Please help.

I'm able to run either of these on my system. I can get them for about the same price.

I will use the monitor mostly for office productivity - viewing serveral application windows at once while I work.

I also will occasionally watch blurays from the bluray drive in my computer.

No gaming.

Don't need connectivity.

Don't need scaler.

Is the color quality and overal visual effect of the 2711 significantly superior to the 3007?

Is text reading appreciably different between the two?

Is the 3007 too ostentatious for an office where cients will visit?

Since they are both large and IPS, I would choose the one with the best black level, contrast ratio, and screen uniformity which is the U2711. It's really a no brainer unless for some reason you think a 27inch is too small (it's not).

Oh yea, there's lots of complaints on the "grainy" coating of the 30". Not sure about the 27" coating but it's probably better.

Thanks very much.

Inerestingly, the Dell rep's personal opinion was that there was a virtually indistinguishable difference in image quality between the two displays. But I think he was just going from the specs and hadn't actually seen the 2711.

umm...do you read text on white backgrounds much? if so i would avoid the 3007.

Read text is mostly what I'll be doing. If the 2711 is better at that, then that's all she wrote, so to speak.

What was your experience reading text on the 3007?

Thanks.

i had a 3007wfp-hc for about a month and it was amazing for watching movies and pretty much anything without white backgrounds....the antiglare coating gives a sort of shimmering/crystal effect that sort of makes you think your eyes are losing focus or something. just really annoying to read on the white background in my experience. good luck!

And the U2711 doesn't have antiglare couting? Have you compared them? If not that claim is rather unhelpful...

And yes, compared to a 30" the 27" is rather small (depending on your frame of reference).

The 27" 16:9 is 20% larger than a 24" 16:10
A 30" 16:10 is 30" larger than a 27" 16:9 ...

Don't let the aspect ratio fool you.

The 2711 will probably have better quality, but the reason for that is because of it's relatively small size.

I'd go with the 30" due to it being 16:10 and easier to match multi-monitor setups.

The U2711 has probably the best IPS panel released for the general public so far (besides the 24" HP dreamcolor for $2k). The extra 3 inches for the 30" just aren't worth the reduction in contrast ratio, black level, and screen uniformity.

No gaming? Go for the 3007 then....

? You get the 3007 because you game. It has low input lag.

And to answer OP, get the 2711 since it has more connectivity. Yes you said you don't need it, but you will kick yourself one day. I am sad I cannot connect my PS2 to my 3007 via component.

Extra three inches?
Are you trolling me? :p

Not only is measuring the diagonal a very unintuitive way of measuring the size of a monitor but since the two monitors in question doesn't even have the same aspect ratio the relevance goes right out the window.

I even posted a link that I thought would make the difference clearer.

I love my 30 inch monitor. But the dot pitch of 0.25 was smaller than anything I'd really used before. This made text smaller and reading web pages more difficult. I tried increasing Windows DPI, but that always looks uglier than hell, so that went back to standard. Eventually I got used to this small DPI though.

What worries me about the U2711 is it doesn't look that much bigger than a 24 inch monitor and has an incredibly small 0.23 dot pitch. Text reading seems like it would be even more difficult on the eyes. Though I imagine many of the younger folks probably could adjust quickly I suppose.

Not sure if anyone has their 2711 in, but you should definitely ask about the AG coating from a current 2711 owner if that's a concern, since the 2410 (the last IPS panel they released before the 2711) has a pretty strong / visible AG coating.

if you use firefox, then I recommend this addon...

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6489

will let you increase your font size on all pages but leave images at their original size and stuffs!

I totally didn't realize the 30 and 27 don't have the same dot-pitch. Thats very disappointing, as I was dreaming of putting a 27" above (vertically) a 30" and having them align in width. It truly thought that the 27" wasn't just a cut down 30" panel.

Thanks very much to everyone who replied. It was very helpful.

I decided to look at the 3007 for 21 days to see what the image quality was like. I have it now. I can really notice the AG coat, but I think I'm getting used to it. What's more, everyone who has compared the 3008 with 2711 side by side has said they don't notice a difference in the AG coat. Finally, it seems that any IPS panel out there has AG coating, so it's not like I could opt for an IPS display without it.

What I really like about the 3007 is the size and the resolution. I use every inch of it. In order to give up the screen size to go to the 2711, it would have to more than just a little bit better. It would have to be basically no comparison.

Thanks again.
