Replacement for 7900GS?

After many years of faithful service, the old girl finally gave up the ghost today. I was using it in a makeshift HTPC, that my son also used to play games (mostly the Lego series). What can I get that's cheap, and will give the same (or better) performance?

I've seen some great deals over the last weeks on HTPC cards for $20 AR or so, but I'm unsure how good they are for gaming. What should I be looking out for in the deals sections or FS/FT?
 
If you're looking for a cheap, budget card for gaming you should be able to find an old 8800GTS 640MB for $50-60. 8800GT or 8800GTS 512MB cards will run a little more, but will provide better performance. Should be good enough for most anything your son would want to play.
 
Go with a 5570. Should be a little upgrade over your 7900gs and will be right in your price point. If you want to spend a little more for a little more horsepower, go for a 5670.

Are those features unique to that make and model? I also have a 7900GS that I want to replace, but I have $100 in Best Buy gift cards. A video card is about the only thing they sell that I want.

Thanks for the replies. There have been a few different options posted, so I guess I'll see what I can find a deal on. I wish that GT240 was in stock for shipping, since the nearest Fry's is at least an hour away.
 
Just out of curiosity, what is the maximum amount you're willing to spend on a replacement card?
 
Try to get into a HD5xxx series, ideally something like an HD5670.
 
5670 is about as fast as an 8800GS and sometimes as fast as an 8800GT...it's a fine upgrade...but if BB has GTX260's for $100.....I'm buying one ASAP!!! Look into that, if not a 5670 or 9800GT would be fine.
 
Out of curiosity.. what brand is the dead card? Several companies have lifetime warranties on the cards. A few months ago I had a 7900gts die on me. EVGA replaced it with a 8800gt. Might want to check into that as a free possibility.

You need to register the warranty too so it might work.

OMG thank you, it’s an EVGA! I just checked their site with my login, and it’s registered and says it’s still under lifetime warranty - WOOT! I need to call tech support first as part of the procedure I guess, so I’ll have to wait until I get home to start. That’s awesome though, IDK why it never occurred to me that it might still be under warranty.

I think it's because when most people have a card die on them, they tend to buy something more of an upgrade than their previous card :D
 
I had my RMA rejected because I didn't register the card within 30 days from purchase. I guess I'm SOL, but does anyone know when they enacted that policy? I'm pretty sure it's only been that way for a couple of years. Is there still an EVGA rep kicking around these boards?
