sandy bridge-e delayed

That sucks monkey nuts. And not the good kind of monkey nut sucking. hehe

I was just posting this, you win.

Originally slated for Q4 2011, the launch of Intel's Sandy Bridge-E desktop/workstation platform has been pushed back to Q1 2012, sources told VR-Zone. The high-end platform was expected by industry observers to be a December launch, targeting the shopping season, but it seems like January 2012 is found to be more fitting. Perhaps the International CES, where the latest and greatest from the tech industry is unveiled, serves as the ideal launch-pad for Sandy Bridge-E.

Sandy Bridge-E is an upscale of the architecture that makes up Intel's 2011 Core processor family. Consisting of 4 or 6 cores, Sandy Bridge makes up two distinct product lines for the client desktop market. The chips pack massive quad-channel DDR3 integrated memory controllers and PCI-Express 3.0 hubs that can drive up to four graphics cards. The processor is made of a new 2011-pin LGA package, with the new Intel X79 chipset handling the rest of the platform.

Here's the last roadmap showing how it would've apparently of gone without delays.

Annoying really because it would have tied in really nicely for me upgrading, had it all planned for October-ish... *waves angry fist*. I can wait i suppose :)

I see they bumped speed of 4C SB-E IIRC it was at same levels as 2600K. Also no more 8 core SB-E ?

In 2-3 weeks we'll see how accurate the rumor is at the investor conference call for last quarter's results. :p

I wish people would remember how (in)accurate sources can be and use that judgement when evaluating new rumors from same sources. ;)

That sucks...

Maybe they don't feel threatened by Bulldozer?

Also, why don't they just skip it and go with Ivy Bridge?

When did they say there was going to be an 8-core Sandy Bridge-E? News to me. Possibly for Ivy Bridge later on.

Sandy Bridge-E is the High Performance and Enthusiast replacement for LGA1366.

Mainstream / Performance: 1156 --> 1155 Current Sandy Bridge --> Ivy Bridge (Early 2012)
Performance / Enthusiast: 1366 --> 2011 Sandy Bridge-E --> Ivy Bridge (most probably extreme editions, larger cache and clock speeds (possibly mid - late 2012))

nobody is disputing that fact (clearly since its on the roadmaps that way), but hes asking why would they bother using sandy bridge when the ivy bridge architecture is around the corner.

I think the answer is pretty clear though that the enthusiast platforms have been pushed back a tick in priority. They didn't introduce SB-E when SB came out because they wanted to make SB a priority, and now they're working on qualifying SB-E.. I'd expect to see "IB-E" about this long after the ivy debut.. don't forget that its not as simple as saying "oh they should just wait for IB".. they have to design and qualify a significantly different design and basically a whole new platform

the 8 core will come out on Ivy Bridge. Why show all your cards at the start?

Ivy Bridge is different than Ivy Bridge-E

I'm think the next platform after Sandy Bridge will have the 8 cores on desktop processor. If Q4 time of the year is too hard to release products, then moving the release to January makes sense.

Really looking forward to a platform with 14 SATA ports built-in and all those PCI-E lanes.

I think it's kind of weird SB-E and 1155 Ivy are so close now, though. I wouldn't be surprised if they pushed Ivy back as well now.

They have time. Worst case scenario for them they will have to price drop 32nm gulftowns.

SB-E is supposed to have 14 sata ports?

Not exactly. The X79 chipset-based motherboards that SB-E CPUs will run on will actually have 10 SATA 6.0 Gbps ports. Up to eight of those can be configured as SAS ports by the mobo manufacturers. If an X79 mobo has 14 SATA ports, four of those 14 ports would have been provided via an onboard third-party (e.g. Marvell) controller chip.

there are four sata 3.0 ports as well, making 14 total.

Was hoping it'd be out this year and some nice Xmas deals so I could upgrade. Too bad :(

Well, there is some good news. I for one was waiting for SB-E this fall for my upgrade due to the PCI-E 3.0 slots (for upgradability). But the good news is that there are Z68 mobos coming out soon with PCI-E 3.0 so waiting for SB-E isn't the only choice.

Ugh, hurry up. I'm ready to dump the 790i. At least it's a new refurb with new ram. Should last until then at least.

I have a feeling i may become impatient and upgrade the rest of my rig :/
