Close Call With An Exploding iPhone Battery

Isn't that a gas of some sort that the battery produces when it fails, gets too hot, or sits around without a charge for a while? o_O

I wouldn't want that to go "pop" in my pants.

It's a feature guys! Instead of waiting for you to drop the phone and breaking apart, it does it itself.

Heh Take it to Apple store. Watch them freak and give you anything you wanted just to take it out of the store.

I'm sure Apple has already file a patent for this so they can sue anyone else who's battery fails like this.

guys that's your the airbag system that goes off when it drops a centimeter from your hand :D

Holding it wrong causing the internal airbag system to deploy as a safe guard against hand damage.

The exact same thing happened to my friend's 3gs. The battery pack bulged so much that it bend the circuit board. It's definitely not air inside, when we tried squeezing the battery it was rock solid. Apple asked for £100 to get it fixed plus new battery fitted. My friend walked. But to be fair his 3gs is almost 3 years old, which is way past the warranty period.

When you sell 2 billion of something..or whatever..sometimes something goes out of wack.
I've seen this faked before though..

The battery in my old Samsung Galaxy S started to bulge like this as well. I ended up having to open the back cover to replace the bad battery with a spare battery I had lying around ;)

Its funny to see this happen, creeps me out, reminds me of when my sisters razr exploded in her car.

I cant wait till we move off lithium based batteries to graphene super capacitors...

3.7v is lithium polymer. Most the stuff being produced today is Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4), which is a lot safer.

Lithium battery are safe if you don't discharge them at higher than their rating, or charge them at higher than their rating.

They are a HUGE jump in safety and durability from similar output lead-acid, NiCad, or NiMh.

But ... anything that stores a lot of power is dangerous.

If the battery had actually exploded we wouldn't be seeing those pics.

I h ad the same problem with mu Hp5555 battery it started getting bigger and fatter for months after years of use it started doing that.

I gave it to to some guys at the firestation I know because It was a fire hazard I was not sure what it was going to do explode or burst into flames.

just for posterity' sake & as a curiosity piece, that should placed in some kind of PC tech museum somewhere

Batteries fail, no surprise. Though this is exactly why I will never own a phone that I can't easily replace the battery. I remember when the new razr came out. Chick at Verizon was trying to convince me that the battery would never fail or lose capacity. I laughed in her face, called her a dumbass and walked out.

Wait, so if I just leave my old iPhone around it will explode?

I don't think that would happen. I've left a small pile of obsolete Blackberries in a cabinet at my office and the batteries seem to swell, but don't explode. I'm guessing they're made so they can tolerate a certain amount of neglect without becoming dangerously explosive. There's probably some sort of liability cost to be avoided by battery producers.

Looks like my creamy mac n cheese pack. Just open it up, and spread it around on your macaroni!

:D beautiful.

Now if lg and HTC would get it out of their fucking heads that people all the sudden want integrated batteries again.

Where are all the [H]ers who would always try to shout me down when I'd argue this as a reason for never wanting to user serviceable battery?

Especially in a $2000 laptop?

What happens when you puncture a lipo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6M5ftkN9PtY

Guy has fast reflexes i'll give him that

And this video...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&feature=fvwp&v=LxRIfe_BQeA

Shows that even when the battery is completely drained/appears to be dead... it's still capable of holding enough of a charge to burn.

Between these two videos, it seems especially idiotic that Apple's policy to repair battery warranty claims when there wasn't an Apple store nearby...

Was to have you mail it to them. Even if bloated.

Which was, and still is, illegal, by the way.

This is why you should never, ever buy a product without user serviceable batteries.
