I was wondering if its possible to use an Auzentech Forte for gaming and a usb dac through optical for music playback. Or would that be too complicated? I doubt that it is, but I wanted to check. Thanks.

You can switch output devices really easily in the "Sound" control panel. As you can see I have two soundcards that I use for different devices.

Okay, so I should be all set. Now the question is, if I'm going to use a Forte for gaming, should I connect the dac (Musiland) via optical to my onboard sound or via optical to my Forte? Thanks again.

Won't matter. S/PDIF signal will be identical no matter the source. Since you have the soundcard though, you might as well use the optical out on that and just disable the onboard completely, in the BIOS if possible.

Okay, I'll try that. It seems kind of odd using a sound card that has a headphone amp and then using a dac with one also, but it shouldn't make a difference. Thanks.

EDIT: By the way, where can I get a decent optical cable that doesn't cost a fortune?

Monoprice ( when their site is back up ) or amazon would be a good start. cheap cheap cheap

Yup, cheap is your friend because a $0.98 toslink optical cable will work every bit as well as a $25 one. :D

Unless the materials are different. Plastic and Glass exhibit different characteristics (just like there are differences in how copper and silver conduct electricity). I'm not claiming you can hear the difference though, because I honestly don't know.

Also, does anyone know if a sound card with a headphone amp is supposed to make an audible 'click' noise when you get to windows? I thought it might have been the amp switching on, and it also makes the noise twice in quick succession when I uninstall and reinstall the driver. But I'm not so sure anymore. It's been doing this since I bought it a year ago. It's an HT Omega Claro Halo. I'm retiring it due to the clicking problem as well as that it blocks airflow from my video card and I'm going to get a low-profile card to replace it.

I would not want to sell it if there's something seriously wrong with it. HT Omega support didn't think there was based on what I was telling them, but who knows. Thanks for any help.

Ok, that's something I guess. I'd switch to the Forte in a heartbeat except I do listen to a lot of music, so that's why I wanted to use a Musiland Dac through optical. Thanks.

Just out of curiosity, how does a claro halo compare to an Auzentech Forte for games and music? Thanks.

Don't take my word on this but I believe the Claro Halo was intended more for music than gaming with swappable OPAMPS, etc....

But I will still choose the Forte due to the small size I need on the SFF setup.
