so after building my pc and getting everything installed i thought i was ready to go. then after a restart i get the "bootmgr is missing" error. so far all of the search suggestions i have come across have failed.

I am running a ssd for my os and 4 sata drives in raid10 with win 7.

things i have tried so far:

-ran windows boot disk for repair
-unplugged non os hdds
-changed boot options in bios
-disbaled raid on drives
-changed drive boot order

unfortunately i didnt complete all my installs so i didnt do an image/recovery yet.

any thoughts besides an os reinstall? any reasons why i would get this error so that i can prevent it next time.

Now if that wasn't bad enough, I can't even reinstall the OS and start from scratch.

I am now getting the "operating system missing" error when I attempt to boot from the CD-ROM Win 7 disk.

Anyone know why I can't boot from the OS disk which I just used to install the OS?

Another update.

I am now able to boot up windows. I went through the process of installing windows to a USB drive. After doing this, it recognized the bootmgr error and did a repair.

However, the only way to boot up the system is with the USB drive installed. Without this the device continues to say that the OS is missing.

So now I am in need of a way to startup windows without the USB. This seems to still be a bootmgr issue.

Unplug every storage device but the one you want Win 7 on, install to that device and give it a go.

For some reason MS fucked up Win 7's installation system pretty bad to the point where there are all kinds of stupid errors for stupid things. I was once getting a storage device error trying to install Win 7 all because I had an SD card in my card reader. When I took it out, no more problems.

QFT. I even posted about this not too long ago while doing a clean install of Windows 7 (using an Upgrade disk). Took me a while to determine that Windows 7 doesn't like it when you have more than one drive during installation.

That's common sense, not a fault of Windows 7. Windows has always had issues installing to a system with a card reader, especially if you, for some reason, left a card in the reader during the install. As far as I can remember, I've always unplugged card readers until after the install. It's been this way with Vista, XP, 2000, etc.

So, I was able to get the OS reinstalled. For some reason the Win 7 DVD wouldn't recognize (or the ODD), but I was able to load windows install to a USB and re-install that way.

Everything seems to be working fine now. I just need to figure out why I am getting the bootmgr error so that I can avoid the frustration next time.

You've got to be kidding me.
That's pretty much what I said too, when I read your post. XP and Vista would always assign drive letters to the USB card reader first, instead of my HDDs. Considering that most people will tell you to start an install with blank drives, you'll ALWAYS have issues with an SD card, because it is the only drive in the system with a file system at the time...which is why it would be common sense to remove it.

never had a problem with card reader.., never removed it even with xp/vista/win7 dont care about the drive letters...

or installing on pata and leaving my satas alone

and onto notebooks all works smoothly..

even installed off dvd, usb and all, even tried a 16GB sdhc card and it installed off it nicely...

i do know that if ahci is select as the sata mode it bitches.. i leave mine on ide mode, it works fine and copies at fast enough pace for me..

even had a raid10, 2 sata drives, 1 sata blue ray and 1 ided.. installed to ide no problems..

event too sata.. or the raid all fine and dandy...

try updating your bios..
