Recommend me a MMO

I'm thinking about getting back into MMOs. I played Runes of Magic a while back, then sort of forgot about it. I always played solo, mainly due to my working a shifting schedule. But I can be more regular now, so would like to play in a group. I'm very much a casual gamer so EVE isn't for me.

I'd like a fantasy MMO - monsters, magic, dragons, etc - but would consider a sci-fi one. I'm not keen on the levelling nature of WoW or Runes of Magic and many others. I'd prefer a single shared world, but failing that being able to move servers on a whim easily and instantly will suffice. I'm not really fond of grinding, but I recognise that it does have its place in the learning of abilities.

I'm not fussed as to freemium or subscription, though I'd prefer to try before I buy.

So, recommend me a MMO that will suit me.

Neverwinter - F2P. Currently playing and having a blast. FPS style targeting. Very solo friendly. Each class gets a companion of your choice.
Rift - Basic WoW clone that recently went F2P. On the fly spec changes.

I could sit here and post a long opinion of mine on both, but you'll get a better feel of each one watching youtube videos of each.

+1 for Rift

Edit: Keep an eye on Wild Star, it's on the horizon still but is looking very promising.

Don't. Get a r-life. Seriously your heart will thank you.

they are incredible time sinks dude. they are games without ends

It's not the game as much as it is the person. I have a wife, 3 kids, a full-time job, and am a full-time student. Over the years I've played most of the major MMOs casually. It's completely feasible to only play a game like Guild Wars 2 or Neverwinter for 2-3 hours a week if you want, there isn't a big focus on getting straight to the level cap and doing hardcore raiding with most MMOs nowadays, especially since you're not paying a monthly fee.

With a game like WoW it is a little more dangerous. Paying the $15 a month might make one feel kind of obligated to play and get their money's worth, and when you get to end-game you're expected to try and get the best gear and raid. Even when I played WoW though with a raiding guild I didn't play more than 6 hours a week if that, basically only for raids. Needing to follow a schedule for raids didn't work too well with having young kids though, so I quit. It's not an addiction unless you let it be.

But yeah do at least make sure you are getting out the house and hanging out with friends once or twice a week.

in that case it definitely is the game!

although i think its more like both

you make good points, guild wars 2 is a good suggestion good game to play casually.

Casually? Guild wars 2

Other games just so you can look at them are

Dragons prophet
Tera online
Rift
Marvel heroes
Neverwinter

Rift may be a WoW clone but it is a good one. At least it was back in the beginning when it came out. I havent tried this new f2p version. I'm wondering how many will still be playing it after a month or so?

Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn is very promising. The original FF14 was garbage, so they completely rebuilt the game from the ground up. I got to play in the most recent beta and had a blast. The game is out in August for $30. Subscription fee is the standard $15/mo for full access. It's $13/no if you only want one character....not even really worth the savings though imo.

Edit- forgot to mention that open beta should start in July sometime, and all open beta characters will carry over to launch if you choose to buy the game.

I was an avid Old Republic player from launch right up until they went FTP. I took a long break from the game after that.

Then my girlfriend wanted to try playing a co-op game with me, so we both downloaded ToR. While the FTP retrictions are annoying as hell (especially for the players who came from unlimited access) it's still a fantastic game to enjoy casually. We've logged maybe 5 total hours over the last month together without spending a dime on it. If you're going to get hardcore with it, I suggest paying the sub. Otherwise, you're free to enjoy the storylines and anything else pretty much.

honestly i loved SWTOR when it came out. it had some serious end game flaws but the game was sweet.

unfortunately FTP absolutely destroyed it

I wouldn't say it destroyed it, but it definitely nerfed the fuck out of it and made it into a much more casual game. That said, I wouldn't have touched it but the girlfriend suggested it and it's been pretty decent to play for 30 minute spurts.

How many of these MMOs fit my criteria? SW:TOR is level based and Guild Wars has servers / worlds, for examples.

Not a fantasy setting, but "The Secret World" was actually pretty good when it came out. Not level based, it's skill point/gear based. The quests were a wide range of stuff, and most could be repeated to "skill up" if you wanted to.

And the combat was very action oriented, as dodging and movement are critical in combat. so there's no "sit in combat and hit a sequence of keystrokes over and over till the bad guy is dead," like in some games.

All in all, i liked it, and it is extremely solo friendly. It just never really had much of a population, and i never did find a group to play with. Your mileage may vary, however. And it's been a while since i played, so it may even be F2P now.

Casual: Guild Wars 2

Hardcore: Dungeons and Dragons Online ( but I have not played that in over 2 years ymmv ).

AION...its f2p and gorgeous...and has world pvp with fortresses and player housing..the best armor reskinning ever seen, great auction house and its coming out with expansion 4.0 that adds new zones etc....this game never gets mentioned in threads like this and I truly believe its one of the most underrated mmo's out there

the downsides is the rng on socketing/enchanting gear...top gear you can put 6 stones in to socket/upgrade your gear...problem is, if you fail on ANY stone, all the rest break and you have to start over..there's more ragequit from that one shitty mechanic i've ever seen.....other than that, its a really good f2p game and you NEVER have to buy anything from the cash shop

I stopped playing a long time ago due to boredom/rng crap I just described

GW2 has different worlds, but it blurs the lines compared to several other MMOs that do as well. For example its quite easy to play with people from other servers (and can even change which one youre based out of) with the guest mechanic and the market is the same across all servers so you can list an item for sale on server x and a person on server y can purchase it.

EverQuest, Project 1999. Free (no monthly fee), and old-school just like it was back then. I have come to the conclusion that today's MMO's are made for kids and/or retards.

Thanks! Just loaded Love me some vanilla where it wasn't lowest common denominator-craft

Enjoy :). I don't really have the time to give the game to raid or anything, but it's been fun so far. If you do end up raiding, BWL has been released and AQ40 is coming at the end of the year.

I recommend you just avoid the genre. But then I'm in WoW detox. I've been clean for almost three months now. :p

In their video on their main page, it says "rescripted dungeons." Did they actually change encounters in the raids? If they did, I might actually check it out. If not, I could literally do all of the bosses in Vanilla in my sleep, so it's probably not worth my time.

I think the "rescripting" refers to the fact that they made the encounters play out exactly as they did in vanilla. That's not always the case on private servers.

Lord of the Rings Online (LotRO) is still a great MMO that's free.

Defiance is f2p after you buy the game. No monthly fee. It's based on the SyFy show.

Rift surprised me by how fun it was during the leveling process. If you ever get bothered by the traditional leveling route of questing or doing dungeons you can run all around the map closing rifts down (think open-world instances with objectives). Having a lot of freedom in how you build your class was also fun because it presents you with a lot of abilities from the get-go and doesn't make combat early on too boring.
