E6600 to i7-950

So what will i see in terms of performace changes? Obviously it will increase my performnce across the board, but is it worth it to go to an i7, or should i look for a higher clocked c2q?
 
Are you intent on upgrading right away? Sandy bridge will be out very shortly which is even faster, and even if you don't want the fastest there is, the current line of i7 will be cheaper used.
 
i7 with an ssd is so impressively fast..at 3.8 turbo on is so fast doing tasks it still amazes me even after 11 months..file conversion ,dvd burns, video encoding, just about any thing you do is stunningly fast..
Its hard for me to see how SB will be so much faster than these i7 rigs..to chop off a few seconds off a task is not going to make much of a difference to me...
 
I'm planning on doing the same upgrade. I'm tasked with which motherboard and memory to buy. Gotta have something to put my shiny, new Revodrive into. :)
 
I am looking at upgrading used (through this forum actually, with an awesome trader ;) ).

Is Sandy bridge LGA1366? is this the hexacore that everyone is talking about? Sorry, I am out of date on proc's ;)

The talk is 20% clock for clock, so that's pretty big

Sandy Brige is Socket 1155, so another new socket, and they'll be quad-cores. There is a high-end Sandy Bridge coming late next year that will be socket 2011.
 
I'd end up waiting my entire life because there is always something new and better just on the horizon. So I bit the bullet - 950 with 12GB of RAM on the way. My e6600 2.4Ghz has served me well but it's time to move on. :)
 
I just built a new desktop with a i7 950 @ 4.2ghz prime stable @ 1.35V.. hoping for 4.4-4.5ghz out of it tops.. :eek: its a noticeable upgrade from my already fast arrandale i7 620m lappy @ 3.33ghz turbo boost. I don't even have a ssd in this desktop yet and its amazing, combine it with the Nvidia GTS450 I got it rips through whatever I can throw at it with ease. I can barely push my i7 lappy very hard much less this 4.2ghz monster. I'm very happy with my i7s so far!

Coming from a old Core 2 duo to a 950 even at stock clocks will be a good upgrade, oc it and its no contest.

Some super pi times of systems I own / have access too:
Bloomfield i7 950 @ 4.21ghz, super pi 1m: 9.701 sec
Bloomfield i7 950 @ 3.06 stock clocks, super pi 1m: 12.821 sec
Arrandale i7 620m @ 3.33ghz, super pi 1m: 13.750 sec
Yorkfield c2q 8200 @ 2.33ghz super pi 1m: 23.104 sec
Conroe c2d e6400 @ 2.13ghz super pi 1m: 27.984 sec
San Diego a64 3700+ @ 2.67ghz super pi 1m: 31.382 sec
Barton mobile axp 2400+ @ 2.55ghz super pi 1m: 39.992 sec
pineview-n intel atom n450@ 1.66 ghz super pi 1m: 1 min 30 sec
 
just got the micro center biweekly paper and the i7 950 has a -$80 in store price..
micro center sells the 950 for $279...

$200 i7-950, if anyone is interested. BTW if you spend more than $10 at MC you get a 5% discount. The discount starts a couple of days after you actually get the 5% off receipt, and its only good for 1 single item.
(yes i know there are only a few MC's out there)

I got the same deal, got it with the P6X58D-E mobo and some corsair tri channel ram. and while it was expensive, the performance upgrade was well worth it.

Man, Microcenter is really offering some stiff competition to Tigerdirect, Newegg, etc... I wonder how much further they'll drop their prices come BF

The Houston store has 20+ I7 950's in stock at $199.99. Just last week is was $229.99 and has been for awhile. So I buy the CPU now and wait a few days and go back for the motherboard which is the exact same price as newegg and use the coupon and get it for less even after taxes. Sounds good, I just might pull the pin on the purchase very soon. Thanks for the heads up!
