Guru3d 6870/6850 review

Good review, but it basically was what was suggested in the forums these past few days. I'm pissed that I sold my 4870 and didn't wait for 69xx (but it's all good because I was going to go 460, but now I'm just going to go 6870 if they're really at $249).

I'm pissed that I bought a freakin 5830!

Whelp, AMD definitely succeeded.......It can even be argued that the 6870 is better than GTX 470 in performance, and that's not even factoring that it's cooler and calmer.........

AMD= BALLLIN!

The upcoming weeks/months are going to filled with entertaining threads of blind Nvidia fans justifying purchases. Popcorn at the ready.

If Crossfire hasn't been fixed or polished for the 6xxx series, NVIDIA might have my money this time around.

Not the best comparison. The 5830 was widely considered to be priced to high and not fast enough for its intended audience. Most people just got a 5770 or moved up to a 5850.

It is a fair comparison. Similar # of SP's, similar bandwidth...

Around here and other places the 5830 is maligned understandably.

I got one for a good price, and have had a total blast with it. It withstood a barrage from a GTX 465 and a 460 768 in two reviews I wrote, and each time it performed admirably. It's a little hot, a little on the big side, but hey, it's a 5-series card with a 256 bit memory interface... and I have it only clocked @ 875/1200 right now and it still pushes 14.0 GPixel / 49 GTexel fillrate and 153.6 GB/s bandwidth. :) ... and it is perfect for 1280x720-1920x1080 gaming with conservative to fair amounts of AA plus 16xAF...

Since Cat 10.6 I haven't been able to get my old OC back (920/1250), and at that old speed it nipped the heels of 5850...

So in THAT regard, if 6850 can game like THAT, then it's a damn good thing, provided the price is right... especially if it handles tessellation a bit better.

Yep, can't wait to read posts talking about "bad" drivers and Physx being incredible.......

Nothing like bringing gasoline to a bonfire. Maybe edit your post and mention single card use and not dual card use. Crossfire still seems to fall short compared to SLI. Hence the surge of 460 SLI

You read what Vexerz wrote?

That's one way to look at it, but they don't have our money yet - so they may work harder to get it working. I noticed the 4800 series started having crossfire issues once the 5800 series became more mainstream, and support from there seemed to dwindle. This isn't remaining true through because the 5800 guys are having just as much trouble. Lets hope....

Look at the time post... lol ... I'll wait for more evidence. Especially from [H]. One title doesn't scream, "fixed" ...

Look at vexerz last picture, it is crossfire scaling in BFBC2. It scales nearly 100%. A 6850 CF setup is significantly better than a 5850 CF setup now.

Well judging by the Guru3D review, 6870 Crossfire is faster than 5870 Crossfire despite being a slower card individually. So yes, I'd say it's improved.

So 6870 ~= GTX470 for performance? Both are going to be ~$249 now w/Nvidia price cuts? Nothing new in performance, its just cheaper now-- sounds good to me. I might just wait a bit and see what happens closer to xmas.

Amazing from one review of one title that everyone is jumping on the "fixed" bandwagon. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but isn't it jumping the gun to label it as "improved" or fixed?

I just hope that e-tailors don't rape the price

That bodes well for the 6970, if they can get 470 performance from the 6870.

This makes me even more interested at what Cayman will be capable of. Waiting impatiently for the [H] review too.

Let's pray they have a good abundance of supply this time. The 5870, 5850 launch was horrible if you weren't in right on the day of launch. If the 6870 stays locked at $250.00 then that's awesome.

I just hope they are priced good other wise I will just get the gtx 460.

Simple solution for your crossfire dilemma. Its 1 game so you have somewhat of a point to be skeptical but really, just get a single GPU Cayman/Cayman XT for what will probably be the same cost.

GTX 460 1gb for $150 after rebate will be the new price/performance king... Im guessing we see this soon. Maybe this weekend.

My psychic told me she saw a 6850 in my future, yet couldn't me winning lottery numbers.

I thought it was only dropping $22?

edit: After rebate. Missed that part.

So the new paradigm will be 460/6850 (budget)-->6870 (mid-range)-->480 (king)-->580 (?).

Price will be the main focus for me Vexerz. I just don't want to see the price gauging this time around. That's what I'm leaning toward is the Cayman/XT or whatever the model number happends to be. It all depends on how much they are and their availability and if eK has a block out around launch! lol

I've been hearing Cayman will have 1280 shader power or 1920. Gawd I hope it's over 1900.

These next few months are going to be fun :)

You are forgetting about the 6950, 6970 and 6990. If I had to guess it would go like this:
460<6850<470<6870<480<6950<580<6970<5970<6990

This is all I have to say about this..............

PRICE WAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those of you who stayed out of the current gen 5xxx and Fermis look like you are getting one hell of a deal thanks to ATI. After all, nVidia felt threatened enough to drop the hammer on their 460 and 470 pricing.

I can't argue with that. I have a 4870x2 and a GT 470 (sli). I don't think I can go crossfire/sli ever again myself. The price gouging will most likely happen though from vendors like Newegg and Tigerdirect.

Even if its above 10% MSRP I would buy asap on release date. Who knows if we get a repeat of the 5870 pricing. (early 5870 adopters = winners)

Going by what the 6870/6850 have shown, Cayman Pro (5950) should be as fast as the gtx480 and 6970 will be obviously faster. Then comes Antilles (6990) which will crush everything else and be faster than the 5970.

I was going to snag a 470... Wonder how prices and availability will go over the next couple of weeks. Also need to see some minimum FPS between the two.

Some day we are going to find out AMD and Nvidia are the same company and we are prey to the biggest punking in the history of the world. :D

Mid-range price wars are the tastiest of price-wars, hopefully we will see the end result of it all before Black Friday...:D
