Hey all,
I'm in the market for a new card and could use some advice. I'm willing to spend up to $200 but would prefer not to hit that limit, though don't be afraid to list options that are slightly over. I have a $30 Newegg credit as well, so that can play a nice part in this.

As stated I'll be running at 1920x1200. I will have a 1055 for a cpu that I plan to push to 3.5 and up and have 8 gigs off ddr3 1600. I'm also open to OC'ing and most likely will.

The three main cards I've been looking at would be:
- AMD 6850:

- GTX 470:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500157&cm_re=470-_-14-500-157-_-Product
- 5870 (though this just sold out and went somewhat back up in price):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102883&cm_re=5870-_-14-102-883-_-Product

Any advice would be great.
Thanks

The 69xx series will be released in about 15-20 days. I would wait until then. If nothing else, it may push some of the more expensive cards (6870s for example) down into your price bracket.

In the sub-$200 market, I don't think there's anything to wait for.
Except maybe sales. But the new cards being released in December probably won't have any effect on the mid-range pricing.

Unless Nvidia is planning a $199 GTX 560 or something.

GTX 460 1GB and 6850 are your best options in the sub 200 market. Look out for heavilty discounted 470s on Cyber Monday as well. You might be able to snag one in that low 200s range.

Thanks for the advice everyone.
Lets assume that I can't wait. Given the current cards what are your thoughts?

That's what I'm waiting for. I missed out on the MSI deal (I got up about 40 minutes after the sale started and it was sold out already) and am kicking myself for it. I was thinking about waiting for the next generation chips as I have a GTX 275 right now but I think it's starting to die (when the PC is off for the evening and I start it back up I have a pink line on the right side of the monitor but after about 5 minutes it goes away) but I failed to fill out my warranty card on it in time.

Are you planning to head down to a local store to pick one up? Online stores don't ship on Sunday and they aren't shipping anymore today so Monday would be the soonest it would be able to get shipped so you may as well wait for the Cyber Monday deals and pay for faster shipping.

I plan on waiting for cyber Monday. I'd just like recommendations on what's available now and not what's going to be released in the coming month.

I recently picked up a 470 from a member on here and had it on an old e6550. It ran well, but I needed to upgrade my proc so I got a Q6600 and have not got a chance to test it out yet on it as I'm still trying to get a stable OC on the Q66.

However - The 470 IMHO would be your best bet, and you can pick them up for $200 on here easily.

GFX wise it could handle everything I threw at it, only thing holding me back was my proc.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of those. I'd look for the best deal, and right now it seems the 470 gives you the best bang for the buck at about $200 or even less.

I snagged a 470 for $158 from Newegg's BF sale, if you can find something comparable on CM then that would be your best bet.

Yeah, me too. I really liked that MSI one though because they seem really high quality to me.

I recommend the GTX series (460 or better) --- though for sub-$200 the best you will find is the GTX465. The GTX470 is better but its roughly $50-100 more depending on brand and such ($250+).

There is a LIFETIME WARRANTY 1GB version of the GTX 465 by EVGA on sale for $199 right now.... pretty hot for the better, lifetime warranty GTX465.

The gtx 460 is a better card in almost every way than the gtx 465. It is NOT worth $199 IMO.

+1
Retarded card unless it unlocks to a 470, then it has meaning.

Get a 460 1GB (and don't fall for that crappy deceptive EVGA 288core 460 1GB) or 6850, whichever is cheaper

+1 for the 465 being worthless. Its a give and take weighing the performance gains of a 470 for the heat and power penalty it brings relative to a 460, the 465 however gets the worst of both cards.

You should fold with it or something. Most of the remaining 8800GTX's have been fighting the good fight for over 3 years, they deserve to go down in battle...

...and after that you can give it a viking funeral in your oven for some zombie card action:D

Unless someone can make better use of it as a gaming card, a far more prestigious life for such a veteran!

I think nvidia has ATI beat right now:

The best deals for your resolution are:

GTX 460 1GB (nvidia's lower power-consumption option) - This will likely become a $150 card quite soon.
6850 (Eyefinity option) - Not sure what's going on with 68XX pricing...
GTX 470 (More memory, best performer, but power-hungry) - I've seen this sell for around $200, used (and around $181 during the BF-sales just recently).

All 3 overclock quite well. The 6870 is overpriced and has little overclocking headroom.

I'm really waiting for a GTX 560 or 570 (and then for that to come down in price). If I had to choose right now, it'd be the GTX 470 (I don't need Eyefinity, and it'll be idle most of the time anyway so power-consumption isn't a huge deal-breaker).

The $215 5870 was a great deal, however. I just didn't see it as an upgrade from the 470 option.

Cyber Monday is going to be about 98% suck just like Black Friday. Those are noob buying holidays (as in noobs to hot deals).

I'm guessing that only somewhere in the area of 2% of the deals will be good/great prices on good, in-demand products (these will sell out in seconds/minutes). About 83% of the deals will be OK/decent prices on stuff that most people don't want, stuff that stores have excess inventory of. Another 15% are just gonna be crappy deals.

Plus the 2% good deals are going to sell out in 2minutes due to 2,000 people with scripts.

I'd have to agree with everything here except for the 5870 part, the 5870 is a better buy than the 470 for the same money.

Here's a 470 for $200

Heh, I think it is more like 99.9% suckage, and .1% good, but out of stock.

Oh well, I guess we will be sure to see a better cyber Monday deal in '11 right ? ;)

Cyber Monday seemed essentially non-existant this year. I suppose that is good however, as I dropped about $500 on the best deals from BF and my wallet can't take any more abuse right now.:D

Do you guys think this is worth jumping on?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500157

I know there have been better deals, but now that BF & CM are pretty much over, do you think they'll drop anytime soon?
Also it's said that the 470 is great at over clocking, how limiting is that with the stock heat sink and fan? What kind of increases should I expect?

Thanks
Bob

Not really unless you have to buy now. The 570's will be released in 8 days if anything that may lower prices on the 470's by a few dollars.

To those of you swapping in a 470 from an 8xxx - are you able to run off the same power supply?

This !

By the time 570, 560 will come out soon and 470 and 460 will be phase out quickly and price drop.

I just bit on the $215 AR 5870. Minus the $30 Newegg credit for a total out of pocket of $185, not to shabby dare I say.

Oh you already bought it 5870 ? good luck and hope ATI drivers will works for your games.

If not then take it back and get another different brands whatever.

What's your reasoning?
The 5870 is a proven line of cards that I've read only good reviews from. I didn't even mention what brand I bought, though I guess you know of the deal. Sure Sapphire isn't the brand I would have chosen had I a different option, though the next card up was a decent price jump and out of stock to boot.
For the price it will cost me out of pocket I'm quite pleased with this purchase.

The 470 would have been a nice option if it went further down on sale, but frankly I'm tired of waiting and didn't want to deal with the heat/ noise.
