anyone try phase cooling?

I've seen phase cooling setups run $800-$900

These things are crazy, anywhere from -50c to -150c temps. It's basically a small AC unit for your processor. Rather expensive but I've heard of people buying the parts and building them on their own. Anybody got any experiance on this? If so whats it cost to build one of these on your own? Might be worth it if it's around $200-$300...
 
We took two phase change systems and a sub-zero garage in Alaska and had the highest Pentium overclock for about two years. 4.2GHz. Those XS boys are still butt-hurt over that. Called us liars and scammers because they could not beat it. That was the last time we ever tried for a "record," just got to be no fun after that. It was all "serious internet business" from there out. ;)
 
There is no single compressor cooler out there which can do -150C mate. Not even a dual stage cascade can do it. Single stage phase coolers you can expect to do -50C on idle and a little lower on full load depends what you want to cool with it. I have a dual stage monster at home which can do -130C by the flip of a switch. You can see the build log over here. These things can't be bought anywhere in the stores and are all custom build for a nice price.

I see. Wow that's nice. So what's the snag then, why does it cost so much? Is it the cost of the parts or the length of the time it takes to put together? Your system is huge but I've seen phase cooling systems built into the case in a section below it.

It looks like this is just one dude doing all the work himself. Can this just not be mass produced to sell for cheaper?
 
You can still buy an OverClockers Cryo-Z unit. They are well made but they don't hold a large load. they are in the $300 price range.

I don't see the point for practical use. You can build a pretty nice water chiller based on a window AC for much less. You won't get temps in the -50s, but you can cool a much heavier load. You also don't need any special equipment as long as you are careful and don't let the gas out when moving the evaporator.

Well to be honest with you this is the price of most of the parts. One compressor alone could be 200-300 buck. See where this is going. The dual stages are very expensive to build since there is good amount of time spent tweaking it in for the desired load as well. All in on these units make sens for benchers and that's it. You can get a used single stage for a little play time for as much as 250.

Ohh yeah! I want to see your water chiller running for 8 hours full load compared to a single stage. I think the water would get pretty toasty at some point. :D

well I can tell you that I run a chiller with a Phenom II x4 965 Black @ 4.4GHz, ran in on LinX for 24 hours... the water temp didn't raise at all... further more max load temp was around 7.5C (coolant temp was a steady -24c)

that being said I have no clue what my idle temps are, the temp sensor seems to stop at 0c, so let's just say it cold :p

Looks like you have a nice set up there. I mean I can not speak from experience since I never ran a chilled water set up etc. I can tell you all about Phase/Dice/LN2 stuff. Now if you water is -26C how do you deal with the condensation and what pump are you using on this set up?

I always wondered why this method of cooling never took off. You could with the right setup cool all chips in a system without worrying about condensation like u do in a water setup. Is the only thing that stops it from being more mainstream just the high cost of the systems?
 
Dice and L2N are limited, you purchase a limited supply and once your through you have to either refill and or purchase some more, basically for suicide runs..

TEC and Phase / water chillers, are supply sources that scrub heat through utilizing energy that comes out of your wall plug. They all provide sub zero temps and all are under ambient.

All of these meathods are going to yeild condensation, the only sub ambient cooling meathod i know of other than on /off TEC's is the evaporative liquid loop, commonly known as the bong or the swamp cooler

The main difference is the temps. Nothing out there can match liquid nitrogen or liquid helium as cooling. If you have a 50L or 30L dewar it lasts for a few hours of benching (not only suicide runs like mentioned above). You tweak your system in etc. and you ran benches at 6G or higher again and again. The lower the temp the more voltage you can put through the CPU or GPU and the higher the stable speed.
 
I thought I'd add to this thread with pics of a single stage phanse change unit I had, built by a personal builder (not company)

coldest idle temps were -51c
under load using a W3520 with 1.475 vcore, 1.475 vtt temps did not go below -49c in 06 CPU tests and Spi 32m
