I have been contemplating getting the U2410 in January or February, but noticed that it has been 15 months since it first came out, and I would absolutely despise having a superior model come out a month after purchasing the U2410! So I decided to look into the launch dates of prior models from this segment:

  • U2410: Sep. 2009
  • 2408WFP: April 2008
  • 2407WFP-HC: Sep. 2007
  • 2405FPW: Oct. 2005

Would it be fair to assume that Q1-Q2 2011 holds a new 24" IPS flag ship model from Dell?

Recession/crisis could make certain high end product cycles prolonged, so maybe it is being too optimistic?

Am I just grasping at nothing here, or would it be safe to say that 2011 holds a replacement to the U2410?

What do you guys think?

I'm pretty sure the U2711 is the successor to the U2410. They're the same height. I doubt we'll see another 16:10 24" monitor from Dell. I hope I'm wrong.

Well i'm pretty sure there will be another 24" monitor from dell that will come out next year. Will it come out Jan-Feb? No clue. Unfortunately it seems like more and more are going the way of 16:9. However, the U3011 is still 16:10 and that's new so I wonder if Dell realizes some people prefer that aspect ratio.

I'm kind of in the same camp as you and plan on getting an IPS sometime next year in this size range and I'm secretly hoping that there's a nice refresh on the U2410 as well.

I really doubt dell sees the u2711 as the replacement to the u2410. Sure it's the same height, but it retails for like 400-500 more. With such a price differential I'm sure we will see Dell eventually replace the U2410 with something at a similar price.

The U2711 frequently goes on sale while the U2410 rarely does if that means anything.

You're right, the U2410 started out significantly cheaper than the 2408WFP did ($600 vs. $900).

Dell's keeping its 27 and 30-inch models in line with Apple. Apple discontinued its 24" 1920x1200 Cinema Display and replaced it with the 27-incher. The 30" Cinema Display is still 16:10, and that format is probably going to stick around, as it seems to be popular among professionals. I'm still calling the 24" 16:10 category dead.

unfortunately i think you might be right on the 24" 16:10 category being dead

the thought of a u2410 replacement that is only 16:9 makes it entirely less appealing to me

I think probably not. Dell really likes IPS technology for their high end panels. Well, I'm not aware of any new high end IPS panels out there, so no reason for them to revamp their monitors. Dell's monitor updates coincide with new panel releases. Company puts out new panel Dell likes, Dell designs monitor to use the panel and sells it.

The U2410 uses the same panel as the NEC PA241W and so on. It was released before the 2711 and 3011 simply because the 24" panel was released first.

So you can expect to see an update no sooner than if there's a new panel. When will that be? Can't say, the panel manufacturers are not really forthcoming with public info.

I love 16:10 monitor. That x1200 helps alot! I hope Dell doesnt get rid of it.

We won't see another 16:10 24 inch. 16:9 is the new hot standard , it sucks but what choice do we have.

I'm not sure the U2711 is really the true successor as it would have to come down in price quite a bit to be at price point.

Thanks for all the replies and input. What a depressing read! :(

Mind numbingly stupid if panel makers decide to kill off 1920 x 1200. What a terrible idea.

I completely agree that 16:9 is entirely less appealing!

Thanks for the clarification. Well, I will be hoping for panel makers to get going with new IPS panels soon then. :D ...the optimist I am.

Yes, me too!

I hope you are right. Personally I am not ever going to want to sit in front of a 27 inch monitor. Too big for my liking, 24 is perfect for my field of vision. There is also way too much heat dissipation from the larger displays, right into your face and eyes, as technologies are right now. Killing 24 inch monitors entirely cant happen, it would make no sense, unless 23.6 takes over. Man, I hate this 16:9 standard, I need vertical pixels in games and in serious applications.

What a depressing read... but thanks. Time to look for a good deal on the U2410 before they kill it off I guess.
