If you thought wirelessly charging your cell phone was cool, how about charging a car that way?

Why can't be build electric cars out of aluminum and composite materials, place a coil under the whole car and then put magnets in the roads that are spaced out for optimal charging while doing 60mph?
I have to question the efficiency of this. How much does it cost for a full charge from this vs charging with wires?
Assuming $0.12 US per KWh probably around $0.20 per hour at 120V
What would happen to the poor kitty when she walks through the charging field?
This would cost trillions of dollars.

The problem with government projects is they always have to take it from somewhere first. If they barrow it they are consuming future possibilities today, if they print it they devalue the currency/inflation, if they tax it they remove it from productive efforts first.and create tens of thousands much needed jobs
we need one of two things for the economy, a real war or something on the scale of the original Interstate/highway system
I'm not sure about the Tesla, but the Volt takes up to 16 hours to charge on 120v and up to 8 hours at 220v. Given the inefficiencies of an induction charging system, these times would increase significantly. Cool, but not practical...
This isnt new. The Saturn EV1 (1990s) was inductively charged, though you did have to push a paddle into a slot. Inductive charging IS inefficient, but an argument can be made that it is safer. No potentially exposed terminals and less likely to draw an electrical arc. Regardless, I still vote direct connect for better efficiency.
I do not think the US has the credit to borrow that much money. And who will lend us that much money? China?
The EV1's induction charge wasn't as inefficient I believe. I'm operating on memory of E-M Physics, but the powerloss falls off as a function of Distance^2, and the EV1 paddle had a near zero Distance. So it was a lot safer, without much drawback from lost power via induction charging.
I think people are already starting to look at what could have become out of the EV1 and lamenting GM being retarded. That car was a decade+ ahead of it's time. Imagine what could have been if development had continued.
I'm guessing it's not okay for the cats or dogs to sleep under that car in the garage...

a gigantic static fur ball
so what happens when you stick your hand between the 2 charging places, or for that matter your wet cat or dog or tool gets between the 2? I'm sure nothing, but still lol
This would cost trillions of dollars.
The lack of physics knowledge here disappoints me.

Considering what you quoted for the most part were people attempting to be funny i doubt you will get much sympathy for being disapointed.
Also makingt his US wide on every free way regardless if its just a coil will cost trillions. ..... and trillions of dollars will be a small price.
Why should I have to spend 6 digits to own a car like this? I'll never spend that kind of money to buy gasoline for my car/truck.

Also makingt his US wide on every free way regardless if its just a coil will cost trillions. Who cares if the coils themselves are cheap, thats not the #1 cost, the number 1 cost will be the physical construction of applying these onto an electrical grid through concrete and asphalt. Apply all of that to how many miles of free-way road (assuming this ONLY goes to free ways) and trillions of dollars will be a small price.
