3x1 Eyefinity on a Laptop?

I have a Gateway Nv5909 with an HD5650, it has a VGA and HDMI port. I've tried running 3 monitors by plugging in one with VGA, and the other through HDMI, both of which were native (no converters used) but when I try to group them in Catalyst, the only options are 2x1.

Is there any way I can get a laptop monitor, +2 monitors on the side set up working, or could it be put in with a new driver, or should I just give up hope?
 
only way to get this properly working is to use something like matrox's dual head to go.

Yup, this is the only way on laptops as far as I know - triplehead2go
 
the 5650 you have in the laptop isnt going to be the same as a real 5650 that you would put into a pc. its a mobile version which will be gimped compared to the "real" cards. you're gonna have the basic performance and capabilities of the card but not all of them.
 
If it missed this excuse the ignorance but I do wonder if the hardware to support this is in the mobile chips.
 
I was just thinking about if this was possible on my G73 (5870 mobility) the other day...

I don't think it's possible to hook up three monitors due to the lack of a DP output, but wouldn't two (the laptop monitor and one from the VGA or HDMI port) be possible? This would be huge for me as it would enable mult-monitor support for remote desktop sessions (work...)

Harmattan: Yeah, two monitors is definitely do-able, whether extended or in Eyefinity.

I guess the legacy thing extends to extending the desktop to 2 monitors too, huh? I guess the question is is it possible for them to include legacy support in a new driver?

Eddit: EyeFinity works with the laptops. Just read the links I posted up.

The Asus G73, can do the 3 display outputs. You just have to have the DP active adapter for the output your using.

What you want is only possible if the laptop panel is connected using displayport. The ability to do so has been touted as a major advantage of DP because DVI is apparently unsuitable and the legacy LVDS connection needs many more data wires for a high res display. OTOH I don't know if anyone is actually doing this yet.

The situation with laptops should improve for sure, after all ATI got the idea of doing eyefinity due to laptop makers asking for more outputs.

The G73 doesn't have a DP out - unless I have missed it the whole time I have had one.
 
I expect laptops to begin to go with triple mini displayport in next generation models. No idea why VGA is still on the outputs since most folks have DVI at minimum these days.

Dual DVI ports and a DP would also be an option. It's doable, you just have to have 3 outputs to manage it. The cards do support it.
 
I think the main reason VGA ports are still common on laptops, is that a lot of older projectors only have VGA inputs. And in the business world it's pretty common to need to hook up a laptop to one from time to time.
 
It sucks that no one really followed through with this to its logical conclusion. You can only do Eyefinity with the weakest gaming laptop, the Envy series, which have 5850m. You can't do it with any of the 5870m - or 5870m Crossfire, which is just bizarre.
