I reinstalled windows started on my dell mini i thought i could read the key but apparently it was wrong so now i have no idea what to do.

I called dell and they told me to just buy a new key.

recovery partition doesn't work if you formated / deleted the original partition, at least in some dell systems it doesnt

Usually you have to remove\replace partitions to get the recovery partition.

Moral of the story: Avoid brand junk that are too cheap to provide you with an install media.

Is it an old machine or something? I called Dell and said I had to reinstall due to virus but I didn't have the OS because the virus ate the recovery partition. They sent out 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7 thumb drives at no charge - overnighted to me actually. I love Dell.

Thats true. Dell has their own OEM disks where you don't have to enter any serials. I believe they only check for Dell code in the bios.

I have 2 E6400 ATG and one E6410 ATG that got replaced at work and HD was taken out for security, so I needed to get new ones. They do have a windows serial sticker underneath, but I only had to use a Dell OS disk "already installed on your computer" and no need to enter a serial on either of the machines.

Daz Loader can install Dell's certificates I think.

In either case, it can activate Win7. I guess that's the OS we talk about.

I can only say this: I recently got a Lenovo T530. When I tried to create the recovery media from the "special" Lenovo partition, I got the same error on two different burn operations. So I called Lenovo and three days later, I had a copy of the media, no cost, courtesy of Lenovo.

Moral of the story: Not all vendors are created equal.
