850W PSU Recommendations Please!

What is the difference between the Corsair 850 Silver and Gold? From the reviews on newegg, the silver seems to be the better card.

Reviews on newegg are posted by people who understand power supplies the way Sarah Palin understands quantum mechanics..

LOL, that is a well put analogy. So if I go for the Corsair AX850, make sure it’s the gold version.

It really depends on your needs, your system specs(no point in putting an AX850 in a mainstream system).. depending on your budget, there are better deals to be found than the AX units :)

any ax model is gold version its about the efficiency, from worse to better,80+,80bronze,80silver,80gold...
bronze is good enough, everything over that is phenomenal. It depends on component qualities and the ripple.

compared to my crappy dell 305 watt power supply, it's only up from there.

OEM power supplies are actually not all that crappy. They're still decent quality, and you can go lower, like Diablotek power supplies.

Maybe not crappy, but have always limited me on what video cards I could support. Buidling you own rigs is the opsoite as teh sky and $$$ are the limit.

So far so good with my AX850. My 6990 sure makes that joker HOT!

I hope that is normal for an 850 Watt PSU pushing a 6990 hot beast.

PSU fan controllers are designed to keep the internal temperature below a certain limit, usually around 50 C or so, I think. That's how they can stay silent, because the amount of air they have to move to keep it below 50 C vs the amount of air needed for below 40 or 35 C is much lower.
