Maybe I'm forgetting some news somewhere along the line, but what proof do we have that the phone has anything to do with Playstation, aside from the iconically labeled 4-button config and d-pad? It's entirely possible it's just a normal Android phone with console-like controls to enhance gaming.

Also, based on this picture, there is a strange logo I've never seen before in the bottom left-hand corner. I mean, I've seen it, but never on a Playstation-branded device...I've only seen it as a mark of the brand, used on boxes and advertisements and such.

Please note that I don't actually believe this...I, like most others, still think it's the eponymous "Playstation Phone", but I haven't seen anyone else think the possibility out loud that it's just an Android phone with some good controls. What say you, my fellow [H]ers?

Frankly IMO this phone came too late. This is what the PSP Go should have been from the start. By now they could have a second version with new features that would really sell it, not to mention addressing complaints of the first one. Now Sony is just playing catchup on a great idea. As long as it supports wifi and goes onto a 4G carrier, I think this will do somewhat decently for catching up.

What I'd be more interested in myself is if Nintendo will release something similar. I would totally rock a DS phone that could play all the old NES and SNES games.

Catch up? To what? Modern smartphones destroy the PSP and DS in terms of specs - this would very much be fast enough to be a new generation of mobile console (eg, PSP 2), probably will be faster than the 3DS too.

Catch up to demand for a PSP phone. The PSP Go was an unnecessary step before this in my opinion. Yes, modern smartphones do destroy the handheld consoles in terms of specs. I'll give you that.

Really?

It's made by Sony, it says playstation all over the UI.
It launches into the Sony Playstation XMB.
My only question is will those two circles in the middle act as capacitative analog sticks?
If not, I could really care less about the rest of the specs/details.

My thoughts on the PSP Go (if you care, lol):

The PSP Go was a resounding success for Sony. Now now, hold on, before you get all buttered up, hear me out:

By the time the Go was released, the PSP hardware was quite mature, yes? Pretty much all of the modifications that could be done to it had been. It was time for Sony to start thinking about its successor, right? Well, what makes more sense...risk a ton of money by releasing their next-gen handheld sans hard media, making it download-only? Or, putting existing proven hardware (which has had all the R&D already completed, might I add) in a slightly different form factor and seeing what the reaction is?

The PSP Go was a resounding success for Sony, from a RESEARCH point of view. Think of it as an expensive but very widespread consumer survey for the next generation PSP. I have no evidence to back this up, but it is something to consider, yes? A place for a second analog nub adds credence to this, likely to help determine the internal electronics layout.

I was all for it when I first heard it announced but saw a video of it against another android phone and it looked soooo SLOWWWW!!

Even if its just an android phone with a controller, I'll have to give it a good hard look. Sony still has plenty of time to screw this one up, so I'm not jumping in before I see how it shakes out.

It was a multi-million dollar failure. Distributing that non-selling turd across the globe cost them lots, whereas a small beta test would have given them research results at a fraction of the cost.

Someone must have gotten fired over the PSP Go.
