W7: Auto-hide causes hanging after idle?

With auto-hide enabled for the task bar I've noticed that my PC may hang for up to two minutes after my monitor kicks back on. Disabling it seems to work... so far. If it does occur again then I have no idea.

I tried disabling it after searching and seeing this suggestion on google, so this doesn't seem to be just my issue. My Vostro 1500 laptop does it as well. I've also used W7 on two different motherboards and GPUs.
 
Does nobody else have this problem or does nobody use auto-hide? :p
 
I use auto-hide & I do not have the problem ... no ideas either.:confused:
 
That's weird... I've had this problem since I switched to W7 too but I always thought it was just me.
Usually happens when I leave it idle for an hour+.
So do you just let it sit when it happens to you? I always end up hitting ctrl+alt+del and bringing up task manager because although it takes a few minutes to respond, control comes back at that point.

Edit:
I forgot to add, it seems to happen less often if I leave a window open before I leave the computer.
This really sucks, I always liked auto-hide.:(

What happens if you guys turned off Aero mode and let the task bar autohide?

This smells of video card not caring much for kicking in it's GPU power when the task bar appears for some reason such as heat or low/high power mode switching.
 
But even without a video card to help, would it really take my E6550 or for that matter the OP's i7 minutes to become responsive? :confused:
Anyway, I'll have to try turning off Aero tomorrow morning to see if you're right.
I hope you are, got a shiny 4870 ready to pop in if its my stupid 7900. :D

It's not the video card unless it's some power feature enabled across all video cards. I've tried a GTX 285 and a Radeon 5870. I'll try turning Aero off too. I just let it sit when it hangs, I push the windows key so I know it's "done" when it pops up.
 
Turning Aero off seems to work, but I've only been able to use my laptop so far.

Are RoboticPotPie and I the only people here who experience this? This is such a weird problem because it does not happen with sleeping, only idling with the monitor off. (it idles fine if the monitor stays on or if I turn it off myself)

i have exactly the same problem too.
(and a quick google search reveals a lot of other people as well)

it seems some people had succes with turning off the "autohide the taskbar" function and others with turning off the monitor standby mode.
Both features i don't want to miss (especially on a 80 Euro OS)
 
The new Catalyst 10.1 drivers seem to have a workaround. It doesn't shut off the monitor but rather it just shuts off the image but keeps the back lighting "on" so the monitor thinks it's still on. Haven't had the problem since but it'd be nice for the monitor to completely go into standby mode.
 
I just got a new laptop (ASUS N61JQ) and it happens on this machine too. It also happened on my older Dell Vostro 1500. This is certainly a Windows issue. I'm surprised not too many people are reporting this.
 
Weird, I use auto-hide and don't have this problem. I rarely shut off the PC, so it idles over-night, etc., some times I manually turn off the monitor, other times the monitor goes into stand-by but I've never seen this issue.

hmm, can't imagine why. It's an nice feature IMO.
when you google the problem you get a lot of people reporting this issue.
Unfortunately there is still no fix available :(
 
Yeah, I'm sure there are a lot of people numbers wise that use it, but I bet they make up less than 5% of the user base, and maybe even less than 1%. We need a poll.
