I'm wondering if its possible to turn on a PC wirelessly, similar to a PS3 via bluetooth controller (w/o a cord)? I dont mean from sleep I mean from a dead start. Can a board with integrated BT do this using BT devices such as PS3 controller or keyboard? That, or something similar like Wake on WLAN? Would the board require integrated WLAN for that to work, and do any of Intel's mATX boards have WoWLAN?

I'd also like to use my smartphone to access and control my PC from anywhere via RDC app (remote desktop connect). Is it possible to use my phone to turn the PC on/off, if so how? What would it need integrated in the mobo (WLAN, BT, WiFi, 3g)? What I understand is BT dongles and wireless PCIe cards cant turn the PC on since both need power from the mobo, requiring PC to be at least sleeping. But if they're integrated wouldn't they'd have constant power even w/ the PC off?

If someone has a solution I'd very much appreciate it :)...

I don't know if this info will be helpful, but back in the day I used to own a Dvico PCI TV Tuner Card that had an IR remote sensor, IR remote, and optional power tails so that you could tie it into the motherboards power switch sensor, allowing you to turn the computer on/off via the remote. I'm not aware of another solution off the top of my head, but maybe this will help point you in the right direction.

I read something about that a while back but forgot, thanks for reminding me. I had planned to use the Ceton InfiniTV 4 but I don't think it has an IR sensor. Do you know of a tuner off the top of your head that records 4 channels and features an IR sensor? Ideally I'd like to use my phone, so I can turn on the PC to rec tv while I'm at work etc and then turn it off when its done.
 
That's a bit out of my league. I switched over to just a basic MCE remote with USB IR sensor because I don't record anymore on my computer. I'm sure when my free On Demand promo expires I will look into doing it again, but in the meantime I will ask some of my friends and see if they know of anything.
 
If you use a board with a built-in CIR header (like most Intel motherboards) you can do this with simple IR commands.
 
I believe Asus boards allow themselves to be turned on by bluetooth, but you would need a ROG board.

This is my first build so excuse my arrogance lol. Does CIR allow the PC to be turned on from a dead start, unlike a USB type receiver that can only wake from sleep? So what are headers and how/where do you connect to them? Can the sensor work from behind the case, or better yet from inside?
 
I couldn't find anything for androids, but I found a blog about an app called iWake for iPhone. I guess it can wake your PC from anywhere in the world using WOL, you just need to forward ports on your router to allow your PC to communicate on something called UDP port 9 to the broadcast IP address, so the mobo can receive the wake up "magic packets".

I've never messed with a router configurations or ports so its over my head atm and I'm a lil skeptical. Is there any security risks I should be aware of? Also can a PC thats connected wirlessly still receive the packets, Is this called WoWLAN and works the same as WoL? Does the mobo require a integrated wireless card for WoWLAN or will a wireless PCI card work too?

ROG stands for Republic of Gamers, and is Asus's top of the line gaming hardware. On the motherboard side, they receive the names Crosshair (AMD), Maximus (Intel mainstream), and Rampage (Intel enthusiast).

ROG boards have a host of extra features, one of which is ROG bluetooth connect. This allows you to control motherboard functions using a bluetooth enabled smartphone. It can do everything from monitoring temps to overclocking on the fly.

Yes, from a dead start.

The CIR headers are pins on the motherboard.

You connect an intel-approved CIR device to the headers.

The sensor goes wherever you can point an IR remote.

Is it just phones or can any BT device wake it up? I did search ROG mobo's and just got a page listing all the extra features, but nothing specific to onboard BT w/ waking capabilities. I didn't see much for ROG in mATX either.

Is that the one and only? Will it work inside the case from 8'-12' away? Most IR remotes are sensitive to obstruction and line of sight but maybe they've improved. I dont wana drill holes in the case is all, but if it would work inside (double sided tape) then I'd consider.

Also can it work with any programmable remote? Cuz I'd like something with cursor control, but maybe IR is too laggy. That is if OBBT MOBO's can be powered on by any BT device.

Hmm, yeah, you're right, it does say nothing about it. So it probably can't.

Also, the boards labeled Gene are your mATX boards.

It may be possible to do something called wake up by LAN, but that would require your computer to be plugged in by ethernet. And I'm not sure how to set it up, or that it's possible.

Your not being sarcastic are you lol? Cuz maybe I was looking at the wrong page or read it wrong :\. Idk why "wake by BT" isn't standard for mATX/ITX considering most HTPC cases dont have IR receivers. I really think BT should be the new standard for everything really, it has WAY more range and isn't effected by obstruction or LOS.

Maybe you missed my post w/ the link to the blog for the iWake app? It explains how once you configure your router so your computer wakes on LAN (WOL), it can then wake from anywhere in the world. I think its possible for wireless PCs if the mobo features wake on WLAN (WoWLAN). I just dont know if thats offered for mATX boards.

I think you misread my post. I was saying you probably can't wake up a computer by bluetooth, even if it's a ROG motherboard. And then I was saying the mATX ROG motherboard variants are labeled with the word "Gene." For example, Maximus V Gene, Rampage IV Gene, etc.

And you're wrong. They both use the same frequency, so they have the same limitations as far as range and obstructions go. Obstruction/range is frequency dependent, and the WiFi standard has a higher bandwidth (can transport more data quicker) than bluetooth.

Wakeup on LAN should be possible for any motherboard with an ethernet (wired) connection. This is mostly because a motherboard will maintain a wired connection even when shut down. Wireless is a different story, as the wireless cards are usually turned off.

look on Ebay for a spare Asus Theater Gate remote and IR... my mini-itx board has one and it does this... very nice piece of extra hardware... you will need the software for it too but that can be had via the Asus website...

Bioremote from Biostar sorta does this thru WOL...

bluetooth doesn't really like working through walls, doors or desk either.


One thing to keep in mind for wake on lan is that is only works for a small amount of time. a computer has to be off less than 48 hours otherwise it won't be able to be woke up by it.
 
Magic Packet works. It's very simple to set up for your local network, waking it up from remote locations is more technical. What are you trying to accomplish?
 
very easily done with WOL. Now wireless, you configure a ddwrt router as a bridge and connect it to the lan. Now you can wake it on. I have my main file server in one room and an htpc in another and this is how I stream stuff without running an ugly wire through the hallway.
