For much of the same reasons that companies drop celebrity endorsements when people say or do stupid things?

You can downplay it as much as you want but the gaming industry IS mainstream entertainment now and I doubt they want any publicity from whatever negative connotations are associated with his words no matter how petty it is.
 
For those who see this as something inappropriate to say, what would you have said instead?

I was suggesting that about 99.9% of the population has given into the whole Polictical Correctness (PC) movement and is therefore afraid of saying anything that might offend anybody, even if it is true.

I don't see how this situation in any way has anything to do with rape. Unfortunately in the last year there have been some incredibly stupid, high profile things said about women, sex and rape and I bet a couple of years ago this particular incident wouldn't have been a big deal.
 
Things really do tend to escalate at Microsoft press conferences. Even when Ballmer isn't there.

I'm 40. If she had said the same thing to the guy she deserved a foot in her ass and a facepalm from the audience watching it. Like I said it was a very public event from a respected corporation trying to sell it's products. It didn't seem like something that they would want to be saying in public. If I were the CEO of MS I'd be upset at the unwanted press.

Like I said times have changed and taboo terms are easy to toss around in ordinary speech now. I had a 15 year old Jewish kidin our gaming clan talking about beating N's from Haiti. This same kid is banned from every good Battlefield server for making masturbation, rape, and racist jokes. Got to the point where we had to let him pick the server to see if he's banned. We kicked him out after giving him multiple chances to reform. He still thinks it was in good fun because it's not like he's going to do it in real life.

I should get him to send lilbabycat a Steam friend request. They would fit well together.
 
Putting the entire conversation and situation into context, she knew shortly after starting the game her character's ass was going to get kicked due to her opponents faster reactions times compared with hers coupled with the hardware controller he was using. I see nothing about the phrase in this situation that would be associated with the word "rape".

I wonder if Jonathon_Blow has spent time in prison? Maybe that is why he is sensitive to it...

Reading it as a "rape joke" is purely up to the reader. It could just easily mean "You aren't going to like what I'm about to do to you, so just relax, let it happen, and it'll be over soon".

People need to stop with this politically correct getting offended by every fucking thing that gets said just because they want to interpret it as being offensive. The last thing we need is to reach the point where we can't talk about shit because we might offend some delicate flowers and have to worry about how any thing we say could be interpreted by ANY group that might be offended by it.
 
Pretty bad remark, but probably unintentional. I reckon the guy probably thought "oh shit, I just said that..." soon after.
 
When I read it in text, it was pretty obvious to me it was a rape inference. When I actually heard the guy say it, it didn't seem that offensive. Kinda weird. Either way, this is blown out of proportion, and I regret that i spent 20+ minutes of my life reading the replies when I could of been doing something better. I would highly suggest that the whiners spend a month living in Darfur or any Impoverished or War-torn Nation and see if they still give a shit about what some idiot says at an E3 presentation when they get back. The Internet... it consumes all.

He never actually said the word "rape" so I don't see how this is relevant.

Personally, I think it was in poor taste but it's probably not anything to go too crazy over. I can see how it *could* be interpreted differently, but let's be real...like 90% of the time it's connotative to rape.
