Dayz Standalone

What "stink", man? Who's "grabbing pitcforks" here?

No one is "freaking out" or "bashing" anything, just giving feedback based on facts, reasonable opinions and the rest has been suggestions. No one needs to "relax", because no one is all "up-in-arms" about anything.

It's statements like this that are the epitome of hyperbole, deliberately exaggerating and misinterpreting, and completely unnecessary.

I'd be willing to bet he just skimmed the thread.

The ONLY conclusion I am drawing is based on what has been released.
Which isn't enough to say whether the interface has changed or not. You said there was a screenshot released that shows it doesn't look any different, which is fine, but we don't know what the other changes are, if there are any. The types of changes I asked about. A GUI is a combination of form and functionality, and though there's (allegedly) no change in form, there's no real concrete information about functionality. Yet you're saying nothing's changed.

So, yeah, conclusions are being drawn based on an absence of information. I'm the first guy in line to be critical of Rocket, but there just isn't anything here.

That's the problem though. Rocket has touted on and on about changes to the interface... the UI, inventory etc but has shown nothing except for the main menu for choosing servers, your character, visual settings etc.

That actually looked decent from what was shown, but why is he not showing the rest? Instead, focusing on inconsequential things, such as clothes. Doesn't make sense.

Such changes have been, according to him, a few of the biggest focuses he's had, and last I checked, I've not seen an outcry or clamoring for a nice pair of crotch-buldging running shorts, lol.

But, you know... we all know how important fashion is in DayZ. It's important to look slick, sleek and sexy when your randomly trip over a bush and both your femurs go bursting out of your body.

Let me be clear. Regardless of what goes on in the back end, the GUI for the inventory system is crucial to the core functionality of the game. That is my only point.

Lol nail on the head again. Excellent.

;)

Well, you know... it could be helpful to have those sexy, nut-crushing running shorts on when escaping zombies who run at a realistic 800 miles per hour, twitching like they're hopped-up on meth.

Because none of that needs fixing, so why showcase it? It's all just part of DayZ's charm.

Dunno. He figured that people would be excited about it, maybe. It's also one of the largest changes they've claimed to have made, so it's probably something worth demonstrating.

But, you know... we all know how important fashion is in DayZ. It's important to look slick, sleek and sexy when your randomly trip over a bush and both your femurs go bursting out of your body.
Looking different from other players, and having that be consistent each time you play (as opposed to clothing colors being randomized each time), could be important, though. If you've ever met up with people and needed to know what they look like, the best you can do in DayZ is to say that you're carrying a certain type of weapon or that you're wearing a ghillie or something. Then there's the inevitable 'spin around in circles so I know it's you I'm looking at' routine. Actually looking identifiably different from other players should be helpful.

One I don't disagree with.

No, I completely agree with you one that one, definitely... but that wasn't really my point.

New clothing is fine, it's just not really that big a deal that we waited all this time, with all the promises made of what's supposedly being done, and the majority of what we saw was some guy on the catwalk, showing off his new spiffy jogging suit...

...oh yeah, and cans of beans that now spawn under chairs because, you know, that's a massive technical achievement and advancement in the world of gaming that will "greatly add to the immersion", lol.

All this talk about oh its going to be amazing because it is a complete re work and engine re write...

After watching that video I am disappointed. Not to mention the one and only super crappy game mechanic that absolutely needed fixing was the zombies... which that video showed nothing of...

And can they just come up with some non arma 2 maps? I mean come on you talk it up as all fresh, and it just looks like new skins and artwork.

The mechanics and physics look the same, even the "open" action on the gate looked terrible for a interface. I would like to actually see something fresh considering all the talk Rocket has done about this game.

And now you know what it is like when looking forward to a new ArmA game. :)

BIS games have a lot of scope, but fail on implementation, the small details and polish. I would rather have them narrow down the game, bring some stuff up to par, and then slowly add in new stuff rather than making a bunch of half functional features/content.

ArmA 3 seems to be making more improvements, though the more I see of it the more I see things that have been present since ArmA 1/OFP that need to go. Day Z standalone, which is essentially the mod polished up, will likely have the same results.

There just isn't all that much to show. I don't think it's a bad thing, because most of my gripes about the mod are fairly minor, but how do you go about showing what an improvement the client/server architecture is in a video? That's probably the single largest change to the game from an internals perspective, but it's not something that you can demonstrate in any way that's even remotely interesting. The crafting system may not be baked enough to show, and I think Rocket may have even said as much recently. A bug-fix show-off video wouldn't be very captivating to watch either.

Probably the right thing to do would've been a montage video that could've been thrown together by BIS marketing, but I get the impression he just wanted to throw out a quick "here's what we're working on"-type video. I don't think it's worth sweating over.

Now don't get me wrong, I love BIS and the ArmA series, been playing since OFP, but yeah, you have a point. They need to go back to the drawing board, IMO, rather than just half-assedly porting VBS over to a game format.

ArmA 3 is looking good, but it's not leaps and bounds better than ArmA 2 OA in a lot of ways. I also understand that given the scope of the project it is hard to include everything, but there are a lot of issues like AI bugs and no proper dynamic shadowing on static objects that really detracts from how amazing the game could be. Then again, it's likely that no computer would be able to run it with all the improvements people want to the graphics and AI.

Exactly my point. For example, they announced multiple sight systems in ArmA 2. Nice! Though, the transition between the sights are horrible. It instantly swaps between them, switching between them shows the really bad LOD system, frame rates drop, switches from 2D to 3D sights, ect. In short, it feels very poorly done.

Compare that to how Infiltration (1999 mod) had smoothly animated transitions, and how Red Orchestra 2 did it as well and it makes ArmA 2/3 sight transitioning feel terrible and clunky.

Apply this to almost everywhere else in the series. It has its good points, but they do miss the mark. And I am sure this will happen with Day Z (still using the older ArmA 2 engine), as it did with ArmA, Carrier Command, ect. They do make nice games, but one can hope they can work on the polishing and bug fixing department in future titles.

No, but something such as zombie animations/models would be, some of the new interfaces etc. You cant tell me at this point there's not that much to show, given the standalone is already past it's release point, but is coming soon.

Again, who's "sweating"? I'm not, though if I was, at least I'd have a new sweatsuit to soak it up, lol. Maybe a fancy headband to go with my new sweatsuit. I'll stand in the middle of Chernarus and dance for all the snipers.

But, seriously, one huge thing I hope they implement as well is a change in speed regarding the zombies. Even if that means slowing player speed a little to compensate. Or, best yet, slow everything down a little and just add more zombies, which would make it more of a challenge and add to both the atmosphere and gameplay mechanics and strategy.

I feel more is better than faster. I just cant get into the vibe anymore with zombies that run fast enough to keep up with my Hemi Cuda. If they keep this up, instead of "horsepower", car manufacturers can start basing engine output in "zombiepower" as DayZ spreads further out into the world.

"Yes sir, there's a solid 450ZP under the hood of this sporty beast".

I just wish Day Z had the kind of zombies that were in Left 4 Dead, Dead Rising, the upcoming State of Decay.

the ones currently in the game I wouldn't even classify as "Zombies"

Will still be getting this when it comes out though.

Im excited as this should keep lots of the hackers and retards that flooded dayZ out of the other ARMA mods.

Am I excited? Yup. However I had to let the idea of waiting and 'Its really close' set sail. I have had to switch server types and maps to keep it from getting stale. Still excited, just a little more laid back now. +1 to Rocket for the mod and undertaking, but I think he is a little too arrogant about stuff.

Yeah, you mean zombies that actually look more "realistic"... that's a big thing for me as well. I believe they're re-skinning the zombies and that was supposedly a big focus, so hopefully they follow-through on that.

+1 to that... the guy seems like a competent coder (though some would debate that) but he's a little to high on himself, like he's the next John Carmack. When he builds an entire zombie survival horror game from the ground-up, then I'll be actually impressed.

I'll be nailing the standalone, but I hope he starts pulling out all the stops, and really expands the mod in both atmosphere, visuals and functionality.

A youtube video interview I remember watching they were discussing whether to build the game all out complete or releasing playable and somewhat finished and then add things and content regularly via updates/patches as they went along. I wonder if he ever decided which way to go?

Been wondering that myself, since there's still been no release date or even a time frame given at this point that seems definitive.

I'm not sure which I'd prefer, honestly. I just want to see what he can, or is willing, to really do to turn the mod into something more outstanding.

I still think he should take all those "skillz" and work on something from scratch, implementing the same mechanics, and having the freedom, without being strangled trying to work with a pre-existing engine/design, to create something that really blows the zombie survival horror genre wide open.

Where have you gotten the impression that Rocket is arrogant about his abilities? I've tracked things fairly closely and have not gotten that impression about it.

Well, if you've played the game long enough, and have spent much time on the site, reading blogs, vids from way back to now etc, he's been known to come-off in such a manner. He just has that "air" about him; fine line between confidence and arrogance.

He's seemed to tone that down in recent times. Either way, I truly don't care. He could run down the street naked smeared in green jello screaming, "I'm the Lord God Almighty and demand a sacrifice of all your butter and cheese!" for all I give a shit, as long as he seriously improves DayZ and turns it into something greater than what it's been.

Having played the current version out now (or at least the version out in January.) I can say the game has a LOT of potential but they need to work on some things. What I disliked about it were the following;

1. Controls and movement. This needs to be improved a lot. Specifically when in tight places, you should be able to move about freely and your character should have the animations and whatever else to position itself like you would in real life. Such as crawling up stairs or turning around in a tight space while prone. I've vaulted over a fallen tower before and suddenly broke a bone in the process with nothing what-so-ever going on. I've also bumped into a friend walking in/out of buildings to have one of us break a bone for no apparent reason. When you die. Getting back into the server should not be rocket science. Granted I didn't really die all that often, so I never really cared but when you do die and you will die, its a PITA to get back in.

2. The inventory system. This is the biggest problem I found with this game. If you aren't careful, you could lose valuable items without even knowing it simply because you wasn't aware that when you picked up that can of sardines, you lost a blood fusion pack.

3. The graphics settings. They are entirely too complicated. It took me hours upon hours to tweak the settings so that it didn't look all blurry/washed out looking. Or if I was to sweep left or right, you got this sideways tunnel vision thing going on where you can't tell what you're looking at unless you stop moving. My i7 870 w/ 470 GTX should play this game fine at least at medium settings and it not look all washed out/blurry.

If they can fix those, especially the inventory system, it will be a damn good damn.

M33 sums it up nicely.

This and Arma 3 are about the only games I am excited about. Wish they would hurry up with a release date.

Maybe I haven't been looking in the right place, but I haven't heard ANYTHING about the DayZ standalone in months.

Thanks for the links...still not a ton of info. I mostly hang out around the BIS forums and I haven't seen a whole lot (there's no DayZ subforum anyway).

News conference struff was terrible. Enough talk, how about a release date or some real footage.

Just about to lose complete interest in this. It may be a case of a day late and a dollar short for this stand alone over all. It will have its core buyers no doubt, but even WarZ had its core buyers...

Please, you mean to tell me when this game goes alpha for like, 10 dollars or whatever the charge is going to be that you're not going to buy it?

Doesn't matter if it comes out tomorrow or next year, everyone who has played DayZ will remember the fun they had and buy it.

The hypetrain left the station a year ago, it doesn't need hype to be successful, it just needs to come out usable and at a price point that literally everyone who has played DayZ will go "hell yeah i'm buying this, I remember having fun with the mod!" Which is probably around 20 dollars or less for the Alpha build. It's been stated before that DayZ SA will use a similar charging mechanism as Minecraft, cheap for the alpha and progressively more expensive as development continues.

What are the odds the standalone comes out this year? I'd honestly bet against any earlier than next Christmas.

I have to urge people to have patience with Stand Alone. I want to play it NOW as well, but that isn't realistic. If you look at the dev videos, and what they have been adding, stand alone is going to do something no other game has. Just look at the early crafting/inventory system. Even in its early stages it is the most advanced system we have had in this type of game. The health system is adding complexity as well. I was really getting impatient as well until I saw the videos from GDC, and the early stages of what they have in store for us.

Noticed:

similar (but more simple) to the popular ACARS radio mod for ArmA2

The fuck is ACARS? I assume he means ACRE but it might be nice to know what you're talking about before saying it, lol.

I think its cool he's climbing Mt Everest. Live your dream! :D

Now everyone over on the BIS forums is like "Why the fuck does DayZ get ACRE-like features and ArmA 3 doesn't?"

Good question.
