Got scratches on your new iPhone 5? Phil Schiller says that's normal. As much as we like to tease Apple, that statement is actually true. Besides, no one made you buy that phone, so ultimately...it is your fault. Duh. :D

Hah! And they say the spirit of Steve Jobs is gone. That was a "you're holding wrong" statement if I ever read one. ;) .

I need a glass panel to protect the back of my iPhone 5... then a bumper to protect my glass panel. THEN I'll be good...

Alex's reply: *Darth Vader* NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

"You're scratching it wrong."

Why do people complain so much about plastic anyways? I've had plastic android phones, where the only time they ever received a nick was went it dropped onto asphault. I'll admit it was a Motorola Cliq and it was a shitty phone, but it rarely got any damage on it.

Apparently the coating on top of the anodized aluminum is really cheap and as a result many of these iPhones are shipping already scratched from the factory.

It's a "feature."

Apple's corporate model is based on pandering to every superfluous concern that irritates the banal consumer.

not as durable (as metal) and feels cheap.

It can be as durable as metal. Plastic has a quality known as elasticity, where it can deform and return to its natural shape. Metal doesn't do that. Metal will either chip or dent.

Plastic can be just as, if not more durable, if used in the right manner. Metal with coatings scratches very easily and the flaws make it look to be in much worse shape than if you had a plastic phone that is one colour all the way through. It can scratch, sure, but you just see the same colour and it doesn't show up as much. The back of my white S3 has all kinds of little scratches on it but you have to tilt it the right way against the light to see them. If it was aluminum with a coating they'd be visible all the time.

Granted, metal is usually more rigid so holds its shape better under load. Probably why the iPhone5 looks to be suffering drop tests with more success. You sacrifice one type of durability for another, basically. Plastics suffer scratches and dents better but don't do as well in drop tests. Metal lasts longer under abuse but shows its scratches much more quickly.

My OG Droid has only a few chips in the black coating after almost 3 years of abuse...the magical iPhone can't even make it through shipping!

I don't give a shit if the metal gets scratches on it. Isn't that the point of the metal part -- to protect the rest of the phone?

If I bought an iPhone 5 (which I would never do) I'd just put a thin film screen protector across the back.

I'm not that vain that I care about keeping my phone looking perfectly, but I might want to sell it when I'm done with it.

Scratches........hell, what about the fucking fingerprints?

Apple should provide polishing cloths........or white gloves.

Having worked with anodized aluminum on paintball guns, I knew right away that the slate iPhone 5 was going to have problems. Unless you use an industrial process to anodize aluminum (which is typically flat and ugly), it's susceptible to scratches, wear and fading. Anodized aluminum is very beautiful, but it's not very durable compared to the other coatings.

It's kind of funny though.

Apple places so much emphasis on their products being pretty, but completely fail to consider what they will look like with typical use.

Who cares if your phone is pretty if you need to keep it under a glass case for its entire life in order to keep it that way? :p

I hate Apple just as much as any sane person would, but an induced scratch is going to create.... a scratch.

Take this cat here and allow him to scratch something. I will assure you it will scratch.

Apparently you've never heard of springs, or realized the frame of your car is flexing all the time.

Apple is such an easy target. There is always an underlying tendency for me to identify it with Stalinist Russia.

I don't think they really care what happens after they get their money.

Romney thinks you should be able to "roll the windows down" on a pressurized aircraft at 30,000 in case you need oxygen, I don't see this complaint to be any less valid. :D

Classic Apple End User question.... "ummm I scratched my phone will you replace it?"

Yep that type of intelligence is why you buy apple.

I like how he asks "what should we all do?" and bothers asking if apple plans on fixing this issue. Apparently scratches are a new feature to apple products?

If I worked for Apple right now, I'd totally pitch an automatic iPhone metal sanding machine for diehard fans to bring their phones "back to spec." Oh, and it would be a VERY expensive status symbol. ;)

Sounds liek either a poorly chosen grade of aluminum, or a class 1 anno job, or both. I dont see them going class 3.

Chipping? It shouldnt, not unless you hit it really hard.
