Would it be possibly to use an ATI card for your main GPU, and to use my old GTX 260 for physx?

edit:

Heh, should have read the post a few down first.

Google search for hybrid physx. You just have to use a hack to keep nvidia from disabling physx when ati hardware is detected.

I would give you the link but Hard blocks it.

Maybe they will sell more gpus when they stop doing silly things like that.

Has anyone had any first hand experience with this,I am curious too. Anyone have any luck with the hacked drivers?

It works no differently than when you use 260 for PhysX alongside a 480.
The hack worked flawlessly for me with a 9800GTX+ and a 5780, in Cryostatis, Batman AA, Unreal3, and the craptastic Dark Void. Though the last time I tried it was prolly more than six months ago.

I don't know why [H] blocks the website with the hack. Their stated reason, the hack being infected, turned out to be incorrect. I have speculated that possible pressure from an advertiser, or perhaps personal or professional problems with that other site, or it's owners/contributors could be reasons. They are not saying, so I guess it really does not matter.

+1 6950 plus gtx280 here.

Works great! Just takes a little research and reading.

From my understanding, they "accidentally" enabled this with a beta release driver. Can't remember the version off the top of my head. But a quick google should tell.

Work fine install your nv card run the driver crack newest ver 1.4 of it . Restart then extend desktop to second monitor using vga (no real monitor needed) reboot done.gpuz will show physx enabled install nvidia sys tools if you want control of the card settings. Had mine running for a while first with a old 9800 now with a gtx 460 works awsome i play alot of ut3 and the physx maps hual ass. Without it they are unplayable. My specs are in my sig if you have question or need the file pm me and dont worry the file is not infected. Even if you av says it is.

257.15 is the version where they didn't block installation on systems with ATI cards. I've been doing hybrid PhysX for a year, and 257.15 is the simplest way, assuming your card is supported in that version. Just install both cards and their drivers (using 257.15 for the Nvidia), and it just works without having to do anything else. If you're just doing PhysX with the Nvidia, then there isn't really a need to update the drivers, so just stick at 257.15 and let everything "just work".

Just get the hybrid PhysX patch. It works great last time I used it. Anyways its pretty good, I didn't find it worth it since the card heated everything up much more.

ATI + Nvidia for PhysX "just works" but your modern games won't. ;)

is there an easy way to fully power down/off the Nvidia card for the 99% of applications that don't use PhysX?

I have Mirror's Edge and Metro 2033 and no other reason to keep an Nvidia card in my case sucking up all that power and making heat and noise...

FYI, the "unlocked" 257.15 includes PhysX 9.10.0222. Today's 275.33 includes PhysX 9.10.0514. It's hard to find good changelogs, but .0513 listed "Bug fixes for Mafia 2" as basically the only thing relating to games. As with staying on an older version of any driver or software, there's always the possibility that a new program will have issues with it. However, you're talking about a framework here, so there's a good chance new apps will be made with backward compatibility in mind, plus it's a minor dot revision, not huge changes. The version number has gone up 0.0.0292 in just over a year (compared to the display driver's 18.18 increase).

Also, you can upgrade the PhysX software independently of the display driver. As long as there aren't major changes to the architecture of either the driver or PhysX software, you can stick with 257.15 and upgrade to the latest PhysX to get fixes and support for new games anyway.

And this is all assuming that a new game is actually released with GPU PhysX support. =)

they do work together, but not worth the trouble getting them to work imo

well

that is about where I am at

plugged GTX285 between 2@6950 [reference] on Rampage III Formula
285.27 NV driver
PhysX 9.11.0621
hybrid mod 1.04

the "quick" tutorials on this supposedly easy hack say this should work

Card is recognized by both v7 folding client and GPU-Z

but will not fold or enable PhysX

i used a gtx 460 and i wouldnt go below that but if you have one there you can try it and see

what drivers are you guys using

I've had this shit all tore apart, drivers nuked and reinstalled, 2 ATI cards, one ATI card, 9 ways from Sunday

never any PhysX or folding on the 285 when a red card is in

Had this working with much older drivers. You will also need a monitor or dummy plug connected to your 285.

yeah, hey, update

kept digging and sure as shit nVidia borked the fix again in their new drivers

unbelievable what asshats those guys are

anyway, GenL over at HGOHQ is the man with the plan, the Geohot of hybrid PhysX as it were

he has a workaround in beta, no links in the main google hits, you have to dig in the forums and PM him for further instructions

I joined their forum so I can get to the source, not approved yet, I will update this board as I progress

Thanks for the answer dook, first I heard of a dummy load needed on the card...easy enough

Update

1.05 beta tested here and works with 6950/11.09-GTX285/285.27

setup still will not fold

Beta tested here with HD 6970 and GT240, everything regarding to PhysX works except CUDA and DirectCompute on the nVidia card, that might explain why it will not Fold.
