Alternative to 2209wa

Hi folks,

I am looking to pick up a pair of 22-24" LCDs that I will primarily use to work with text in IntelliJ/Visual Studio as well as Photoshop/Illustrator. I am a fairly lightweight gamer with some Civ V, Elemental: War of Magic, some DDO and occasionally the odd FPS like Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (yes an odd choice I know).

I missed picking up a pair of the 2209wa when they were still popping for that $219ish price and now that Dell US is out of them and the remaining stock up over $300 for new that's now not on my list. So I am seeking interesting alternatives.

I have a budget right now of about $450 to do this and I will settle for a single ZR24w if I have to but I would love to find a pair of panels if I can get them, preferably 16:10 with standard gamut. I've seen some interesting deals for 32" - 37" LCD TVs used as monitors but I am leery of the text quality on a screen that size and most only seem to be 1920x1080 which doesn't seem like a winner.

So interesting options folks? Keep in mind I really do want New panels I can get the usual 3 year warranty on. I am skeptical on refurbs for an LCD.

Thanks for the input.

Well given the ZR24w runs just under $400 street price if I go that route it will be purchasing just 1 not two. In a perfect world I would get both or better one of the Dell U3011's but I am too much of a realist for that.

I've been using a fairly bad 17" TN for a bit and while I dislike the text and color issues a lot I am going to try and see some screens at retaillers and see just how unreadable it is.

One of the screens on my radar at the moment is the Asus G235H or the H235H if I can find one. I expect I will not like either but until I have one on in front of me I can't really say one way or the other and it seems that these days so many screens have got 16:9 only the 16:10 seems to be something you pay a significant premium for.

The trouble is so much of this seems objective as to quality in a way as far as LCDs go. My trouble is I was spoiled I spent a long time with good CRTs and always stayed well away from LCDs to the point where identifying where that new sweet spot is going to be is becoming a challenge.

At any rate I am spending Saturday crawling through as many different of the local stores here including Fry's to see what's available for me to find out if one of the lower grade TNs will pass as good enough for what I want to do.

I used to work with 2 20" CRTs at 1600x1200 all day long and then 1 20" now I am using a borrowed 17" junk TN 1440x900 I-Inc screen until I pick up something new this weekend. At this point I may jump at a pair of the lower grade TNs just to get the size back and better screen real estate.

Alas there doesn't seem to be a real successor to that 2209wa out there right now, which is unfortunate because everything I've read says it would have fit what I want to do rather ideally.

Yea it is too bad they discontinued the 2209wa. I am running 3 in eyefinity and I was really hoping to pickup 3 more this year for a eyefinity 6 card. I don't know of a direct replacement but the ZR24w is quite nice. I would also check out the dell deals if you can live with the 16:9 on the u2211h,u2311h, or u2411h.

The 2209WA should have been discontinued. It uses almost 60 watts of power at half brightness while the U2311 uses 30 W even while maintaining a minor panel size advantage.

Consider that if you calibrate your screen with a colormeter and/or don't want tanned retnia's, I don't think you need to run the 2209wa higher than 26 brightness so the fact that it can pull more power doesn't mean much to me.

I'd rather have 16:10 for the toolbar space and the extra pixels do come in handy for video controls without blocking the image and most movies aren't 16:9 but 1.85:1, 2.35:1 or 2.40:1, so since they don't fill a whole screen anyway I'd rather have the extra vertical space for flexibility myself and it helps give extra width in portrait mode when reading long documents.

For those reasons I'd much rather have a updated LED backlight 2209wa or a 23"-24" one that is 1920x1200 or better.

The 19: sony g420s did 1920x1440 and I used that for years so 1920x1080 just feels like I'm giving up too much space and many websites don't really scale well on widescreens either.

For me the 2209wa I have is perfect and I'm only hoping that we'll see at least a few 23"-24" 1920x1200 120hz e-ips screens come out under $400 so I could have Displayport and could play with some 3d glasses but still have good colors and viewing angles and to keep me from having to consider a iPad 2 for browsing and reading plus a cheep TN 120hz panel for just gaming and possibly 3D.

I run mine at 17 brightness which most certainly doesn't use the full 60w. I would just about order one of those plugin meters to prove it. In regards to the ratio 16:10 is far superior for my uses being coding and gaming. I do not consider it the end all panel but it definitely puts the majority of the newer ones to shame. The power thing also isn't that big of a deal as the performance is what I care about.

You do know that the 23" replacement has both higher vertical and horizontal resolution, right?

Yes I do know the resolution is higher however, the actual screen size in relation to the number of pixels on the 2209wa far better suits my needs as it is mainly programming and text reading. I am not shy to say my eyes aren't the best so huge resolutions aren't my cup of tea when it comes to a single screen. I do however enjoy large scale setups such as my quad monitor setup with the 2209wa's. In no way do I mean to say the U2311h is a bad lcd it just doesn't fit my needs currently and I am sure there are others out there like me.

In that case the Fujitsu P22W-5 and the LG W2220P both use the same panel as the 2209WA and should be suitable replacements.

Not everyone cares about this sort of thing. In a world of crap LCD's the 2209wa was a gem. Power use be damned. Perhaps you were looking for the softforum.

~84% of an LCD's total carbon emission is generated during their lifetime operation. It may not matter to you, but if you've ever read industry publications like Information Display you would have observed that power efficiency development effectively drives performance gains globally in LCDs.

The 2209WA has been replaced appropriately given the above doubling of power efficiency performance by the U2311.

I have a pair of 2209wa monitors and a 'kill a watt' meter. At '10' brightness, which is perfect for me, one of these monitors draws 40 watts. They could draw 100 watts and I wouldn't care, these are awesome screens.

I have to agree with this as saving a few watts doesn't really matter to me as that is a whole different discussion with the eco stuff. If I wanted power efficiency to the max I would run different parts than crossfire video cards among other parts.
