off???

I have it sitting up on my desk (it's hooked to my pc monitor) and with it turned off I just randomly hear it making a sound like it's turning or doing something.

Happens every few minutes and it's annoying as hell.

It's not in the "standby" mode is it? I used the controller and selected "turn system off" that's how you turn it off completely right?

No it's asleep unless you disable that in settings but why do that?
