Firefox 8 will be ready for download on Monday, but if you are the impatient type, you can download the Release Candidate immediately. This is the fifth Firefox version released this year.

Not included in this version is the much anticipated silent upgrade feature in Firefox that will work similarly to the process Google is using with Chrome. Mozilla expects this feature to be available in Firefox 10.

Might as well wait for Firefox 28, which is coming out this Thursday....

Of course Javascript isn't working for more than FF 6.0, still, No I'm using Nightly v10.0a1.

Any real differences from firefox 4 yet, or are they just releasing for the sake of releasing?

Maybe they are trying to catch up with IE. Most people don't realize that the numbers don't matter so they naturally think the highest number is better. It could be a ploy to get these people to switch to Firefox.

This. That's part of the trick with the fast version incrementation, it makes people think that things are progressing faster than they actually are.

It's certainly making my life harder at work, bah! SCCM never works as well for third party software.

Oh this is just stupid. These are not WHOLE NEW versions, these are small changes. gah

I don't get why this isn't 5.4. That's basically all they have done with 6, and 7... etc... they are just small, almost unnoticed changes that do not condone a new version.

I LOVE firefox, been using it for a while for obvious reasons... but these new releases are getting annoying every month now. Its getting to the point where they are using Apple advertising tactics.... make some flashy and new, and all the tech blogs talk about it, hence giving you free advertising and more users potentially.

It's getting annoying though....

Yep.

In the end, at least they are making it easier to upgrade WITHOUT having to redownload all my daily-used privacy/block plugins that makes FF #1 IMHO.

It's more than just that.

- twitter search is included in the search box
- When firefox restores tabs from a previous session it can be set to load the active tab initially and others are reloaded when viewed.
- 3rd party add ons like toolbars won't load until you grant permission
- reduced memory usage
- improved html5 support

Among other things.

They should just jump the version number and be done it. This is crazy.

Chrome updates every 6 weeks everyone is like "yeah google is cool". Firefox does it they are the butt of every joke. Sad :(

The difference is that Chrome employs silent updates; so people don't notice.
I read the FF will include that method soon aswell.

Pretty much. What was the biggest change that justified a bump from 17 to 18 on chrome? They updated the javascript engine, added adjustable margins in Print Preview and added a prompt to finish downloads if you use incognito mode. Yet you don't hear anyone complain about that.

It will be in 10. It's just about ready to be tested in Nightly builds currently.

Ill check it out but I'm sure Ill end up back on IE9 after a little while. It just seems to work better with everything.

Finally reinstalled FF 3.6 now I get a web browser that just fucking works, doesn't change the interface every other week, doesn't cause plug-in incompatabilities, I'm looking at mother fucking webpages for fucks sake, why do we need advancements on the program that does that!

Yeah, they should've stopped updating browsers at IE7. It has all the webserfin technology we need!

I am using the nightly build of 64-bit Firefox(10a1 2011-11-05) and silent updates have not been implemented as of yet to my knowledge, but I haven't delved through the about:config in a while to see if there is an option for it yet.

What's different between 3.6 and 8? I don't mind an update if it incorporates new technology that isn't backwards compatible. But if its cosmetic changes, or they claim they "made things faster" so I shave a few nanoseconds off my clicking in between the minutes of reading?

I use Aurora 64bit. (9.0a2)
Its backwards compatible with all the extensions I use, and its fast as fuck.

I've been a hardcore firefox user for a long time, but this "minecraft-esque" style of releasing broken shit ever more often pushed me over the edge to Chrome. Tired of hangups, lockups, and massive CPU spikes.
