1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc

chiefly gaming, mostly TF 2, CS Source, Bioshock 2, Battlefield Bad Company 2 (holy shit this requires processing power)

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?

$1000 including shipping

3) Where do you live?

Ark-un-sahs

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. Please be very specific.

everything minus a DVD drive, might use my 150 GB Raptor that still works, but open to buying that nifty Samsung F3 500 GB drive

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.

Raptor 150 GB, DVD Drive

6) Will you be overclocking?

yes

7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?

1680x1050 but will be buying a 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 monitor shortly, don't factor that in the budget
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?

Hopefully within the next week

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.

Prefer to have USB 3.0 support

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? 32bit or 64bit

Let's assume I do.

I'll post pics when i'm done building it, promise!

OK, which processor do you want: Core i7? i5? Phenom II?

How about the video card?

Let's assume, for the moment, that you DON'T have an OS license on hand... will you have one by the time that you start the actual build?

And when, again, were you planning on buying the larger monitor?

There has been several $1000-or-less build threads within the past few weeks. Have you looked through any of them for ideas as to what you want?

funny, I priced that exact build myself earlier ROFL, I was just wondering if anyone could do any better

although I did add in the Hyper 212 and I chose the standard 5850 for $299 instead of the XFX black

hmm, great minds think alike.

I do have some extra room to spend more on a case

how about the HAF 932? My only problem is I don't like how friggin expensive it is PLUS shipping

talk about back breaking

i'm thinking more i5 since i7 would be out of my price range unless i went with a 5770.

Shortly means very shortly!

I will have an OS, i'm not worried about that.

Yes I did look through them, and more or less gwarren's build was what was posted in them.

adding in a Hyper 212 though to what he posted.

I'd go phenom II if not for the drop in frame rates over having the i5 750

Nice find, my young apprentice. for $52 more, that IS a good upgrade

Isn't the difference between the 750 and the 860 = hyperthreading?

... and the difference between the i7 860 and the X3440 is $40 in savings while sacrificing only 266Mhz.

I like it

Now i just need a suitable 1920x1200 monitor for preferably under $300, I know the one i linked is $400 on that site, but hmm, I really do want a 1920x1200 screen, it's the same as my laptop's resolution, and i like that resolution

i prefer 16:10 over 16:9

Well hmm, i may have changed my mind, right now i'm looking at a $604 build that includes the following

using combos and planning to unlock the 2 cores on the 550 chip, although I'm wondering if with all the money I'm saving I should just flat out just buy the quad core. Since all I plan on doing is gaming, I'm wondering if it's really wise to spend going the i5 route.

missing a CPU cooler, any suggestions?

also missing the spinpoint f3 but they are OOS, but it's not a big deal since i can use my 150 GB raptor just fine for now.

anything else I might be missing?

you guys think i oughta ditch the 550 and the unlocking thing and just go with a guaranteed quad?

Yes, I told you that already! Don't bother with this unlocking crap when you have the money to put down on a guaranteed quad. Hyper 212+ would be a fine cooler for what your going to use it for.

I know, I know, I'm trying to keep the cost of it down, I'm feeling miserly.

Plus I know there's one thing I have, there's an advantage to going the cheap route with the processor and mobo now, the fact that all I'd need to do if I want to upgrade to 1156 is just buy the processor and mobo, no biggie. The RAM can remain the same, which is good.

This is the same dilemma 4LC4PON3 went through, and he sold the motherboard/cpu 1 month after getting his computer together.

yeah there's always a downside :(

unfortunately if i go 1156, i'll have to go with a 5770 instead of a 5850

well

what would you guys do

Personally I would get the 1156 and wait on the VC until NV gets off thier ass and releases FERMI.

No, I have a Gateway 7811-FX, been using it for over a year now.

I had a 8800GTS but it crapped out

No warranty on the 8800GTS? what brand?

For gaming, if you really want to save the cash, go for the ph2 550 and unlock. Your best chance of unlocking is now, because its already late in the manufacturing process, so yields are really good. I'd like to head down to MC and pick one up since i'm bored and feel like playing with some new toys, lol. The only thing stopping me is the high price of DDR3. :( :(
