9800GT Death Throes?

I would just like some input by all you knowledgable [H]ard-core forum dweller.

Yesterday my 9800GT 512MB video card started to output distorted/fuzzy screens. I know it is the video card at fault because when I changed the card for another everything went back to normal. And when I installed the 9800GT in another system it caused the same artifacts on that system.

Here are the photos

Notice how "Fuzzy Screen_2" which is supposed to be a simple post boot black screen with basic DOS-like writing seems to have the worst distortion?

Has anyone encountered these sorts of artifacts? Is it an easy fix? My idea of an easy fix was to replace it with a HD5770 which I've done but it would be great if I could salvage it so that I can upgrade an older system which currently has a crappy 8400GS. So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Wow! That's genius! It's worth a shot I guess. I got plenty of door stoppers and paper weights already. LOL

I've been to half a dozen forums and everyone just told me to throw it out. True silicon babies come here I see! :D

Thanks heaps for the tip dinlee23. Will post back about how it goes.

Hi, have you taken the shroud off the fan (if it has one) and checked to see it's not covered in fluff? If you havn't it's worth a shot, I once had a 6800gs that had that problem.

My 8800gt started off like "fuzzy screen 4" then went to "fuzzy screen 2". I tried baking it (twice) but it didn't fix it. It won't hurt to give baking a try though. I ended up RMA'ing it to EVGA...still waiting for them to accept the card I shipped to them.

You took it apart, baked it and then had the nuts to RMA the card? RMA should have been your first option, I would not feel sorry or be surprised at all if they reject your RMA.

Agreed that he should have RMAed first - but also understand the DIY mentality. Give the guy a break.

Naw fuck that, people trying to fix their own shit just make things much harder on the OEMs selling the card to repair and trouble shoot.

I would applaud his attempt if he didn't RMA it. That is just craziness to expect them to honor it after all that. They very well might honor it but this would just be showing outstanding customer service, I don't think anyone would expect or require them to honor it after all that. Thing is though if he just RMAd the thing in the first place everyone would expect them to honor it, he totally shot his chances to of getting a replacement.

Hope your RMA gets rejected and they make you pay for return shipping. OP, bake the card you have nothing to lose.

It's baked. Currently cooling.

I just noticed the there's a small patch of rust on the card. Something wet must have dripped on it so I'm not very hopeful of a good outcome but fingers crossed nonetheless.

Can't RMA it cos it's a hand me down so I don't even know the manufacturer. From web images it looks to be this Dell but I can't be sure.

I can't friggin believe it! It worked! It worked! Rust and all! HAHAHA

Don't know how long it will last or if it's running at decent temps, however some additional use is better than none! Might have nine lives like a cat! LOL

What's the best program to check the temps of the card?

You [H]ard-core ppls really are the best!

Great news, congratz.

For the rust maybe an old toothbrush and some rubbing alcohol? Can scrub it off. Really depends on where it is and what caused it. Was it maybe a leaking capacitor or something?
