iPhone & Dial up internet

I have dial up internet. I know, I know, it kills me but I don't have any other choice. I want to get an iPhone 4. Any reason I would need high-speed if I get one?

Only to download updates, but if you have access to broadband somewhere other than home you can just do that there.

The iPhone's own internet will be faster than your dial-up, so you might be able to just cancel it altogether.
 
If you are considering an iPhone can you get a cellular internet connection to replace the dialup? The data caps will be utter shit but its probably still better than being stuck on dialup.

wonder if paying the fee for tethering would be worth it in this case?
 
I only get Edge at my house though. I live in the boonies :) Considering satellite internet.

HughesNET and the like are pretty awful. I'd actually recommend staying on dialup over satellite if you can connect around 48-52k. Extremely expensive, the worst customer service I've ever had to deal with, and you are stuck with a tiny daily cap you could easily hit with dialup that then throttles you down to sub dialup speeds. Not to mention the latency is so bad it makes sshing into a remote server pretty much unusable let alone doing anything like gaming.

Thanks for that information. The only other option for me out here is line of sight broadband but my house is surrounded by acres of very tall trees.
Only one company around here said they would put up a 50ft tower on top of my house to get up over the trees, but someone else I knew had that same set up and lightening struck the tower and fried their computer. Like literal smoke coming out fried.
So now I don't know what the heck to do. Maybe I should start a separate topic on the subject...

T-Mobile gets almost zero reception at my house.
 
I didn't really read the thread (just quick-skimmed it), so here's my $0.02:

If you go with dialup, you will either need an external dialup modem that can be plugged into your iPhone, or a desktop/laptop machine plugged into a router that has a 56k modem (internal or external, doesn't matter).

What you can do if you use the desktop/laptop method is to enable Internet Connection Sharing, dialup, connect your iPhone to your network, and manually configure your iPhone to use that machine that is dialed up as the Default gateway (make sure that the IP/subnet and stuff is still the same that your iPhone is assigned though). Should work.

Or get tethering and connect via USB.

I'm on 6 acres in a forrest on the ocean so I'm in pretty much the same position. I can get a HSPA+ (3.5g+) signal here but the data cap is 5Gb/mo for $65 before tax. Absolutely worthless considering updates for a few machines and a patch or two for a game puts me at or over my monthly limit. The alternative is hughesnet satellite which starts at something like $140/mo with some absolutely terrible 150mb/day cap before being throttled down to dialup speeds. At least with the HSPA+ the latency stays around 100ms instead of 600+. Oh and I can get T1 (1.5mbps) provided I'm willing to fork out $800/mo plus a few thousand for equipment and installation. Not exactly reasonable. =P

The tower might be more of an eyesore than anything. Probably a pain to get a permit for not to mention what it does to property values. If you are worried about lightning just grab a networking surge protector for ethernet. While you are at it I'd probably get one that you can wire in at the breakers that protects the entire house as they are pretty cheap other than needing an electrician to install it but its a quick job.
 
Interesting, I'll have to look into that. My other option is the pay this company that just puts up towers and have them put it next to the house. But that's a couple grand...
