TrueNAS vs OpenSolaris ZFS testing

Hey folks,
I have been given the task of putting TrueNAS and OpenSolaris head to head in a performance race. Before I start or get in to the nitty gritty, has anyone worked with TrueNAS before? I will be building two 336TB NAS's, two 30TB SAN's, and rebuilding two 130TB NAS. Each has dual quads, 128gb ram+, SSD's for log/cache and OS. I can't wait to start :). Everything is linked via 10GbaseT or 40GB Infiniband.

Did you buy your hardware from IXSystems? If not, how did you get a copy of TrueNAS?

Yea, same here. I quoted them out as well but they only offered it pre-built

My main concern with TrueNAS was:

- VMware certification
- ZFS Level (is TrueNAS on ver 28 yet?)
- Lack of info about TrueNAS out on the net (Plenty out there about FreeNAS tho)
 
...subscribed too. would love to see more ZFS based options out there. Interested to see how this test goes.
 
I'd love to see IXSystems sell TrueNAS decoupled from hardware, and take on Nexenta, which I've shared with the folks over there.

I guess they make enough money/margin on hardware that if they didn't bundle it with TrueNAS there isn't value to being just another SuperMicro reseller.

Yeah, makes sense. and i dont even think thats a bad thing, their pricing was really good for the bundled system when i checked them out. Just had concerns that i mentioned above which made me a little skittish.

It uses ver 28 that they backported to FreeBSD 8.x is my understanding. I've evaluated it too and keep sending them bugs and missing features. I'd LOVE to go with them (I buy a lot of Supermicro from them and they're awesome), but I'm afraid of being a guinea pig and I too need VMware certification so VMware doesn't tell me to pound sand when I call them. I think in 6 or 12 months it'll be a great product though if they continue working on it full tilt.
 
I work for one of IXsystems largest customers (if not the largest). We sell a system that includes a ZFS based 336tb file server. Due to several things, we are moving away from Nexanta. We really want a system we can package and have outside support for. IX has a team working on developing a faster (read-more performance oriented) release with Infiniband support for us. I currently have a beta copy and several test systems to put it on. I will try to see if our rep can answer some questions that you guys have. :)

Can you please elaborate, what are "Due to several things..moving away..."
 
Our main goal is to purchase a complete system from a single company. Comprising of hardware, OS, and support. To be honest I am just leaning more about our current config and from what I understand our software engineers would like to move more towards a freebsd based system which can more easily talk with our other servers. (Example, we want to utilize the cache on the NAS to precheck/load some files and they hit a wall attempting this with Nexanta.) We also fall under incredibly strict software auditing from our friends over at the government and if we push a product based off opensolaris, we are responsable for update cycles, ect. If we buy it as a packed piece, we are no longer responsible.

Fun stuff, right?

I pulled out one of our test boxes today. It is at least a Dual Quad 2.5 with 64gigs or more of ram, 48 1.5tb drives, and room for my cache/log SSD's. :)
 
Hit a wall with Nexenta? I suggest you post in the Nexenta forum, they are very keen to resolve all issues people are reporting. Especially if you are a big customer. If you contact them and report on the problem, what do they say?
 
I hope you have better luck communicatiing with IXsystems. We assumed that FreeNAS was based off of TrueNAS. So we installed FreeNAS and it seem to work well with our MS systems, but we couldn't copy (cp) files from our HP-UX systems, however only rsync seemed to work. Our contractor tried in vain to talk with someone, but to no avail, which will go into my report. Our clients/subscribers would rather purchase off the self package (as you were stating support,etc) than build their own, but when they see we didn't get any pre-sales support, I doubt they'll be buying anything from IXsystems.
