Short story i purchased a zalman 8000a for core i7 950. My temps are brutal at 55c idle, up to 90c load. Stock cooler is warmer than that. I have reseated 2 times now. I want to replace and my nearest store has a Noctua-NH-C12P-SE14-CPU-Cooler or the corsair h 50, 60, and 70. I want to oc to 4ghz with stable temps. Which cooler should i choose fellow [H]'s? Using thermaltake soprano case. Appreciate all feedback.

out of all those I would choose the H70 hands down,it should keep your temps nice, not sure if it would fit the case, but if it will, that's your best bet.

H50 in push/pull with good fans will run circles around the H70. Same story with the H60.

What are your ambient temps? What are your settings?

blck at 144
core voltage at 1.25v
ambient is around ~27c
from what i can tell, the rad can fit fine. confirmed noctua is compatible with board. so h70 or h50...anyone that has used either or both can say one is better than the other?

What case do you have?
How is airflow through the case?
Are your cables nice and tidy or are they a huge mess?
Is your computer stuck in some sort of cubby?

Case is thermaltake soprano. airflow is decent, 120mm sucking air in front, 120mm in the back venting out and a 90mm side fan venting out. i added 2 fans thinking airflow was no good but maybe dropped temps by 1-2c. The cables arent as tidy as some of the rigs ive seen here but its by no means a mess. computer is under my table and out in open. ive attached pics.http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/191/img2ot.jpg/ http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/535/img1sh.jpg/

And that heatsink in the pic is the Zalman one? No wonder it is running that hot.

Definitely get a better cooler. If you get the H50 or similiar, you will probably want to cut out the reaer fan grill on the case as well.. otherwise it is going to severely cut down on the air flow going through the radiator.

I think the side fan should be reversed. It should move air in, not out. If it is set up to move air out, then it is sucking air away from the cpu area.
Or is it possible you misunderstood which way it is moving air? Newegg pictures show it moving air into the case, not out.

I did try reversing the side fan to blow air into the case. it didn't seem to make a difference. the only fan i havent tried swapping around is the fan in front bringing air in.

Update after talking to the shop the corsairs arent fitting the case without modding it. So went with the noctua. Its a beast and temps dropped to 45c idle and 69c load. Slight oc at 3.4ghz. Tried raising blck up to 166 and intel burn test bsods after 2nd pass. Raised cpu voltage up to 1.29 and still bsod. Also tried multi at 20 and blck 200. This bsod after 1st pass. Backed down to blck 144 cpu voltage 1.25 and im stable again

Why do INTEL chips run hotter than AMD??? Not talking ahit, just want to know. Is it higher voltage or because awesomeness runs HOT!!!??

What type of thermal grease are you using?

Started with as5 on stock cooler and zalman. After reseating zalman 2nd time i used their thermal grease. With noctua i am also using their supplied grease. I understand it has to cure so i am expecting/hoping temps to drop some more. The as5 i have is about 4 years old..can it go bad?

Did you lower your RAM multiplier when trying to overclock in order to keep the RAM around 1600?

You will probably have to play with other voltages besides just the CPU voltage as well.

Make sure all of the voltages are set manually. If you leave them on AUTO, some things will most likely be severely over volted.

What voltages have you set to achieve your 4.2ghz oc? i would be fine with just getting to 4 or turbo boosting up to 4ghz.

Well achieved 4ghz. 191x21 1.29 core voltage. Been playing with HT on and off and off i have 1-2c drop in temps. idling 46c, load 68c. not sure if this affected my oc and temps but i set uncore voltage to 1.5 instead of the memory voltage. thanks for all assistance!
