When the Consumer Electronics Show opens this Thursday, one of the major players will be missing according to the Associated Press. Even though Apple is a leader in new innovations, it will not be present at CES. The reason is simple: Apple doesn’t do trade shows.

Apple's would-be competitors include Motorola, which has been hinting that it will show off its first tablet at the show. Dell and Acer Inc. are also expected to show tablets. Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve Ballmer will likely touch on tablets in his keynote speech Wednesday, an annual fixture the eve of the show's opening.

Shit! I was waiting for CES to hear about the new MBP. They really love to keep customers waiting, don't they?

No surprise, I don't recall Apple ever attending to be honest. They do their own shows, always have (for the most part, aside from MacWorld which is basically history now too).

Oh well, things change...

It's telling that the headline is "Apple's absence to be felt at CES gadget show" and not "Microsoft to attend CES and show new products". Apparently no one would care about the latter.

Apple prefers to do press conferences to announce and talk about their own products. This really isn't news, they've never been at CES and I doubt they ever will be. However there is the little rumor about them announcing a new iPad this month. Anyone wanna bet that if they do that it won't be long after CES to take the wind out of the sails of any competitors?

It's quite simple..... If Apple doesn't show up, none of it's fanboys will. Probably pretty smart on their part. Don't want them to see superior hardware and better open source type products. They might come to their senses! :)

I laughed. :D

I'm currently traveling at the moment, using my Thinkpad T410. I am surrounded by all MacBooks and MBPs and one (1) netbook.

Come to think of it, doesn't Apple just release the same ol' stuff in the same ol' chassis with the same ol' concepts?

That, or they don't want to be laughed at when they reveal a revolutionary, exciting, never before seen new product which is basically the same as their previous-generation product except now it has... A USB PORT... or something of similar silliness.

Apple doesn't go to trade shows because they don't allow competition. The goal of Apple is to own everything in its extremely proprietary world.

They don't need to go; they get all the free publicity they could ever want. They have the media eating out of their hands.

Thats the goal of almost all of Apple's competitors as well. Apple is just a tad more obvious with it.

Apple hardly ever does these shows in the first place.
Apple's vanity is not going to allow them to participate unless they have reason to believe they are going to be the star of the show. Too much noise at CES for anyone to really come out looking like a star.

Apple is not a leader in new innovations. They are a leader in repackaging the innovations of others.

Like, say, WebKit, HTML5 Canvas, Clang, that sort of stuff, yeah?

QFT.

Do you recall that iPad samples weren't actually given to tech reviewers? They were only given to lifestyle reviewers. If the tech reviewers had gotten it first, the iPad would have been laughed out of the market.

This is typical apple they usually don't show at CES. Hell they didn't show the IPAD until there own announcement.

Stupidest thing I have ever read.

You mean like almost every computer OEM? Or by a lot of TV OEMs? Or a lot of people who sell monitors? I could go on.

Not to give Apple too much praise, but you do realize that Apple almost single handedly created the modern music player and smart phone market, right? They weren't the first, but they were the first to make a real mark due to a great product and great marketing. Right now the future of the tablet market is up in the air. A lot of companies are making products, but it could end up being a short lived fad that will eventually die down or it might become something that will work as an alternative to netbooks for people who don't need a full computer.

The smart phone market was already going to take off without Apples help, they merely sped it up.
The ipod was neither first nor a particularly compelling device. itunes the service was, and even that was attempted b4, just not by people that had enough clout to get the studios/publishers on board. Repackaging other peoples innovations.
The ipad, even if not a fad, is little more than an up sized ipod. Just making an ipod bigger and changing one letter in it's name is not what I call innovation.

Apple is a marketing genius, I'll give them that, but innovators, no, not really.

Elitist fucks...

and this is coming from a stock owner.

Well, I don't think you could care less about apples politics...just checking AAPL rate shows something interesting: it has been growing madly since 2009, and doesn't seem to stop.:D

Not really because it's expected of Microsoft to be at CES. I think if Microsoft didn't show up it would be a bigger deal actually. The only people that care about Apple's "innovations" in technolgy are Apply fanboys.

Macworld takes place around the same time as CES.... And is usually next door..... They don;t do trade shows my Arse!

Wired Mag said:
“The really important thing with Macworld is that it’s popular, and it’s one of the last bastions where just a regular old user can come, go shopping and go to conference sessions,” said Paul Kent, International Data Group’s general manager of Macworld Expo 2010. “Macworld in the absence of Apple becomes a fan fest.”

Apple in 2008 announced it was pulling out of Macworld because its retail presence had grown strong and trade shows were no longer necessary to connect with customers.

ITT we educate ourselves instead of looking like ignorant smartmouthed jerkoffs.

The smart phone market was kind of stuck in a groove prior to the iPhone. Yes it would have grown eventually, but Apple spurred it on and forced both companies and consumers to take notice. RIM and Palm weren't doing much with the market, they were both content with their devices being primarily used for business needs and a very small number of normal consumers. You're trying to discredit what happened by saying it was going to happen anyway. While true, it doesn't negate what I said.

The iPod was a good device at the time, coupled with a good service. As you might have missed in my post I clearly stated it wasn't the first so why the hell do you feel the need to repeat that? I'm surprised you didn't repeat that same statement from your iPhone argument. iTunes and the iPod did change the market completely.

Let me educate you on something: Innovation is a funny word. Very few people actually understand what it really means. They would rather just toss it around and not bother to actually get it. Innovation doesn't just apply to something 100% new and unique. The idea behind innovation is something new, but its not to the extreme that many people seem to think. I think a good example is the Nintendo Wii. It uses existing technology all the way, nothing in the technology is new and heck its even been done before in gaming. What Nintendo did do however was take this technology, make it work (please don't try to argue about game quality it doesn't matter in this case), take it in a different direction and completely alter the course of the console market. The term innovation still applies to them, somewhat loosely, but its there.

Does this little lesson in anyway apply to Apple? I'm going to leave that argument to someone who knows a lot more about the products in those markets before Apple's devices showed up. That said, the tablet market would have probably died off without the iPad. Tablet PCs did what they needed to do, but they weren't great. That is where the "funny" part of innovation comes in. Without making this thing longer I'll put it quickly a simply: Innovation is not invention, they're different things and do not always go together.

While I could go on another little tangent I'll just say this: Even if you can create a compelling argument against using the term innovation it really doesn't matter. You're arguing from a bias and trying to use a rather meaningless argument that in no way really detracts from anything at all. How much innovation do you see on the CES floor? Is every company innovating using the common misunderstanding of the word or are they "simply" repackaging everyone else's ideas and calling it their own?

The problem with the Ipad is that it's not a computer, it's a very very limited device. It's cool and shiny, that's for sure, but if Apple would have used it in a complete computer with their OS on it (a real OS not a SmartPhone OS), it would have been much more applealing..

Its not supposed to be a full featured computer. Modern tablets have the potential to be viable alternatives to netbooks or full laptops for people who don't need full computers. It may end up not being a huge market and tablets will end up falling into obscurity again, but we'll have to wait until the new gadget frenzy of it wears off to find out.

In my case I want one to take notes or surf the web for something in class and because my classes can go over four hours long my current laptop simply doesn't cut it. I don't like netbooks and I have no use for a netbook outside of class and the iPad will also double as the device I carry with my phone when I'm away from home. For what I usually do when I'm not home it will work as a good replacement to my current laptop.

INNOVATION - IT'S NOT WHO DOES IT FIRST - BUT WHO DOES IT FIRST RIGHT

The reason Apple doesn't go to CES is because it's filled with a bunch of neck beards and Intel interns who believe building their own crap just to run Windows or Linux is "1337"

You see...these nerds continue to delude themselves into believing open source is the future of the user market outside of work/enterprise market. They are paving the way for this future - so they purchase their crappy Android devices and mindlessly flame Apple users as brainwashed fanbois.

The typical Apple user doesn't care they are using an operating system meticulously built off on Unix. Most non-apple fans ignore this little fact that their P.O.S Windows OS is based off a hacked DOS shell bought from IBM.

OS X is superior to Windows in every way(i wont go into it, just google it, do the work yourself). OS X requires no product key, you and your friends can all go in on a copy of Lion in the summer and install it on every mac you come across that meets the system requirements.

Apple hardware isn't super awesome when it comes to desktops. Their laptops, and iDevices are where it's at. I personally have an Asus G17 gaming laptop running Windows 7. Because all I do is game on it. Everything else, I use my wife's Macbook Pro or my iPhone.

Gaming on apple comes in the form of apps on the AppStore for their iDevices. It's a great gaming platform and market.

You see...every device/OS has it's use. Like we use Ubuntu on our test bed computer lab at work. It runs VM that runs Windows.

Hating Apple because you can't afford to own both Apple and build your own PCs...is the way of middle class lackeys. Don't be a lackey.

Yea, get your fingers into important widely used things first, then suddenly change the license and screw people over. http://my.opera.com/haavard/blog/2009/07/07/webkit-patents
I suggest you stop getting your information from Opera "You need to randomize the browser ballot so that sometimes we come first or else it's unfair" Software.

Heh. No. In some ways, yes. In other ways, no.

OS X requires no product key, you and your friends can all go in on a copy of Lion in the summer and install it on every mac you come across that meets the system requirements.
That would be illegal.

My disliking of Apple has nothing to do with how expensive the OS and hardware is for it. It has to do with value for your money. Look at the hardware vs. price for ANY windows-based device vs. and apple-based. I will never grow to like Apple. Their OS is too damn simple.
