Verizon iPhone (more than a rumor)

I just gotta ask: why would people care so much about a Verizon version of the iPhone 4? You'll get the same service at basically the same speeds and most assuredly for pretty much the same pricing so... what gives?

Because the ATT network and the Verizon/Sprint network (they work together nowadays, donchaknow) are nowhere NEAR the same thing.

ATT does not work at my house. Period. If one of my friends comes over with ATT, he has to step onto the balcony to get 1 bar, and even then, if he turns his head the wrong way, bam no signal.

Verizon, I get 5 bars. I get 4 bars or more everywhere I go. ATT, not so much.

I'll admit, I'm unlikely to get an iPhone (or any smartphone) because I think the rates they charge for Data is insane (everyone). Particularly because I spend 23 hours out of the day in wifi, so I would likely use less then 10mb a month via 3g

hmmm, I'm going to have to check with friends and see what kind of data transfer speeds they get with verizons 3G service around here. As long as I can still get unlimited data and verizon keeps their dirty hands off the OS, I'd probably be willing to switch over from AT&T.

I'm really getting sick of AT&T's spotty coverage lately. Just a year ago, I got a consistant 300+ kb/s download speed (and full bars) at work on my iphone over 3g. Over the past few months, I constantly see my bars drop from full to 1 or 2 and my d/l speeds hit the shitter (maybe 30kbs if I'm lucky) for a while. I really don't understand what they've (ATT) changed in their network around here, but it's really starting to piss me off.

But we're talkin' about an iPhone 4 here, not the best example of 3G or Wi-Fi reception anyway in a cell phone given the antenna situation... (zing!) ;)

So you're saying all that marketing bullshit from AT&T and Verizon about coverage is just that, bullshit? Say it ain't so!!! :D

My big question is, and I think an important one, will this be the current 3g, or the new LTE? I would hope not 3g.

I'm actually more excited about the new Windows 7 OS phones. I cant wait to see what comes out with those. But the point, and I think this cannot be over stated enough, is that all the options going to Verizon makes them the best competitor. Rather is be Andriod, windows, or iOS, Verizon will have it on their network. Hopefully this sort of model will put an end to network/ brand exclusivity BS.

If the Verizon iPhone doesn't start w/ LTE, which is right around the corner, then this will be a big mistake....although, your average buyer may not know the difference until it's too late.

If they can get it out before Xmas then I'll jump, but I can't wait forever to get a smartphone I'm so far behind :( (don't judge me! lol)

Verizon service in my city is beyond bad. Not sure how the iPhone going Verizon is a good idea.

Because they will sell the IPhone outside of your city?

Yes, but they'll also still sell it in my city, where the service has been so bad that something like the iPhone wouldn't really have even functioned for the past several months.

FWIW - where I live, Verizon has stores in places where they don't even have service. Even the salesperson will complain about that one. My mom lives a mile away from the store, and her phone won't even ring anymore. They've offered here a network extender (to extend their own profit), but when she's 40 feet away from the house, again, no more signal.

So, they've effectively sold her a landline for the cost of a cell phone and the extender, and all with a multi-year contract?

And the phone still cuts out. When she receives important calls (doctors), they've refused to deal with her since her phone cuts out. Verizon advises it's her phone, she buys a new one, same issues.

Apple doesn't need to get involved in that level of disservice. It's worse than the antenna fiasco. At least with that you can potentially hold it differently.

And yes, I live in a top-20 USA city.

I currently live in the middle of nowhere, but Verizon has 3G everywhere whereas all the AT&T users are forced to cluster around the single 2g tower.

Also, given that this has been reported as happening about 1230982309823 times over the past couple of years, I'll believe it when it's on sale on Verizon's web site.

I hear you, trust me I do. When I moved back to my home town (top 20 city) the community I lived in had nothing BUT Verizon so I had no choice. Coincidence that the one tower inside the community was Verizon only while nobody else dare touch a upper middle class master planned community? Right, more like the HOA's were getting a little under the table. My father in law would visit and borrow my phone to make calls until I told him his IPhone could make calls over my wi-fi. It has been like that for 3 years now. That is when I realized this stuff has nothing to do with what we want but the layers of crap that it goes through before I am told what I can use and where.

Who cares about iphone. The new android phones are better.
Droid X, Samsung Galaxy S, HTC EVO, all kick iphone's rear end !!

I guess we'll see what happens. Verizon's CEO made a comment recently that with the Droid line's success, a Verizon iPhone would be welcome, but not needed.

I wouldn't even pay for data if I was getting speeds such as.... I get about 3mbps on Tmobile and complain when it is below 500... I use Pandora alot, and it requires me to have decent data connection. I switched to Sprint for a little, but didn't think it was worth it as I got sub 400kbps :(.

heh, doesn't seem like Verzion is getting WP7 this year though :(. Looks like WP7 is heading to Tmobile and ATT first.

I have a droid incredible, but like both equally... they both have their ups and downs.

A verizon iphone would be a welcome addition.

Apple has the general public brainwashed so bad that an iphone on Verizon will hurt droid sales in a major way. Non-tech people seem to think that the iphone it's the only real smartphone on the market and anything else is a cheap copycat that doesn't work as well. That Best Buy employee that made the Evo/iphone video was spot on.

/shrug, I'll admit, if I could get an iPhone on Verizon without paying $15-30/month for data (that I won't use), I would probably get one. But that's mainly because I've had an iPod Touch for so long, and I have so many app's for it, that I don't want to buy again.

But I'll admit, I'm a very unusual case. Most people don't live/sleep/eat/breath in a WiFi environment, and most people who do haven't had an iPod touch since it first came out, and haven't collected dozens of apps (paid and free) that they use all the time. I don't want to rebuy them on Android because that would double/triple the price of whatever device I might buy. The only thing an iPhone would allow me to do, is only carry one device instead of two like I do now. And from a pocket space view, that would be nice.

But not $15-30/month + $200-300 one time nice.

Maybe because non-tech people don't care about the things android does better (customization) and instead care about the things iphone does better (apps, games).

bingo

Apple actually advertises it's apps too. Outside of the tech-world, your average consumer doesn't know much about android except that it's an 'iphone clone' and it's got a glowing red eye/screen (verizon commercial).

Out of everyone I know that has an android phone, a large majority would have an iphone if their service provider carried it... atleast for the people that aren't into rooting or hacking it (the non-techies)

You won't give the app issue a rest will you? I switched over from an iPhone and every app I had on there is available on Android and the games are starting to come in droves. Android's app market is much better than you give it credit for.

Sigh........ This rumor has been going on for months. Repeating it over and over isn't going to make it true......

As much as you don't want to hear it, gaming on android is years behind apple and the ever increasing combinations of cpu, gpu, and resolutions isn't helping.

...and people are already running into problems with games not running correctly on certain phones. You can't just pickup any Android phone and play the same games everyone else is playing. There are issues with devices having old firmware, slow CPUs, different resolutions, different aspect ratios, and different input mechanisms, different GPUs (or no GPU), and various other problems caused by large companies trying to milk money out of people with an open and free OS. There are currently more versions of the Android Galaxy S phones on the market than their have been different major revisions of the iPhone. The type of stuff going on with Android right now is also what completely murdered almost every attempt at Windows Mobile gaming.

Meanwhile Apple has this all nailed down. The total number of different iPhone models available is tiny (iPhone, 3G, 3GS, and 4) which makes the platform and easy target for developers. When a dev finishes up an app that plays perfect on a 3GS and a 4, they know that is tens of millions of customers that can happily play their game without a worry. Plus it is much easier for customers to buy games since they know if their phone will work or not before the purchase.

You won't ever see the game market for Android phones take off while Apple has a much more consistent platform for gaming.

The marketplace for Android, gaming aside, is a fine substitute for Apple's app store. Gaming is just getting started on the platform and is getting bigger every day. With Android growing like mad it's only a matter of time until gaming surpasses what Apple is offering.

Ocellaris....Apple has its fair share of problems with compatibility. As an example Daredevil Dave for instance has had massive problems with the original iPhone. It's incredibly short sighted to think that gaming on Android isn't going to take off.

Its not short sighted, its called realistic. If you can target one platform with a fixed set of hardware, or another platform with ??? for a CPU, ??? for firmware version, ??? screen resolution, and a ??? GPU... you will target the fixed platform first. Android would need to huge lead in market share before most devs would make it a lead platform for mobile game development.

The openness and free nature of Android make it a poor platform for games.

Based on the latest rumors and blogs, it would seem the iPhone 5 will be for Verizon as early as 1st quarter of 2011.

I am bored of my Blackberry Storm and would like to move on to something new.

Question: Can anyone chime in on their Exchange experiences on iPhone or Droid?

I know the iphone had problems with exchange initially but AFAIK, that's all been cleared up. It officially supports it now, but I couldn't go into specifics as I don't use mine as a business phone. I'm sure some of the other iphone people on here could give you a better answer.
