A scary Half Life coming...

Something about being Gordan Freeman makes half life not very scary.

The only game that was scary and remained scary for the duration of the campaign was FEAR for me. Most 'scary' games have their whoa! moment pretty early, then it all becomes routine as you progress through the campaign.

The original Half-Life scared me the first time I played it. Ravenholm in Half-Life 2 still creeps me out.

Then again, FEAR definitely scares me from beginning to end, and too scared to play Silent Hill in the dark. And, I'm odd enough to like horror movies for some reason.

The subject is Half life and yet everyone never stays on the "subject"

Nice contribution on the subject

Seriously though, there were some parts in the original that made me a bit on edge. HL2, none really. It felt a lot more like a run and gun game. Hopefully they'll get emotions more into play with EP3/HL3. There's so much potential for the next game (whenever it may come...)

P.S. Fear isnt THAT scary, cmon guys :p

I thought Half-life 2: Episode 1 probably was the scariest out of all the Half-life 2 series, but it was only scary because it was so dark. I would like to see the next Half-life be actually scary, just not stupid scary.

Yeah I though FEAR was pretty damn scary through-out.
My friends used to come over to toke and watch me play through movie style

Honestly... I think even Valve is so confused on where the story is going that they'll try and distract us with anything. I never thought of Half Life as a scary game... not even the "scary" parts were scary to me... it's not that type of game. Just starts answering some damn questions about the story already.

Make the vehicles destructible and use fuel. Now that's scary!

Or add some or the gunships to that final Ep 2 mission to protect the rocket. They could also do something taboo and make Freeman... get tired, after multiple hours of sprinting and fighting. Reduce accuracy and eventually all sprints.

I personally found Raveholm to be unsettling. It made very good use of sound effects and enemy mobs and kept me edgy through the level.

the developer was thinking carefully about how to scare the series' core fans: "The death of their children. The fading of their own abilities."

G-Man is Gordon's dad. Rip-off of Star Wars, which is a rip-off itself...

Gordon gets killed (who later turns out to be just incapacitated), you now control G-Man, which is basically Gordon sans crowbar. Again, sound like RotJ?

But didn't we already see this coming since the original HL? G-Man's always been the savior.

At least it might be cool running around bitch slapping shit with that briefcase,,.

G-Man with a portal gun might just be it over-the-top, though... (Perhaps that's what's in the briefcase, though?)

You're way too able in most FPS games for them to be scary if you're a good FPS gamer, FEAR was pretty damn scary because it the whole paranormal thing you can't fight with guns, so that kind of works.

But more reaslitic games like HL2 don't really scare because you're armed to the teeth with rockets and machinegun ammo, most enemies aren't hard to take down. If they want to scare you they have to put you against enemies that are either insanely tough which feels kinda lame pummeling the same creature 5000 times...or against some really agile enemy that can kill you in a few hits, which is often way too hard for casual players.

In fact games like the HL episodes clearly becoming geared towards casual gaming I'd say that sort of stuff is only going to get easier, I only found like 2 parts in the entire HL series hard both of which were universally hard and valve patched because everyone was getting owned.

Two things I got out from this short article: one good and one bad.

Good: finally something about future of HL, The news around Freeman and Co. has been very scarce lately

Bad: talking about what direction Valve wants to take the game in makes me think they're not very far in HL development.

HL2, +ep1 and 2 were more action flicks than scary.

Like others ahve said, if your flying around in a power suit with 1000 clips on you, not much is gonna freak you out.

A game like penumbra where from the start you know your just a man, and fighting some monster isnt even an option is a scary game.

in HL2, the fast zombies are as scary as FarCry's trigen, and that's the only thing that's scary in the game.

Not exactly the kind of scary I am looking for though, tbh, where we only fear it because it could end our game with a single hit. I prefer horror stuff like FEAR and Silent Hill

I hope Gabe is not talking about more 1 hit kill monster jumping out of the dark :(

I fixed that for you.

Thats pretty much how I felt. I don't think I ever truly felt scared in a game. I just felt vulnerable.

What the hell are you talking about?

only thing scary is how long it's taking for Episode 3/HL 3 to come out

Yeah, HL2 never got scary like the haunted house in Vampire: Masquerade Bloodlines (still get cold shivers through my body with that).

Ravenholm was scary in a different way. Kinda vulnerable like Chombo said. I guess jumpy. Those screamers can get the adrenaline going for sure. Can't forget the first time you see those tubby hutt masterminds inside the big skyscraper with psychic energy, that was wacked. Ep 2 I think.

Tolyngee, if G-man is your daddy, it would probably be an X-files spinoff more than anything. But I doubt Valve is going to make him your dad. Way too cliche. I get the sense that Valve has been going through various story possibilities, but have a hard time choosing. Hopefully by now they've settled on a story and are building levels and dialogue around it.

The first half life was kinda freaky at first when i played it a long time ago. Fear was also a top scary game, but thats prob due to playing it at 3am with buddies and surround sound wired on red bull. lol

Ravenholm only creeped me out b/c headcrabs remind me of spiders (especially the poison ones that look like spiders) and I hate spiders.

We had a black ant problem in our house in the summer of '05... when I decided to re-play HL2. That stupid mining level would screw me up because I'd go kill a ton of creepy crawling headcrabs, and then there'd be a black ant crawling across my hand. WTF?
